I'm kinda scratching my head on that one... interesting enough, 'c' and 'v' are next to each other on the keyboard. I doubt an e-mail program would automagically change the e-mail address. It's possible the editor who put up the exchange edited the material to make it presentable... just a thought.
Atari ST, Amiga, and even C64 had some games that all had 3-D rendered environments... before 1989... All someone needs to do is dig up these games (I can't remember their names) and show the prior art. I think these lawyers will eventually lose their stupid patent infringement bullshit crap and they'll get beat up on by some other large nasty lawyers who are good at beating up stupid lawyers.
What's so difficult about a read-only format? How difficult are PDFs to use in read-only mode? Isn't the document still useful if you can read it and obtain knowledge from it?
Secondly, come on people, why do we allow such editorializing in the main description of the stories? What ever happened to objective story summaries? Save the rehtoric for the story comments. It's just noise.
my subject line speaks for itself. I wonder if more game designers would be more accountable to their loyal fans in order to keep them? This sort of choice in apologizing for the missing features really only makes me like the guy more!
OMG try saying "Michael invented and patented the world's first and only concept for non-contact UV photon induced electric field poling of ferroelectric non-linear photonic bandgap crystals" 5 times fast!!!!!!!!!!!!
Looks cool though.... I've always wanted to backup my 60 GB hard drive in around a minute;)
It's too bad you're boohooing something you haven't seen yet.
Historically, the Batman movies have gone from great to shit...
The first "Batman" movie was excellent. Keaton pulled off Batman and Bruce Wayne believably, although Jack Nicholson stole the show (when does he not steal the show?). The second movie was meh... ok... and "Batman Forever" was stupidly named, Val Kilmer was a poor choice, and Jim Carey made the riddler look like a freakshow, not a twisted plotting villian. We can all thank Joel Schumacher and his egotisitcal directing style (and someone who has never obviously read good comic books) for the POS movie "Batman & Robin". It was a hunk of crap. Wtg Joel... you are a master of shit, and that movie proved it. I am ashamed that in my need to collect DVDs of comic book movies that I must buy your hunk of garbage... Fuck you Joel.
On a lighter note, this trailer for "Batman Begins" looks dark like it should. Christain Bale is fantastic actor (if you haven't, rent American Psycho... sinister movie and brilliant) and he'll pull off the conflicted nature of Batman well.
Remember, don't judge a movie before you watch it... you might just miss a good flick! I for one will wait until it comes out in theatres and judge it for myself.
My wife had our child 2 months ago, and it forced us to be more aware of the sleep we need to get to be available for our son. Screaming babies at 3 am require someone to at least be alseep for 3-4 hours at a time...
Have a child... it will require you to be more responsible to be rested.
I read/. in the parent's courtesy lounge when my son was in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at my local hospital. He was sleeping at the time and I had to get my fix o'/.
I work with a Russian fellow who is new to Canada just a few years (he worked in the Soviet Military 25 years... talk about grumpy and political). He went through each person in the group and would basically be a nasty bastard to everyone. Then he would stick the knife in your back if you weren't around. A bunch of us finally got fed up with him, and we confronted his bad behaviour, one at a time, over the span of 3-4 months. I got my opportunity to tell him that he was way out of line with his attitude and that I wouldn't tollerate his immaturity. Surprisingly, it worked, he appologized, and now we get along better. He's still a stubborn bastard who tries to play up to the main boss and point fingers and avoid responsibility when he can, but he doesn't ever rage in fits anymore. Other people did the same with him, and he learned quickly.
The trick is to know what your tollerance level is, pick your battles, and be honest about how you expect to be treated. If someone is out of line and blatantly rude, do the unthinkable and call them on it. Say something like "I'm sorry to have to ask this, but did I somehow offend you in some way?" This makes them have to face their behaviour and try to justify it. Most assholes will backdown quickly.
because I think they are a ripoff until there is some consolidation. Even though I don't own an XBox, I think XBox Live has it right... pay the monthly price to get access to dedicated servers. Tier this model, and you could add MMORPGs to this as well.
If I make 40% less living in Canada, then I should be moving to the US... Anyone wanna hire an experienced Web Software developer? I could certainly use the extra 40%!
CPU (Computer Power User) - on occasion when I feel like I'm out of the loop. GMR - To keep up with what new video games are coming out, and how recent games have been reviewed. 2600 - To satisfy my "oh that's so cool" craving.
This will only manage to delay decent games, cancel mediocre games, and developers who are just trying to ear a decent living will get their asses handed to them because the game designers haven't a freaking clue how to put together solid content... oh yah and it will be all management's fault.
With all the gadgets the infrantry will have, all an enemy has to do is knock them out with EMP and everyone's goodies will get knocked out or frazzled... goodbye mesh network, goodby VoIP headsets, goodbye translator PDAs etc. Better look into EMP-proofing technologies in addition to the GAP-inspired pocket-for-everything-under-the-sun fatigues.
