ATM may not have ever reached the desktop but it is a very good backbone protocol. It was designed from the start for fast switching and has QOS features built into the protocol. Things like Gbit eithernet and 10gbit ethernet are available but ethernet was never designed as a WAN protocol and lacks features that ATM has.

I would say over half of the tier1 ISP's are running ATM on their backbones. That would make ATM a very succesful technology in the Internet.

I use XML-RPC to bridge programs like getting a C and Java program to communicate across the network and even on the localhost and soon i'll be using it with C# and Java then Java and a Cobol legacy app( i hope anyway.. does Cobol even have TCP socket support?).

As bandwidth increases maybe routing algorithms could take physical distance into account when picking an ideal route. Two links have the same bandwidth and utilization? well pick the one that is physically closer. Another thing to consider is physical infratructure layouts. I bet that there is a 10Mbit/sec connection out there that actually has better throughput then a 100Mbit/sec connection to the same destination based soley on a shorter/better physical path.
