  1. Re:Who should decide? on Women's Institute Consulted on Nuclear Waste · · Score: 2, Interesting

The millions of people who live along the Columbia River, and drink its water, and eat food irrigated by its water, would disagree with you that Washington State is desolate. Southeast Washington is known for its produce -- wheat, onions and asparagus (and increasingly, wine) from the region are eaten all over the globe.

Always gets stopped and searched. I'm sure it has nothing to do with my membership in the Green Party, and attendance at protests.

Every play, every symphony, every religious document from human history has been available in multiple versions -- whether through the artist's changes, transcription errors, or later, purposeful editing by those with their own agenda.

  4. OO is slow. on OpenOffice Bloated? · · Score: 1

I have OO 2.0, and Office 2003 on a Dell with 1gb RAM and a 2.66Ghz P4. I have the quickstarter loaded for OO, but not for MSOffice. Calc takes twice as long to load as Excel, Writer takes easily 3-5 times as long as Word on identical files. This is true when including starting the app itself, when the app is already open, the times are closer, but OO is still slower.

but only once you have the hydrogen. Hydrogen is not a fuel -- it's a storage medium, and energy is lost when you convert natural gas to hydrogen.

  7. The thing you buy once on Music Labels Charge Too Much For Microsoft · · Score: 1

is the song. I can't tell you how many different audio devices and computers I've used to play the songs that I only bought once.

  8. Hey Orson! on Orson Scott Card Reviews Everything · · Score: 0, Offtopic

Since it influences so many of your own writings, how about reviewing the Book of Mormon? I'm especially interested in your take on the ten lost tribes of Israel becoming legendary sailors, moving to America to become the Amerindians, and the part about black people being the damned sons of Cain. But feel free to talk about the disappearing golden plates, special underwear, or polygamy, if you prefer.

it's about security. Right now, if you pay your $14 bucks, they don't really care what movie you see. But if Matrix 7 is $23, and Rugrats Go Mild is $4, then they have to police every person in the complex.

  12. Re:Music like information wants to be free. on Music Giants Sue Baidu Over Music Downloads · · Score: 1

Actors are the only professionals with average annual wages lower than musicians. Writers fare slightly better, though poets are not broken out of those statistics.

  14. What's not to like? on The Chumbawamba Factor · · Score: 1

Record sales are up, profits are way up, costs are down, due to reduced numbers of artists, and slashed budgets for artist development. P2P tools offer unmatched statistics for targeting songs and artists with marketing dollars. For the record companies, what's not to like? Well, they had already lost their monopoly on recording studios and on album duplication. P2P tools mean that they no longer have a monopoly on distribution. As soon as a few more major label artists figure that part out, record companies will shrivel up like grapes in the sun. The ones that survive will morph into artist promotion and representation companies.

  15. Re:How does it come out? on Hydrogen Stored in Safe High Density Pellets · · Score: 1

Another advantage of electric vehicles is that you can pollute somewhere other than where the vehicle is used, and properly dispose of the pollution. For example, generating solar cells and batteries produces waste, but then that waste can be processed, and re-released, or stored, and the electric vehicle produces no local waste. There is no way to capture the pollution produced by a fossil-powered vehicle.

sorry to be contrary, but country and folk are some of the hardest music to record -- they are largely played on acoustic instruments, which requires nice mics, a good acoustic room to record in, and talented players. Pop, hip hop and electronica, on the other hand, can be recorded with pirated samples and loops on your Dell in your spare bedroom.

She gets her music for free because labels send her CDs in hopes that she will promote their artists. Every business I've ever been involved with gives away a certain amount of product for press and promotional purposes. I personally am not a fan of most RIAA music, and certainly not a defender of their business practices. Most of the music I listen to and buy is from online labels like Magnatune, or directly from the artists themselves.

Well, in Windows at least, you get multiple processes that run all the time, eating up RAM, whether you asked for them at install or not. I don't have an iPod, but iTunes installs that stupid process to look for my iPod. Without asking. Also, with its tight integration with Quicktime, I have frequently found that updating iTunes or Quicktime can mess up my file type preferences for other media apps.

On a Mac, the default behavior for simply playing an mp3 is to open iTunes. There should be a simple file playing utility for file playback that doesn't involve a web storefront and a music database management system if you just want to play a simple file.

You're right, but 10,000 itunes songs has near zero value for me. I can't play them on my computer (no iTunes). I can't play them on my Rio Karma. I could give them to my girlfriend, but she works for the music industry and gets her music for free -- she can't remember ever buying a cd. I guess I could give them to my brother for xmas - 10 per year for the next 1000 years. Won't he be happy.
