Don't go with ANOTHER big corp that will eventually kill it's Linux distro (namely Redhat and it's Fedora, CentOS spinoffs)... choose something really FREE (as in freedom), like Debian.
but will undoubtedly get modded down like you... but I think this is something that should be modded up, not down. I'm sure many others agree. I have a deep distrust of any large corporation because the end motive is always just money. Novell will drive SuSe into the ground. So, stop being wussies and mod the parent UP! You know you want to.
"Ironcially, if either Steve Jobs or Bill Gates were running a big Linux distro this is very likely the approach they would take"
And also ironically, the linux kernel would no longer be an open source project. Really, Linux is open source, first and foremost. If you don't want to play by the open source rules, you are free to start your own OS project... or just use Windows. I don't want to see Linux change it's philosophy... and I hardly think it will.
What you say is certainly true... yet we keep hearing over and over about how opensource projects need to consalidate, opensource projects need more money, opensource projects need support from big players, and on and on....
That is all completely untrue and misses the whole point of opensource! So, messages such as yours need to be kept being said to combat the other wrong messages that keep being said.
I run Firefox on my Linux box here at home... and I just installed the google extension to check it out. Upon restarting my Firefox, it comes up for a brief second, then promptly crashes and dissappears! So, I had to load up Opera to go look up how to manually remove extensions so I can get Firefox to run again. Seems like a piece of shitty coding to me. Is this the best Google can do?
You never know when Novell will just drop Suse. You never know when Redhat will drop free redhat and give the community the crappy fedora. You never know when the almight dollar is behind it.
I prefer sticking with Linux distros like Debian or Slackware, etc... I know when I wake up tomorrow that they will still be there.
I could never find a group of people to play with and all the many hours needed to spend in preparation and play.
I recently discovered a board game called Heroscape, which is awesome because it looks like a table-top D&D type game, but plays with a much simplified set of rules. The sets/maps/characters/story are completely customizable, which adds to the fun.
I just wish to thank Hasbro for creating this wonderful product to let us "minor" geeks play to. And to keep this post on topic, I am a computer geek and consider myself creative. So, I would say that geeky and creative people like to play games. Duh.
And basically it was the same old MS shiat we've come to expect. MS wants to work with the OS community... yeah right, by showing how easy it is to tie all your systems together with a windows server box... so you can eventually phase out those nasty open source boxes. There are NO good MS employees, they have all been brainwashed and are really only interested in the money.
If this were to come true, which it obviously won't as there is too much money to be made by the corps to keep it the way it is, there will be a lot new IT positions opening. The support and maintenance of this split-internet system will be a mess and companies won't be able to outsource as easily anymore.
Geeks and nerds everywhere are staging revolts and some are committing suicide because of lack of a complete "net fix", as they call it. There are rumors of the "underground" world-wide network starting, but it is believed only the ones calling themselves "1337" and using software called "linux" have access this mysterious technolody.

...they are offering the $10 million^H^H^H^H^H^H^H version.

Sorry, that should have read 4GB, not 40GB. Yes, a measly 4 GB!
Hmmm.. well, so far, the best I'm seeing is some 40GB drives that cost around $500. Way too much to pay for way too little in my opinion.
I really REALLY want a dependable, long-lasting, fast and ample-capacity RAM drive. No more spinning platters please.
Really, they are nice KDE based distros.

all the Firefox installs at the lab here. I'll even download them a few times each for every system, to make sure it downloads properly.
Stop spreading republican lies, the liberals aren't anti freedom of speech!
A person or two dying will not a distro kill. The key to truly free Linux distros is that there is a huge community behind them.
Really, if I were thinking about buying a console, I would wait for the Play Station 3.

I'll start. MySQL loves SCO and is in bed with them!! Boycott MySQL! Use PostgreSQL.
Will their servers run Linux?
That looks like Trumpet Winsock from the windows 3.1 days. Are you sure that's even a linux screenshot?
Well well, have you tried Mandriva, SuSe or Ubuntu? Obscure command line codes? Command line? You obviously haven't used any modern distros.

They will end up being barren desert wastelands. We will be opening up more beach resorts here in Canada.

But I must admin, Google Hires rootbeer has a certain ring to it.
