  1. Sales AND USE Tax on Wisconsin Governor Proposing Tax On Downloads · · Score: 1

Sales taxes I believe are actually called sales and use taxes. So if you live in Maryland, buy a car in Delaware because they don't have sales taxes, you are supposed to pay taxes on that car in Maryland because that is where it will be used. I must admit I don't truly understand the whole thing, but there are a whole variety of rules. For instance, I don't think you have to pay taxes in your home state if you paid more taxes in the state you bought it in. However, if you paid less taxes in the state you bought it in than you would have paid in your home state, I think you are supposed to make up the difference to your home state. I never realized how complicated the whole matter was until a coworker and I got into a discussion about Sales and Use taxes a couple of years ago.

So wonder how long it will be before instead of getting an Intel processor with two general purpose CPUs on one die, we will be able to get a CPU and a PPU on one die or a CPU and a GPU on one die. Maybe we will eventually have the choice of having all 3 cores integrated into a single die. I suppose this would provide greater bandwidth between the various processors and would allow us to use one bank of easily upgradeable memory. The reason I add the memory thing is because I am not aware if there are video cards out there where it is convenient to add memory capacity, I know my cheap card doesn't have an easy way to add memory. I suppose I could solder on some chips to the open pads, but I'm not sure if the GPU would automatically recognize the memory or not.

  6. HD over FireWire on TiVo vs Microsoft vs HDTV Cable · · Score: 1

As another responder has said, you can record HD content via a FireWire connection to a cable box. I have a Motorola DCT-6200 with a FireWire port which pipes the broadcast HD channels (ABC/CBS/NBC/Fox) out of the FireWire port unencrypted. And from my understanding, the cable company is not allowed to encrypt those channels. The other HD channels that my cable company provides (HBO/Cinemax/Showtime/ESPN) as well as all of the digital stations are encrypted and cannot be recorded via the FireWire port. The analog stations (2-99) are also MPEG encoded by the cable box and sent out of the FireWire port unencrypted.

What took me 30+ hours to get kind of working under Linux, I had working in 1 hour under Windows. For most of the tasks most people want to do, Microsoft has produced a good operating system. Most people don't have the time or knowledge to edit *.conf files, compile source code, etc..., they just want something that works. I'm sure at this time you want to go into a tirade about how windows doesn't work because of how many viruses Windows gets and so on. However, if another OS had the market share that Windows had, people would be writing viruses for those OSs too.

You do realize that the government doesn't have their own money right? Ultimately, in the end, we are going to have to pay whatever it costs to provide the service in taxes. So if it costs X to provide the service and they charge Y to users, the other X - Y is just going to be made up in taxes. So people who don't even know what WiFi is will be subsidizing our browsing (not to say we don't subsidize things all the time that we don't use). The real question is can the government really provide this service cheaper than private business and how do we determine exactly how much the goverment is spending to provide the service. That is the problem with private businesses trying to compete against the goverment.

I have been playing around with Myth TV and the problem I have is not only getting a quality picture out, but also a quality picture in. Right now I have my digital cable box connected to my PVR-250 with an S-Video cable, I would imagine if you wanted to spend the money, there are capture cards that could take take the component video out of the cable box. What would be ideal, which the article mentions, is capturing from the firewire port on a cable box, however, after talking to the cable company and to motorola, it sounds like you have to depend on the cable company to turn on that feature, and the people at my cable company don't even know they can do such a thing. Now to get the picture out, my computer video card has an s-video output (as does the 350 I believe), which again is not as good as component video. But, again, if you want to spend the money, I think they sell video cards that have component video outputs or I believe they make converters that will take the VGA output and convert that to component video.

Its just a personal preference. Recently, I also paid more for my cable then I had to and stuck with the smaller cable company over the larger Comcast. Was this because I am a fool... No it is because the competition is what makes the cable prices so low in my area and if everyone went with Comcast there would be no competition. I do not believe satellites are sufficient competition because a lot of people also desire to have a broadband connection with their cable. Sometimes people knowingly pay higher prices for a reason.

I'm not too knowledgeable about this stuff yet either, but I will try to help. Seeing as you are modded to 0 for some reason, I don't think many of the more knowledgeable will see the question. First off, most (all?) DVDs are not High Definition. A DVD doesn't not hold enough data for an entire HD movie. I think when they come out with these new DVD types like Blue Ray and I think there is another standard, they might have the storage capacity to put an HD movie onto a DVD. Second off, I would imagine that as long as the tuner card is recognized by the OS and software you are using, you should be able to tune and record regular programming. The PVR-350 does assist in recording because it has a hardware based MPEG encoder which takes the burden away from the CPU allowing one to use a less powerful computer. I didn't RTFA so I'm not sure if this has a hardware encoder (hardware to make the MPEG files).
