No, FOSS has plenty of ability to consume and emit documents using OOXML.

Totally agree with you here coredog, OOXML is a step forward and SharePoint works best with Office 2007.
But how does is it that it "ties businesses to SharePoint"?

OOXML opens a whole lot more doors for FOSS than the binary formats ever did, damn it's a document format that I can pick up a book and read decent documentation that describes how that format is set out, so why are so may people keen to bag it?

Wow! "about the only person running Linux in the whole country"?

    Really??
What about all those people hugging their MacBooks? Let's not forget that OSX is just a *nix variant here.... (albeit a prudy one)
What about the old 486 that was running RedHat and acting as my firewall/router/proxy server in my old flat?
I personally know a lot of people that use *nix for various activities in everyday situations.

"Microsoft tried binaryizing the web with ActiveX"?
So you never use flash based web-sites? Is M$ responsible for Flash now too??
Or enjoy the richer interfaces that can be achieved with Flash (or Silverlight)?
I think that making things work for the user is good practice, I wonder what the costs involved in user support for OO were compared to M$ Office?
IMO this switch is because the AA perceive that M$ Office has a lower TCO than OO.
As to the validity of that perception it's debatable, but when you have to train users to make sure that they send .doc and not ODF files to external parties there are three costs there, firstly the training, secondly the burnt time to get the right file out and finally the hard to measure contempt for the numpty cost.

  4. Bait and switch. on How Would You Interview Potential Managers? · · Score: 1

I've seen a couple of guys who were looking good but I had the sneaking suspicision that they were 'reading' the question and giving the answers that they thought we wanted rather than honest ones.

So I asked a couple of leading questions about their manner of dealing with increasing workloads to meet deadlines.

I phrased the first suggesting that working the team stupidly hard might be in the company culture and the second suggesting that managing client expectations would be prefered. The sychophant took the bait and answered the way it looked like we wanted the questions answered from the phrasing, hence he was not hired. To be fair we had made it very clear that working extended periods of overtime was not going to be part of the job at the very start of the interview.

    • Memorable Characters - How can you not like Minsc or loathe Edwin
    • Non-Linear
    • Scope to play good and evil (but it still makes sense when you do take the evil path)
    • MASSIVE! - There are literally hundreds of game hours in there.
Baldur's Gate definitely deserves a mention.

  15. Re:he just had to have revenge on Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith · · Score: 1
In the 2-on-1 lightsabre duel from Epsiode I there is a moment where the fighting has ceased. Gui-Con and Darth Maul are separated by a plasma wall and Obi-won is even further away. Maul walks around like a caged tiger while Gui-Con just sits there meditating. This is not exciting! This does not build suspense! This does not move the story foward! I couldn't believe that they would just sit there like that. That was the perfect opportunity for a short conversation between warriors to take place and give the audience insight into the conflict! Doesn't Maul have anything to say? Doesn't he even want to mock the jedi? Is Gui-Con so dead to the world that he's not even remotely curious why this guy has appeared out of nowhere to kill him?

You hit yourself over ther head with the point and still missed it...

Maul is quite literally a caged tiger, he is the assasin of Sidious, a pet to be loosed on the Jedi as required, all he can do is follow the instructions of his master, this does not require him to converse with the Jedi.
Qui-Gon-Jin knows that this is a sith warrior (who else could it be...) and that the only course of action left to him at this point is to battle him to the enivitable outcome. To this end he takes a moment to still himself, clear out those thoughts which may cloud his mind such as anger or agression in preparation for the comming encounter

The point is not to build suspense, it's not needed now, everyone knows that there is going to be an allmighty rumble, but to illustrate how different the jedi and the sith are. The jedi calm and at peace with what will be. The sith powerhungry, eager for violence and death
