Assuming Microsoft does actually want to clean up their act, which I'm highly skeptical about, it seems that they'd be criticized for forcing updates just as much as they would for not trying to make adoption of the updates widespread.
I may be wrong but I'm pretty sure that the Python license wasn't GPL-compatible in the early 2.x versions. Becasue of this distros shipped w/ 1.52 (the lastest GPL-compatible version at the time). Python used a GPL-compatible license for 2.1 and later though so it shouldn't be an issue anymore.
I don't think the point of Frontier House was to depict frontier life as it was. It seemed to me the point of the show was to make us think about all of the modern comforts and conveniences that we take for granted.
Referring to this? Homer: "What are you gonna do? Release the dogs?! Or the bees?! Or dogs with bees in their mouth so that when they bark they shoot bees at you?"
Is there any proof that this guy actually extracted the audio from a scanned image? I'm sorry, maybe I've gotten too skeptical but I find it hard to believe that this guy made his hack work so well but he fails to provide any technical detail (or code). Please prove me wrong.
It's kind of like everything else in life though. I have pleanty of things around the house that I am planning to do but haven't gotten around to yet. Is this really all that unexpected?
It seems to me that this was a good opportunity to use the event to stir up more support for the study and cataloging of near earth objects. Haven't you noticed the stories in the past few months where scientists warn that we need better tracking (which I am in favor of)?
I don't know, but to me it seems that while the current state of the linux desktop leaves a LOT to be desired, it is continuing to make improvements. If groups like Redomnd Linux keep making improvements, the linux desktop will keep getting better and more compelling. I admit I only use the linux desktop to toy around right now, but I can definitely see it being viable in the future. Why does everyone have to say that linux on the desktop is dead? Obviously if you don't like it, you don't have to use it. I'll bet that there are pleanty of people that do use it and welcome any improvements. (Okay, I'm starting to rant)
When he talks of the end of "open computing" he's likely referring to new hardware which will control how you use software and media. It's still unclear how they will get hardware manufacturers to adopt these technologies, unless of course there's legislation mandating it.
While the 155MB/s ATM was fast when it worked, there were lots of reliability issues. Hopefully they'll do a better job w/ this.
If you have a CWRU login and are interested in network stats, go here: CWRUnet Stats I don't believe there's any publicly available network information, unfortunately.
I've moved away from using PHP lately but I agree, the php.net documentation is the best online documentation for any language I know of. Especially nice are the function references. All the info you need to get the job done, no other junk in the way. I just wish there was similar online documentation for other languages.
Speakeasy is great. Unilke other ISPs they understand that you may want to run a server from home and therefore don't have any wording against that in their TOS.
So you're saying that software works well enough as it is and we therefore shouldn't make an effort to improve it? That seems kind of silly to me.
Isn't part of the thrill the movement in relation to the ground?
It is for me at least.
There was a pretty decent interview w/ Crichton on NPR's Talk of the Nation - Science Friday today.
The archive audio is usually available in a day or two. The page for this show is here.

You pay $60/year for a domain?

I found this link that says that Microsoft may be sexually transmitted. Maybe that's why it is so rampant?
MS May Be Sexually Transmitted - Doctor
The Register has a report about this w/ some good insights:

People who don't finish projects probably don't complete surveys either
