  3. Nook Tablet really an update on B&N Nook Tablet vs. Amazon Kindle Fire · · Score: 1

The nook Tablet was probably meant as a feature bump/update to the nook Color. They also probably had a higher end tablet. But that one's BOM cost was too high and would be killed by the Kindle Fire. So they probably pulled the planned higher end one, and rebranded the nook Color 'update' as the Tablet. Just a guess.

I believe the Intel's focus for WindRiver is their software tools. Note that WindRiver already markets BSP kits for Linux for OEMs. It includes debuggers, emulators, and build systems. With WindRiver's tools and Intel's hardware they can have a very compelling Moblin Linux solution for potential hardware vendors. Sean

  5. Irony of Apple's one size fits all mentality on FCC Probing Apple, AT&T Rejection of Google Voice · · Score: 1

Because Apple has only one version of software for all markets, regardless of carrier, they may appear to be independent. Yet, this sword cuts both ways. If a big enough customer, e.g., AT&T, says jump, Apple is left with no choice but to make the whole world jump. Apple is responding to one market's requirements by changing software for everyone regardless of the relevance to other parts of the world. Sean

The real story is the Nokia / Intel announcement of cooperation on Atom/mobile products. Intel seems rather focused on Mobilin for MID with a long term strategy for handsets. While Nokia will be pushing their Ovi stores/maps/content with a new UI for Symbian. I doubt that Nokia ever looked on Maemo for more than an R&D effort. Commercially it was never a success nor a viable consumer product - a geek toy yes, a popular consumer product never. Maemo is irrelevant. The real thing to watch is the Intel/Nokia relationship on handsets - see how that evolves from processor choice to OS. Sean

  7. A drop in a bucket ( a very empty bucket at that ) on Olin College — Re-Engineering Engineering · · Score: 4, Interesting

Engineering based firms that hire Computer Science and Computer Engineering undergraduates are struggling to meet their recruitment goals today. Although coming up with new ways to shape the skills and experiences of engineering undergraduates is noble and necessary. It hardly helps with the overall lack of new students majoring in those subjects at university in the first place. This program is an interesting experiment at an elite school. But it hardly has any impact on the lack of students choosing this field.

The other problem I have with it is that the ideas espoused are not terribly new. At the University of Nebraska's School of Engineering students can enter the JD Edwards Honors program with an emphasis in Business.

    http://jdedwards.unl.edu/

I tend to not hire CompSci or CompE students from this program because as entry level hires they have incredibly unrealistic expectations about their first job. They all want to transition to management right away before cutting their teeth on engineering design. So we tend to skip them over when we get resumes.

  17. DragonFlyBSD on FreeBSD 5.3 Release Candidate Released · · Score: 4, Informative
If you have concerns about the path being taken for FreeBSD 5.x, I highly recommend you take a look at DragonFlyBSD.

    DragonFlyBSD

DragonFly is an operating system and environment designed to be the logical continuation of the FreeBSD-4.x OS series. These operating systems belong in the same class as Linux in that they are based on UNIX ideals and APIs. DragonFly is a fork in the path, so to speak, giving the BSD base an opportunity to grow in an entirely new direction from the one taken in the FreeBSD-5 series.
