  1. Sony pocket reader on Kindle Finally Ready For Global Distribution · · Score: 1

Anyone own a Sony pocket reader? For 199$ it's able to read epub, pdf and html. I was thinking it might be worth a try since there is a ton of classic books I'd like to read (lovecraft, dickens, verne, etc.).

For about the same price I could also get a ipod/iphone touch, anyone using them as readers?

  2. 6Mbps uplink on Japan Launches "Super-Speed" Internet Satellite · · Score: 1

Any Idea how the uplink is supposed to work? Can thousands of 45cm dish all communicate with the satellite at 36,000km simultaneously? I know that years ago you needed a DSL/Dial-up connection for the uplink, is the not the case anymore?

  3. Re:Thanks for the DRM Sony on Sony Reader Now Available · · Score: 1

They do mention 6 different *activated* devices, which probably means you can deactivate one of the devices once you reach the limit in order to use the book on a new device.

This is just speculation as they don't specifically mention it on the website, but I suspect it works similarly to iTunes.

Was in Hiroshima for the holidays and decided to get a DS. To my dismay, they were *sold out* at every major electronic store I went! (Yamada denki, Deo Deo, etc)

I think Nintendo's holiday sales figures will be huge in Japan.

Whoever thought that running unverified code from a cd automatically without warning the user was a good idea should be shot.

Can you see the flag or other objects left behind on the moon from the Apollo missions?

Unfortunately the answer to this question is no. Not even the most powerful telescopes ever made are able to see these objects. The flag on the moon is 125cm (4 feet) long. You would require a telescope around 200 meters in diameter to see it. The largest telescope now is the Keck Telescope in Hawaii at 10meters in diameter. Even the Hubble Space telescope is only 2.4 meters in diameter. Resolving the lunar rover, which is 3.1 meters in length, would require a telescope 75 meters in diameter. So our backyard 6 inch and 8 inch telescopes are not even going to come close!"

Actually the ads aren't louder but they do have more impact. This is mostly due to sound compression, where the softer parts of the ads are raised a few decibels in order to reduce the dynamic range of the sound.
