There is plenty of fodder in the above comments that could be remarked upon. (Bashing of US companies outsourcing jobs to India) But I think the current state of the economy shows that in the long run, the outsourcing of low wage/skill jobs to India and China is a good thing.

    "we-don't-need-no-stinking-unions Amazon."

Unions are dead. Japanese car makers, Walmart, and many other business have show us this time and time again. Unions kill creativity, bring little benefit to workers anymore, and will only stagnate the company's growth.

  3. Engineering on Switching from Another Industry to Engineering/CS? · · Score: 1

Well I want to suggest what you probably don't want to hear.

You can't just pickup "Engineering" like you can coding (And Code Monkeys are very different from Computer Science majors anyways). The Engineering disciplines are so detailed to just get into the field without going through the traditional path first. (I.E. A 4 Year College, and preferably 2 more years after that) Sorry, but MIT's OpenCourseware is crap compared to an actual Engineering education.

There is a reason why you don't hear of too many "College Dropout" engineers who make it big in the industry like you do programmers. It's just not that kind of field and with the lack of engineering jobs already, companies aren't giving job offers to people with sub-3.5 GPA's, let alone self-taught engineers.

Stick with being a Doctor, it pays better anyway.

Of course...your second line shows your true colors. Pro-rich, pro-big corporations, blah blah. Same 'ole line from the liberals. Who paints who with broad brush strokes?

  10. What you are doing is not necessarily bad... on How Do You Get Work Done? · · Score: 2, Insightful

As an electrical engineering student, this happens to me -- everyday. Despite what everyone is saying here, there is just no way to avoid it if you are in a demanding major. The web and tv are "escapism" proxies. You just have to weave them into your lifestyle to benefit you instead of having them hurt you.

    My advice to manage:
    1) Set your life full of as many deadlines as you can handle. As an undergrad I am a teaching assistant, take grad classes, work in the robotics research lab on a group project, and explore new things I'm interested in (Linux, Computer Vision, and Robotics). Needless to say, I don't get home until Dinner. With constant deadlines, you will always be on your toes -- and that is a good thing. Nothing brings out the creative juices like a deadline.
    2) Leave the TV ON during your favorite shows and do school projects that require the use of your computer. Yes...leaving the TV on is usually a bad thing, but if you can manage these two things at once you'll be happier then sitting in front of a comp wishing you could watch your favorite show.
    3) When not watching TV and just plain studying, take a break every half hour to read a website article or chat for a few mins with a friend.

So what are the downsides of this plan? You are constantly stressed with all the work that needs to be done and some of your real life relationships outside of school suffer. Is this a bad thing? Depends on what kind of person you are and what is most important to you. It's allowed me to keep a 4.0 and to compete for a spot in a top grad school. (Hopefully)

But completely online Universities? You miss half of what college is all about. As important as the classroom knowledge that is imparted to you, it isn't the complete picture in an education. You don't get the peer interaction, the bouncing of ideas off fellow students and professors, volenteering in a research lab to put your classroom skills to work, and the self disovery.

The Matrix is what Star Wars was to a previous generation. But I don't think I've ever been so disapointed by a movie sequel. Not even Lucas' butchering of the Star Wars universe with Episodes I and II could compare to what the Wachowski brothers did to their world.

As hot as Carrie-Anne Moss is, did we need a sex scene that lasted 3 minutes and ended with a shot of Keanu's ass? Somethings are better left to the imagination. Even before that, the whole relationship seemed forced on the viewer, not something natural that developed in the first. And the cake scene, wtf was that?

The whole movie's plot points just seemed forced, as if they were strung loosely together only to get to the next Bullet-Time moment. The original had that gritty feel; made you feel as if the characters were in peril the entire time. Trinity dying? Ha! Lets just reverse the ending of the first movie and play it into this one!

And the ending...how do you end on that? Give us a satisfying conclusion if you are going to have a cliffhanger. (Similar to The Empire Strikes Back)
