In order to download a track from iTunes you have to purchase it. However, this page states that "No purchase necessary". I'm sure the legal department said they have to throw that in, but how else are you going to win without purchasing anything? Pepsi bottle caps? Gift certificate downloads? The average person is going to have to buy something.

Be was great back in the day, I just don't know whether it will survive, regardless of which incarnation it's presently in. I saw the audio app running, which is one of the things Be was good for, but how much more will it take before we see much commercial Be software?

As it is, you're lucky to find a Mac title or two in some establishments, and occasionally can find a shelf or area devoted to it.

Be, however, seems to be missing from just about any shelf anywhere.

What would it take to make this change? Is it one of those "yeah, we heard about be, but it's 'so yesterday'" sort of things?

I love competition, and want to see as many OS vendors pitting themselves against each other as possible. That's when I think true innovation comes out, those times where you've really got to get the one up on your rivals.

I know there are alternatives on some telnet BBSs, but it's just not the same as waiting to dial in on Terminate or PCPlus and getting that busy signal. If I could be sitting at the local coffee shop, I would happily log in to whatever was available and check recent message boards and games, even though it'll never be the same as it was 15 years ago.

    Right.

Take the following example (stolen from one of the forums mentioned in the blurb):

"...software piracy is nowhere near as bad as these companies make out (it's just an excuse to explain why their games aren't selling, when the truth is it's because they're crap).

In the second place, I can find a crack for a game in 0.5 seconds time. "

Ok, wait just a second, could this guy/girl be any more contradictory? Piracy isn't as bad as they make it out to be, but he can find a crack in half a second ? Whew, sure sounds like piracy is pretty damn rampant and easy to come by to me.

I still believe that one of the most efficient methods of attracting the attention of a company is to write them a letter.

However, don't tell them you are going to pirate their software, instead tell them that exactly what you disagree with and let them know in a professional manner that unless they change those business practices, you will no longer purchase any of their products. Tell them you are going to spread the word.

Word of mouth is an incredible advertising medium. Just look at Slashdot. If a company has a great product, it is going to make the rounds, people will talk about it, people will use it.

Corporations also realize that people with bad experiences are much more vocal than those with good ones, which further compounds their issues.

I really hate to be cliche here, but don't be a part of the problem, be a part of the solution and do something constructive!
