If 3 cups a day == 60% reduction, then my 6 cups a day must mean 120% reduction! Not only will I not forget things, I'll remember things I never learned in the first place!
"Incidentally, I know that 20,000 feet is about half an atmosphere, so I guess they're talking about 2/3 (sea-level) atmosphere at 12,000 feet."
More than that. It works exponentially. I'm too lazy to work out the math, the difference between 0 and 12,000 feet is much more than the difference between 12,000 and 24,000
If I were to ever come across an ad-sponsored desktop, I'd hack that bit of code out of it, recompile, and re-install.
I despise ads. As it stands right now, my host file is about 2 or 3 megs long. Ads have propagated every facet of our existance at this point. I'd like to keep them out of the privacy of my own home.
Swatch tried this with their silly little "internet beats" idea. It never took off because the time system is so ingraned in peoples mind that changing it would be next to impossible.
I still my old IBM Model "M" keyboard. I love it... I've done everything to this board (including dropping it from a 4th story window, spilling countless liquids into it, dragging it across the road behind the car, etc.) and it still functions just as well as before. As an added advantage, the keys have caps that you can pry off, so when I made the switch to dvorak, I was able to keep the same keyboard, and not have a bunch of stickers all over the place. You can still buy them off ebay, I've seen them for sale (though, why anyone would want to get rid of one of these things is beyond me)
Our good friend Mr. Hawking seems to have his facts wrong. Not all computer virii are destructive. In fact, MOST viruses are benign.
The ones that you hear about are the destructive ones.
Virii are life, and like any simple life-form, there are variations. Some are destructive, some are not.
Even if they required validation to connect, you're talking about a conglomerate of probably the richest corporations in the world. They can own OC-128 lines, the p2p servers can't.
A month long packetstorm is enough to bring down these neworks. Even GnutNet can't handle that kind of bandwith being thrown around on it's (poor little cable-user) ultra-super-whateverthehelltheywanttocallthem-peer servers
Like, is being drunk at work (Alcoholism: $1533 billion/year) while smoking pot (Drugs: $800 billion/year) concidered goofing off (Slashdot: $688/year) ?
Right now they have the ability to track your location via your cellphone, even if it's not in use.
What worries me about this is that you can't just leave it at home, it's with you forever. If someone devious with a lot of power wanted to track you, you'd have no way to prevent it.
Yes, but the road to hell is paved with good intentions. You can pass all sorts of laws for the protection of the people that gives extra powers, but what then when the "bad guys" are the ones who control all this anti-citizen technology?
This isn't "commie red china" because it can't be. The laws are not (yet) in place to let it be.
They haven't switched over because they were trading "being pre-installed on windows machines" for "using IE". There was a story a while back about AOL using moz for their latest version (aol 6 or 7 or something) because that contract is over
Canadian laws prohibit adding caffiene to any fruit flavoured drink
Untrue. It USED to be illegal to add caffeine to things unless it was a natural part of the manufacturing process. They have since repealed that law. Now it's a PR thing. Canadian types have come to think of mountain dew as a caffeine free alternative drink (like sprite or 7-up)
And in other news, uncoveror has permanently left slashdot of his own accord.
That is all. Carry on.
Are you kidding?
It will be glorious when the Tanks roll across the border and the conquest is complete

The solution is to institute draconian laws, then use earth as a penal colony...
That should get all the buerocrats off the planet for a while, leaving us to just do whatever we want
Swatch tried this with their silly little "internet beats" idea. It never took off because the time system is so ingraned in peoples mind that changing it would be next to impossible.
No.
People don't like to change something like that for the most part, so dvorak is left to us crazy geek types who have too much time.

Not to mention the cache. Not only is google linking to the source, but they are freely giving away the source.
Yes. The results have to be published. The in-progress research does not.
I think that's kind of the purpose of that comment
Is that like... $200,000USD? I'm in Canada! I could be a billionaire!!!!

No, no. You see... they let the (one) Canadian team play. That means it's open to the world.
that's what canada has, iirc.

By appealing to a smaller group of people (us nerdy types), he's... well... appealing to a SMALLER GROUP OF PEOPLE!!!!
less people who want your cd == less people to buy your cd
I *JUST* bought an old thinkpad 760dx (used of course). Now how am I supposed to get the soundcard working?

Anyone serious about running java is just going to install the Sun VM anyways. $Deity knows I do.

Yeah...
I mean jeez... just write an IRC client for your 802.11b-equipped handheld like normal people
