I am waiting for the day where someone invents a computer that doesn't need to be cooled or generate excess heat.
Think about the lightbulb....A standard 60-watt incadescent bulb generate lots of heat. A better design is something like the LED bulbs that generate the same amount of lumens, with much less power, and more importantly little to no heat.
Good design can allow these devices to not generate excess heat, hence eliminating the need for the raised floor.
I disagree - both Windows and major distros of Linux are easy to install. I would also argue that Windows has better driver support for devices like the newer wireless cards and other USB devices.
9 times out of 10, for a desktop OS, Windows will be the right choice for most people (I'm also including the non-Slashdot crowd when I say people).
Its ashame that techies have a tainted view of Windows because they had a bad expierence or too many BSODs. Anyone who uses Windows 2000 or earlier has these problems. Windows XP is much more solid though.
I run Windows XP as my primary OS and then run Ubuntu Linux under Virtual PC. Its awesome - I can be in both Windows and Linux at the same time without having to reboot. You can also easily test your web applications under IE without having to use a different PC.
If you are unhappy with your Linux desktop and want the ability to run Windows and Linux at the same time, give Virtual PC a shot.
Using something like Virtual PC is a much better way to test drive different Linux distros(or any x86 OS).
No need to reboot or wait for the CD to load. You can also run multiple Linux distros at the same time and compare features between the OS's.
Whats most refresing is the ability to switch between Linux and Windows without rebooting. Dual booting is so 1990's. As PC's get faster and more powerful, running mulitple OS's at the same time is a much more powerful option.
I currently run Ubuntu under Microsoft's Virtual PC product. I can develop and test my apps in Perl and then switch back to Windows to run my Windows apps and games.
In the face of a declining market for MS Windows...
Declining market for MS Windows??? Show me some facts that says the market is declining for MS Windows! Microsoft just posted record profits for the quarter. How is MS Windows declining???
I love the "Here's 100 gazillion reasons why Windows XP sucks and Mac/Linux/Unix/Gentoo/anything other than Microsoft is better" threads.
The same bullshit gets said.
Its like arguing for the sake of arguing.
Bottomline, is that Windows XP is very usable. Most people out there use it and while a handful of their boxes can get owned if they don't run Windows update, 99% of them work just fine and are very productive with them.
If you can't see the truth, then go fart in a paper bag!

It will be interesting to see what Google is like in a couple years. It seems that all roads lead to Microsoft....

Typo in headline - comnbine should be combine.
For some reason I read the headline as they are migrating from Linux to white paper.
And for a short period of time I actaully believed it and didn't think I had to re-read the headline.

If you have never used Virtual PC or want more information, check it out at http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtualpc/defaul
Good luck!
Guess you don't use AIM or GAIM then?
Is it me or does this guy look like an Indian version of Bababooey from Howard Stern???

I think web services are going to be the next big thing.

Do a search for 'Family Guy' or 'Simpsons' and it will return various parts of the episode including the script.
I think we can see where this is going - they want to archive every episode. Great idea!
I also heard that the more time spent reading Slashdot, the fatter you will be. But you will be one of those smart fat persons...yay!
I can see it now....
"Mom!!!! My cell phone battery is low, can you wash my clothes so it can recharge???"
oh dear....

JUst curious - does H&R round to the nearest dollar.
I didn't realize it, but I heard you can round to the nearest dollar and ignore the cents.
Anyone else do this?
How about a Slashdot Suggest - it would score your article as you type it :-)

Eh - so what? His joke is relavent to the calender topic.

"It's a UNIX system!" I remember hearing that and my secret geek meter rose about 10 points in the theatre.

Keyhole is a great interface for moving around in 3D on a map.
This is just part of the restructuring. I heard they had to layoff some of the users as a cost cutting move. :-)
...and in other news, Hormel is giving out Diamond Spam cans to anyone caught and convicted sending spam.
*sigh*
....does it take to screw in an LED bulb?

Kids these days would probably just visit a cube solver webpage like http://www.wrongway.org/cube/solve.html instead of peeling stickers.
Speaking of stickers - anyone remember sticker collecting. Do kids today even know about stickers?
