As projects get older, and developers get more experience in the programming area they often look back and find better ways of doing things...take a look at Enlightenment 17 development. They are constantly going back and making it better than what was initial scoped out. I would not be suprised if the next version is lightening fast than 16

The register seems to editorize abit on what Microsoft is going to do. Rather that show documentation and do the research to show how is going to effect users. I rather see the facts and give a detail summary based on those facts then complain.
As for performance every new iteration of 10.1.x releases have shown alot improvements, evem on older hardware.
I tend to agree..currently with 10.1.5 is speed has been tremendously improved, my G3 powebook, roars with the latest patch. It gets better, with the next iteration 10.2.
The review of gnome is harsh, but I think they need to hear it or how would they change it for the next release. One problem is that usablilty was never big so to speak. Maybe its time to get volunnters to do such..
