  1. EnGarde is a good step forward on EnGarde Secure Linux v2 Out · · Score: 1
It's good to see a distro that focuses on security. I've used version 1.0, and it did a decent job "out of the box". It'll be interesting to try out this latest version since some of the new features look very appealing.

Is there anyone out there that uses EnGarde in their production environment?

We can offer you what it is you are looking for (for well under $500). This would include 24/7 support, a dedicated server, multi-homed bandwidth, and much more. Please email us if interested here.

    Thanks.

  3. Operation: Flashpoint on What Games Have Actually Affected You? · · Score: 1

I would have to say Operation: Flashpoint. It is (to this day) one of the only FPS out there that adequately brings the realities of large scale combat to life. Sure, it is no Sim by any means (in terms of vehicle control, etc), but the overall experience is excellent. It is NOT intended for Quake/UT players specifically, and maybe not even the majority of the CS crowd care for it. But it sets a standard, and does it well. I can't wait to see the next generation sequel to this game.

That's true, thanks for bringing it up. That is the reason I still have it... it's in one of my Linux boxes at home and works like a champ. I've personally used it on several different distros without a hitch, but a friend of mine said he had issues with the G400 on some distros he tried. Have you heard of any similar occurences?

  13. Matrox isn't for everyone... on Matrox Parhelia Benchmarks and Review · · Score: 1
Matrox has (and probably always will be) considered a great graphics card in terms of features and quality, but not performance. Sure, it's FSAA looks sweet in screenshots and Matrox demos, but it's been my experience that has made me see it as a below average gaming card, at best. Now, just because it may not deliver a higher framerate than Nvidia's killer boards doesn't mean it has nothing to offer. I remember my old G400 Dual Head... first decent card capable of dual-monitor display. Drivers were solid too.

I honestly hope that this new board may stand up a bit more to the Nvidia Giant in terms of performance, but realistically I don't think that'll happen.

  21. Corporate culture question... on What's It Like to be Google's Boss Techie? · · Score: 1

    Hello Mr. Silverstein,

First off, I have always been a huge fan and user of Google. I come from a SysAdmin background, and as part of a team at one of my old employers, our job was to maintain the 99.9% uptime of a large Linux clustered environment (1200+ servers). These machines were spanned across multiple datacenters in various geographic locations in an effort to increase efficiency, performance, and redundancy. Using network monitoring applications, we had the ability to receive pager notifications whenever an issue occurred (which at times would be often and at awkward times... when it rains, it pours!).

Considering that this is a very high level description, how do Google's methods differ? Also, could you please briefly explain the motives behind the recent inception of the Google Search Appliance? I think it is an incredible system (it took my old employer a long time, a lot of effort, and tons of man hours to create a decent search capability into its custom built intranet site!).

Hopefully this message will be selected as one of the ten to be forwarded on to you, and so I thank you in advance for your time!

  22. Try this out... on Making Users Back Up Important Data? · · Score: 1

I've worked in IT for both large 'enterprise' companies as well as smaller 20 - 30 user environments. My suggestion to you is an application called DataArmour. It is an inexpensive solution, and works very well within a small Windows environment since it allows backups to virtually any sort of medium including a mapped network drive (Ex: A tape backup system is not necessary). Hope this helps.
