    Whilst your point is valid, I'm afraid the metaphor isn't - Ultra-Edit doesn't allow you to produce any files which you couldn't with notepad. It just lets you produce them quicker.

    Whilst it is a good thing, i'm not sure its about nintendo working hard to not screw over - they region locked the gamecube, and the official mags paint importers as being only slightly better than hardened criminals. I suspect its more something about maximising the chances of a successful launch + the difficulties in building a half decent region coding setup into something thats already going to be a bit cramped (don't forget, they have to fit a gba in there as well! [assuming they go the same route as in previous gb's])

    No. That there is a contract isn't being questioned. its whether they can produce a contract that he has signed that has a limit clause on. Although even then the point is probably moot - in practise AUP's are roughly on a par with EULA's in that they basically assign all rights to terminate without notice / disavowing of liabilities to the isp. n.b. I'm not too hot on US law, but under british law some of the above is actually illegal (there are certain circumstances where liability cannot be avoided iirc), in addition you cannot get out of 'Duty of Care'

    Interesting idea. The price is not actually capped in the law however (merely stipulated as a nominal sum). This is to avoid the problem of either setting a value which is either (a) ridiculous in 10 years time, (b) needs changing every couple of years or (c) linked in some complicated manner to inflation/interest rates/LIBOR/whatever. * iirc the currently accepted maximum (according to recent cases) is 50. * What I don't get is why they don't handle in the same way as fines - the law outline a series of levels of fines (e.g. theft == 6 months and/or upto level 2 fine iirc). These are then altered on an annual (I think) basis. And no, Inal, but relatives are, and I have studied law.

    Whether Sony has been trying to take the brand over (either intentionally or not), Marvel's plan probably goes more like this: 1.licence brand out to movie studio 2.big movie made, everyone makes lots of money, more films started. 3.Movie studio invests lots of money to make next movies 4. threaten to attempt to revoke licence (we are here) 5. Movie studio sees investment threatened, gives marvel big wads of cash. 6 (sorry, had to put it) profit!!!

    Not to mention that the windows widget set is done by dll. Do you wish to have to include the entire code for creating windows/ buttons / menues /etc in each of your programs, and if so what is the point in writing for windows - you may as well write a dos program.

    Whilst this is a great idea, I have one point to make: It won't do a thing about piracy. Why? because all the 133t w4r3z d00dz will just pirate the bonus material. Sure one person will have to buy it, but it only needs one person who has bought it to then realease it...

    not to be flippant, but since they were talking about 56k modems, which get about 4k/s average, and a typical (ide) harddrive has a (sustained) data throughput of approx 10mb/s that gives a speed-up of (10*1024*1024)/4 = 2,621,440x faster, more for SCSI, although the time taken to search the fat for the addresses of the chunks would probably bring it down a bit...

    Depends what you want. Personally, I want it all (I use mine as a laptop substitute), and for that, none can touch the 9210i imho (well, except the 9210 (less ram and no official opera) and 91xx (b/w but 486 arch - they got dos and even (limited) linux running on it...)).

    Yes, code could cause the phone to dial up (and we will assume you don't notice / it figures out how to fiddle the status icons at the top) BUT it would be nice to choose to take the risks (As I have been doing with first the 9110 and now the 9210), or at least do something like the new nokias are doing and having (limited) Java support.
    Even microsoft let you do it (you can d/l the SDK for the phone off their site, and it is possible to buy non-locked SPV's (they are selling them in one of the scandinavian countries)...

    Why? Because you can have a small, quiet, nicely put together server box for around £140 + modchip costs (which if you are handy with a solder, are quite small).

  20. Good and bad points on Super-small Voice-controlled Wireless Phone · · Score: 1

    A company I worked with briefly bought a couple. The key points were: (a) they are blighters to get working (b) the driver d/l is 170mb (the just up an iso of the latest cd) (c) the quality of sound is good, and it does link nicely into outlook (d) the easiest way to use it is to use the software's OSD to dial (also how to enter things like p/wrds or cc numbers over the phone) Initially the voice recognition was a bit dire, but it did improve with use; although we noted that the biggest boost to accuracy could be gained by talking with an american accent (honest!)...

    If they were tolling the whole of London, then this could theoretically work (barring the question of what the boundaries of London are and the point that as the city gets larger, since they tend to be roughly circular, the circumferance increases with the square of the radius of the city...) BUT the big problem is that its only a relativly ill defined area that is affected (in some instances half a street is tolled, half isn't), making the use of toll booths along the boundary tricky to say the least...

    Hopefully not - since windows runs approx 20% of the time, and starbucks is only potentially evil when its shut (lets say potential evil weighs in at 50% evil), that gives us ms based starbucks toting coffee pc evil rating of: 0.2*1 + 0.8*0.5 = a mere 60% evil!

    (assuming they do make a new series):
    Unfortunatly, the odds on them using any of the remaining gravel pits (they do exist, although most of the ones I know have been turned into clay pigeon sites or similar) are pretty slim.
    But if we are *really* lucky, then they will use the very latest in 3d tech and blue-screening (cinema, not MS) to have rendered backdrops of badly disgused gravel pits!!
    We live in hope.

    I'm not 100% on this (someone correct me if I'm wrong, please) but there is no way something like this could come out in the UK? I don't believe there is an 'unlicenced' range of frequencies overhear...
