My ReplayTv Model 5040 skips them automagically. Really handy. It occasionally doesn't skip them, or skips early (so you miss a minute or two of the show), but mostly works very well.

Of course, the manufacturer was sued for providing this capability and pulled it from the market. Thanks eBay!

Mark Steyn's thesis is that muslims are taking over the west, "breeding like mosquitoes".

I know nothing about this particular book, nor do I know what the author specifically said in that book

The complaint is for a comment in his book: "The number of Muslims is expanding like mosquitoes." The sad thing is, Steyn is quoting the words of a muslim cleric from Norway, Mullah Krekar. The imam was boasting at how Islam would outbreed Europe: "We're the ones who will change you . . . Just look at the development within Europe, where the number of Muslims is expanding like mosquitoes. Every western woman in the EU is producing an average of 1.4 children. Every Muslim woman in the same countries is producing 3.5 children.

Steyn is being charged with racism for accurately quoting a member of the religion he is allegedly persecuting.
It is a mark of great shame for Canada and its citizens.

My understanding is the Arabic tendency toward extremism is due to a lot of grievances against the west. It's really only after the Iraq invasion and other post 9/11 US actions that Muslim terrorism toward the west started spreading to non-Arabs

    You're understanding is wrong:

From AMERICAN SPHINX The Character of Thomas Jefferson by Joseph J. Ellis

"Several muslim countries along the North African coast had established the tradition of plundering the ships of European and American merchants in the western Mediterranean and eastern Atlantic, capturing the crews and then demanding ransom from the respective governments for their release. In a joint message to their superiors in Congress, Adams and Jefferson described the audacity of these terrorist attacks, pirates leaping onto defenseless ships with daggers clenched in their teeth. They had asked the ambassador from Tripoli, Adams and Jefferson explained, on what grounds these outrageous acts of unbridled savagery could be justified: "The Ambassador answered us that it was founded on the laws of the prophet, that it was written in their koran, that all nations who should not have acknowledged their [islams] authority were sinners, that it was their right and duty to make war upon them wherever they could be found, and to make slaves of all they could take as prisoners...."

This event occured between 1784-1789 while Jefferson was ambassador to France and Adams (2nd president) was ambassador to England.

2nd Objection - How is an author going to make a bazillion gazillion dollars if their book is super-duper popular? The price is fixed before release, what if they under-price it?
2nd Answer - If the book is super-duper popular, by definition that means there will be lots and lots of people who liked it enough to pony up for the NEXT book. So the author can increase their asking price for their next work based on the popularity of their previous work.

  13. Re:Frankly... on How Much is Your Right to Vote Worth? · · Score: 1

Political power can be measured by the number of choices of potentially winning coalitions a voter can join. Since voters in solid red or blue states only have one potential winning side to join, they have no choice of winning sides to join; they can either choose the side that always wins or the side that always loses. This means solid red or blue state voters have no political power in the election.

That is an interesting point, and one I agree with. I always wondered why the African American voting bloc votes 90% plus for the Democratic party? What is the incentive for Democrats to service African American demands or wishes when Democrats know they have their vote?

Not only that, but when you figure that the past few elections have been so close, how catastrophic would it be for Dems if Republicans (or anyone else, for that matter) could shave off even just 10% of the black vote? How hard would that be to do, by focusing on a key issue for African Americans like school choice?

This is a strategy that has worked well for the Democrats courting anti-war religious voters.

I think identity politics is a losing game.