However, we as individuals should not be forced to act a certain way just so you can feel good about how you raised your children.
So to illustrate your extreme viewpoint, we should just acknowledge that laws against murder go against the way a person should behave, therefore we should just throw those laws away. Of course this is not what you meant... however what I would suggest is that we do need to create societal rules to govern our behaviours. Video games are a medium... we have allowed violence to become part of the medium's culture because it sells games. Don't get rid of the GTAs and the Dooms and the Postals because there is a mature market that understands the merits of this games. Do consider that the video game market should mature in such a way that it accomodates more of aspects of human behaviour, not just one of violence.
"If you don't want society to impact your children, then leave society,"
Leave society? Kind of a drastic measure don't you think? We are ALL raised within our social groups, and to leave the groups we grew up with is deny what makes us social creatures in the first place. Let's at least acknowledge that we as people have the right to influence society for the better of our children. Wouldn't you agree that women's lib or anti-segregation was a good thing? Society impacted all the children growing up from these movements, and now we all agree we have a better world. Instead of forsaking society to protect your children, let's influence society to make it a better place for our children to grow up in! Create more choices in videogames, don't take choices away!
Overall, I pretty much agree with what you said. No one has the perfect child-rearing plan for our society. There are too many variables. And who wants a mindless child-lamb who grew up strictly on Barney and Kraft Dinner...
It's amazing how people think that just because someone has a position that is "encourage people to consider additional ways to tell stories that are good for kids" that it means that people are advocating changing exisitng games to make them less violent. Come on, let's actually read what people write here, and not just jump to conclusions. I'm not advocating us changing what the industry produces now, I'm advocating looking underneath that penny and realizing there's another market.
Let's keep the GTAs, the Dooms and the Postals... at the same time, game publishers may consider new opportunities for parents and children to enjoy in videogame storytelling. Everyone wins!
Kapish?
Refined carbohydrates are the fastest source of energy food that people eat. White breads, cereals, potato chips, rice cakes, popcorn, cakes, pastas, and soft drinks, all which contain starches and sugars, give your body energy to burn. As a geek battling the buldge, I am hopelessly addicted to these foods. Once I went on a REDUCED carbohydrate diet, I lost around 45 pounds in the first three months. I was over 330 pounds, and now I have settled into a 295 range after going off the diet last November. My diet has changed, and I eat less. Less of everything. Less carb-laden food, and less junk. I try to eat healthy, and it seems to be working. Exercise is my next goal to start. I am traditionally lazy, so the DDR pad and game I have for my PS2 will be getting some good use soon. 45 minutes is a great experience. Oh yah, drink 2 litres of water (half a gallon) of water every day... it helps flush out all the crap you still have in your system.
Although you are making a good point about the fact that we keep getting these articles every other day, the fact remains that this editorial position really speaks about something important. As an avid gamer and new parent, I believe it's important for parents to be involved with their children's educational/recreational activities. I do see a glimmer of a new line of thinking that I don't believe has been explored yet: Video games are now a medium unto themselves, and as a medium, there is room to grow.
For example, I think of TV as a great example of a medium that can help encourage the viewer to see and learn things on a regular basis. Sesame Street teachs often about the virtues of sharing and being kind to others. Maybe there's room for videogames to do something similar for children.
I really see an easy trend in the general population to condemn and judge things without actually looking at the layers. People are quick to judge (people think it's their right to judge everything), and videogames are easy prey to judge because they typically contain content that society deems less appropriate for society.
Instead of judging and criticizing the videogame industry, I think critics should encourage game developers to expand the capabilities of the medium. Introducing storylines suitable for children where acceptable society values and virtues are explored is a good thing for kids - don't brainwash the kids into mindless sheep. Stories like Rayman work really well for kids. They ecourage children to act for the good of others. They model the approach we usually feed to our kids when they grow up: be good to your neighbours, help people when they are in trouble, etc.
Maybe there might be a way of encouraging sharing or other sorts of "mushy" values without making everyone sick of the Barney epidemic...
I've been using Grocery Gateway for 2.5 years now since I moved to the Greater Toronto Area, and it has made a huge difference in the amount of available time we have as a family. My wife is expecting our first child any day now, and to know that she won't be faced with the extra hassles of shopping for groceries with a newborn really makes me feel good. I love the quality of the products, and the prices are reasonable. We don't have to tip the driver, they are always on time. Special note to the geeks is that it is truly a great e-commerce site, and the user interface is excellent. I can find anything there, including booze! I am such a fanboy...
Get two bent rods, a psycic, and start dowsing... crap it would probably work better than using old shitty maps.

When asked to comment on this story, President Bush was quoted say "nucular" yet again.

A valid tactic... it mitigates the problems with a unified vendor, but it costs lots more...
