>It's just a matter of time before the RIAA closes down closed networks like the FastTrak (Kazaa/Morpheus) network now is with these new authentication schemes.
that may be a problem.. fasttrack is a dutch company , so doesn't fall under US law. Especially after the US ruling on the french fines for yahoo.com, which basically says a french judge cant rule on a US company. conversely, this would mean a US judge cant impose penalties on a dutch company. Unless they're complete hypocrits..
No, you're copying. stealing involves someone losing something. If I steal my friend's car, my friend doesn't have a car anymore. If I copy my friend's movie, nothing changes for my friend. The official legal term is piracy (well... it is in the Netherlands)
yeah, acoustic bovine was a success.. but acoustic bovine was pioneered in India, which is obviosly why cows are protected there. They even managed to sneak it into religion..;)
>Don't blame Microsoft, the fact that they know how to play the game better than everyone else should not be frowned upon.
Only as long as they stick to the rules. Like a footballplayer who ALWAYS goes down in the penalty area. Just hoping to get a penalty. Now they've been caught for faking injuries.. They don't play the game better.. they bend the rules of the game.
here's something I noticed in my video rental store (the one I go to, that is.. I don't own one..). Be aware that this is in the Netherlands.
1. a US movie comes out in the US. pretty soon, it appears on DVD, region 1 (US region)
2. region 1 DVD is imported in the netherlands. This is legal due to copyright law, and the fact that region coding is not legally backed up (no, it's not illegal AFAIK). DVD players are usually chipped (i.e. can play several regions).
3. DVD gets rented out (region 1 version.. no subtitles, which doesn't bother most people)
4. Movie appears in theatres
region coding could just be a very very very stupid thing, and leads to better and earlier availibility:)
weather patterns may or may not cross the equator. I have no idea. but spreading weather patterns is something entirely different then dispersing a gas worldwide. The weather patterns are made of dynamic stuff like wind.

which makes it quite undutch, since "van der" is not used in the last name itself. a typical entry would be "Ven, van der". Also note the lack of capitalization (in the name, not the post). Now to get to the point.. I have none.
hmm.. I dont agree with you on government being inefficient per se. IMO, the main goal of a corporation is to shift as much money as possible towards said corporation. The money has to come from someone(the proverbial "rest"). So rest gets less money, corporation gets more. Oh well.. you're not leaning to any of the extremes, I guess we could still stand in the same room without bashing eachother's head in;) We both seem to agree that extremism is bad..
with the main difference that in a communist system, you pay taxes to government, which in theory would flow back to the people. in a corporate-run world, taxes go to corporations (=profits), which does not flow back to the public. Obviously, both these scenarios are extremes.. and extremes almost never work.
xp is decent. if you're on 95/98/me, upgrading to xp is probably worth it, if only for stability. if you're running w2k, and you're happy with it, don't expect xp to make much of a difference. bootup time of xp is good, although I've had a little trouble with the bootloader (one of the reasons I went back to w2k). the FisherPrice/Luna shell.. well.. you either love it or you hate it. Fortunately it's easily turned off. So is the new layout of the start menu. My conclusion is: if you're running 95/98/me, upgrading to xp is probably a good idea if your hardware is new enough. I don't have much experience with NT4, but hardware support in xp is better. If you're running w2k, only upgrade to xp if you have problems with it.
>Getting the size wrong by a factor of TWO is unlikely
indeed.. usually it's a factor 8 (Gb vs. GB), or they're using 'decimal' kB.

ok.. basically this is how I look at it..
for the example, I will use a magazine that also has ads.
open the magazine on the index page.
What's on the index page? all the content.
What's not on the index page? easy.. ads aren't. They may be in a separate list, usually on just about the last page. This is how I look at content vs ads, and I'm pretty sure this is not a unique view.

Not reading certain parts, like ads, is NOT the same as republishing. The reason why I cite newspapers, and the fact that ads are not content is because, under dutch law, ads need to be labeled to distinguish them from content. Ads are not content by law here. I also dont feel guilty for not reading certain stories that don't interest me, and I would be very surprised if you did.

Good thing/. doesn't expect me to view ads. If it did, it would require one of the graphical browsers.
Actually, the term piracy (piraterij) under dutch law is used for certain kinds of copyright infringement.. so strictly speaking, calling it piracy is correct (at least in the Netherlands, and probably more countries.) Calling it theft however is a gross misrepresentation of the truth.
