  1. Satellite internet on Experiences with DirecWay Satellite Internet · · Score: 4, Funny

Features: Space age technology Really means your ping times will be comparable to that of the mars rover.

  2. Bill gates' desktop on Whose Desktop Would You Most Like To See? · · Score: 3, Funny
  3. This is quite possibly the greatest thing 2 happen on Announcing Cooperative Linux · · Score: 4, Informative

Way back when I wanted to try linux. (now 2-3 years ago) I searched far and away to find this ability, because my dad would have gone bonkers should I have installed/booted another OS.

I get the question quite alot. "Can linux run in Windows"... To which I must roll my eyes and explain that it's another OS.

This is going to be very helpful in convincing people to run linux.

I can just picture myself booting knoppix to make my (Anti-PowerPoint) presentations at school.

    Gr8 Stuff!

  4. Parallel init scripts? on Boot Windows Faster, Using Linux · · Score: 1

    I RTFA!

How does it boot in ten seconds? I suspect parallel init scripts.. I realize it wouldn't need alot of services... but heck, ten seconds is still awfully short to run X and a few tiny apps.

Seriously, the next distro to have parallel init, is the distro I am sold to... no functionality would be more essential than booting in less than 20seconds to me.

  5. Silly Spammers on Spirit Sends Debug Information to Earth · · Score: 5, Funny

It appears that while editing the crontab of the rover to send spam, the script-kiddie accidentally added a shutdown -r 24m . "Having the rover send spam was a great idea! When people ping the X-Originating IP, they'll surely timeout!!"

  6. Coincidence? on Spotlight On Windows-Powered Gadgets And Gizmos · · Score: 5, Funny

Now the worlds most hated technology item. can be combined with world's most hated OS!

  7. I tried to get into PureTracks on Exchange Rates Play With Online Music Prices · · Score: 0

Frankly, the response pureTracks Gave me scared me. They use Winblows DRM for their tracks.... If you want to browse their website in anything other than Internet Explorer 5 on win 98, you're in tough luck

Linux (or better yet Mozilla) is going to need some sort of DRM before I can download commercial tracks.

I realise that it isn't being developed becuase it restricts freedom... But isn't the freedom to restrict my freedom being violated?

Not that I like mainstream music anyhoo. But I fear others who do wll need to pay the MS/Apple tax.

  8. They should no better. on Kiss Technology Counters MPlayer GPL Arguments · · Score: 4, Funny

GPL has been tested over and over, and enforced too. Those who don't comply are slashdotted! (And some those who do too!) We slashdotted SCO, now we slashdot KISS.. Fear our wrath!

Now we can spend minutes loading chain emails with 1mb activex controls, and several viruses all at once.

Microsoft: Where will u be able to go today?
Apple: Where will u go while we distract you with random graphics?
Linux: How will u go where you want today?

  11. No wonder everyone outsources to bangalore on 96 Hours Of Open Source Talks In Bangalore · · Score: 1

No wonder everyone outsources to bangalore, each day there is %33 longer!

96/3 = 32 hours in a day.... Heck, with that much time in a day, you wonder why it's just software that gets sourced out.

  12. On Wallop .. I find it threatening on Microsoft Messenger Architect On The Future Of IM · · Score: 3, Informative

I read about wallop briefly.. and it it quite threatening to my linux desktop usage if it should succeed.. Being a social geek, I make friends, join groups. And odds are several will demand wallop for communications (Clubs at university, charitable organizations) if it is all it is supposed to be. Solution? I realize there are web-based deelys... but they really really smell... I could set up PHP-Nuke occasionally, but people will probably prefer wallop 10 years from now when longhorn becomes mature (by way of how many computers run it). Sortof like when MSN took over IM where I live... except this next time, one may not be able to create a linux client.

  13. Thank you on Linux 2.6.0-test11 Kernel Released · · Score: 1

I've been running Gentoo with gaming-sources (has pre-emptive patch)... I get the same problem.... particularly when running OpenOffice, and compiling fishyfudge in background. It happened right in the middle of the "emerge" process and my disk was doing stuff, when it happened.. I too was severely bugged.

  14. Gnu/Karma anyone on Rio Karma 20GB Reviewed · · Score: 2, Funny

The RIO unfortunatly comes with proprietary firmware. I strongly reccomend the birth of GNU/Karma.

  19. Mozilla beware!! on IE6 SP1 Will Be Last Standalone Version · · Score: 5, Interesting

Tying a browser to hardware can be really bad for us mozilla men. Online Banking will jump on it real fast. Secure communication will later require IE for authentication. This would put us at a huge disadvantage. I had a thought: Would it be possible to run a "Virtual Palladium" (software driven)? It'd involve running parts of the software in a virtualization machine like bochs. Microsoft patented the hardware not any software.

  20. Not Quite my friend on Microsoft to Pay AOL $750M in Settlement · · Score: 5, Informative

Microsoft did not play quite fairly. When one installed the latest internet explorer, they were also changing windows DLLs that are preloaded on boot. This gives Internet Explorer a significant speed and stability boost. Netscape, on the other hand does not have that liberty.

I believe there was a quote from the antitrust trial in which a memo was brought forth by the VP saying that Windows should be altered "so that running any other browser should be a jolting experience for the user"

Microsoft may have made a better product in the end. But it came with cheating and sabotage.
