bleh. Of course it doesn't work more than any other protection. If the client software checks something before allowing you to going on, simply making the check returning always true instead of making the actual check will disable the protection, as it has always been. So, it seems there are cracked versions around which merely don't connect to steam at all... How shocking. So, the ones who are screwed are those who payed for the game, and cracked it to disable the cd protection, as always. But valve doesn't even have to care, they know their legit customers will just download the non steam cracked version like everybody else. So we have a thing that just generates a lot of fuss, annoy customers, and does nothing to prevent piracy, as usual... There is no possible way to protect a single player game as long as the game is executed on the client, period.

If GNU/QNX was possible, it would mean a lot of market shares for them, and a really good kernel for us. And i'm pretty sure they wouldn't loose in the end, even if some parts they keep closed finally get copied by GPL stuff. It's sad, but get over it. There are tons of "niches" like that which have been molested by the medias and will never gain back their integrity in the eye of the public.
For example, did you knew that real "skins" are in fact against racism, and try to fight the childish nazis who will go as far as commiting murders in their name ? Just like each time you'll hear a pirate on radio he'll label himself a hacker, they've labelled themselves skins because they think it makes them look cool.

BTW: I learned this in a documentary about the skins culture on TV, on a germano-french channel called Arte. If you happen to be able to have this channel, and understand german or french i highly encourage you to have a look at it. What those guys do in this day and time is nearly unbelievable. It's TV, with a brain. Really, the other channels we have are crap at least in france but I can't even understand how this one can exist at the same time as others.
It seems the basis of the channel is that people are intelligent, want to think and are here to enlighten their minds, or see other views on a particular problem.
And they're not especially anti US either. In fact they happened to have a long documentary on Bush and Kerry the night of the election which led me to understand why people could possibly vote Bush.
I still think they are very bad reasons, but i can understand. (If you wonder, I was shocked by the "light" you can see in bush's eyes most of the time. He seems to really believe what he's saying, and seems unstoppable. If i was a christian i'd easily say that yes, this guy has been given a mission by god, and he'll do it for the good of the humanity. But i still believe he's a very dangerous kind of fool personally ;)

You don't need to wait for the browsers to support SVG if what you want is to display a static image. SVG can be converted directly to JPG or PNG before being send to the client. Batik is an apache probject to do that, and it is integrated very nicely into cocoon.
In cocoon, you'd just add a line to your XML transformation pipeline to ask for the result of your SVG transformation to be serialized to JPG instead of being sent directly as XML

exactly, i was in the anarchy online boat when it launched. I quit after maybe one month, and never looked back. The thing is, when you looked at the screenshots, or read early reports you could easily be fooled into thinking that you could do this and that in game. Even if they didn't clearly said you could, lots of things were implied in what they (or the stupid zealot players who refused to admit their game sucked) said.
Bottom line: you can be sure that i'll never buy a funcom game again, and that i'll recommend others to go somewhere else. When i buy something (and pay a monthly fee, on top of that !), I want it to work like it's advertised to do. I don't want any excuses or whatever, if the thing isn't finished, then don't let it out. Treating its customers like shit is the worst thing a business can do, and those customers will remember they were fooled, and make the worst things they can to turn that business into worthless crap.

So, i'd say the cost of an early release is not calculable, it's just the worst thing you can do to your business. (On the other hand, the cost of realeasing a finished product is easily calculable, and i understand it's not always easy to feed enough money in the machine without any return, but still... if the venture capitalists listened to what the people who knows what they are doing are telling them, they'd earn much more money in the end. We had those things for something like $4000 from HP, probably other vendors have similar things, but the bottom line is: it's really worth the money.
