I installed it 14 months ago to speak with someone for its... intended use so to speak. We used it for day to day communication for nearly a year I would say, it became a misery of an App. Android version has bugs which haven't changed in 14 months, despite bug reports from me and more than 1 (flash focus bug, black screen bug)
I contacted them and asked them to add an option of 'trusted snappers' which works in inverse, all your text / chat is PERMANENT and only optional stuff disappears. Nope, nothing, so you either 'hold' the text down to lock it as you type it out (if you remember) or you risk the receiver missing your once only messages because the cunt of an application either crashes or 'black screen bugs' them so they open it but can't see the text, but it's marked as read and of course, deleted.
I got into arguments with people for not replying to things I had apparently read and hadn't. It's a really poorly coded piece of shit and I am glad to be rid of it.
I was reluctant to switch to whatsapp or viber but I've done so for whats app and I have to say, it's pretty well designed and I'm happy with it. Especially the web client option.
Long story short, gotta be harsh here, but fuck snap chat, if they are market listed, someone short them, please.
I suppose it works mostly well and it's fast but as a nerd who's been on Firefox since before it was called Firefox (I've finally forgotten the other name) I prefer FF.
I mean, ok, google don't want me to skin Chrome? Ok fine, fine - but do you think I can find a decent tab mix plus alternative? I *NEED* tab mix plus, I utterly need it. I 'learnt' tabbed browsing with NetCaptor (skin over the top of IE, added tabbed browsing, it was very good for its day) and I found and still find the tap ordering the most logical with it, by far. Tab Mix Plus provides incredibly powerful tab control options, so I can replicate NetCaptor under FF.
My firefox does this: *Middle click a link*, open in the background, one tab slot to the RIGHT of the current tab (inserting itself) *CTRL N* (new tab) opens a tab, one tab slot to the RIGHT of the current tab, in the foreground *Close tab*, closes tab and takes you to the tab to the LEFT of the one you just closed. Duplicate tab (CTRL-ALT-T), same as middle click, opens a copy of the existing tab to the RIGHT of current tab and in the background
Now I suppose if you're not used to that system and you're used to chrome, that probably sounds awful? For me, I find it immensely logical. I NEVER want a new tab or duplicate tab or middle click tab to open right at the very end of my tab grouping, why would I want that? I want this new piece of data, right next to me, where I'm working.
I don't know if finer tab control options are blocked in Chrome or not but no such addon yet exists, built in ability to do this doesn't exist. Considering the age of Chrome and the popularity of TMP, I can only guess Chrome has simply not go the option to do it.
I do use chrome but it's relegated to be my 'second monitor, good at youtube / flash video' browser while I use FF for my main work.
FWIW I'm... an extreme browser, likely extremely addicted to the web. Right now I've managed to close several hundred tabs this week and I'm down to about 200. I like to be as low as possible of course but right now I have 200 open, it's just how I browse.
I was nearly 16 when Doom came out, as a young nerd at a high school in a rough area, it was certainly an influential game (as was my PC in general) to get escapism from the bullying one gets in a shithole neighbourhood and as a nerd, which 22 years ago, wasn't a cool thing.
I played the shit out of the game, at least for the next 4 years. I recall playing RS232 matches with 2 other pals, taking turns since it was only 2 player of course. Until we saved up pocket money basically for 16bit Coax network cards. (I still have my t-piece and terminator) I will say figuring out IPX / SPX when you have no goddamn idea what you're doing is tricky but when it works, wow.
I played basically all released versions of the game, none of the alpha stuff sadly. I recall getting hold of the patches which were differential patches back then. They took forever to patch the data but saved space. IIRC the release for Doom 2 was Doom 2 v1.666 at launch - they eventually patched the Doom 1 engine to the same level and beyond (last I recall was 1.9 or 1.9b or some such)
I learnt benchmarking thanks to Doom, in our MP matches, you had a 1/4 of a second advantage if the............ loading dots would load the WAD quicker, I got VLB HDD controllers and all kinds of wacky stuff set up to get the game to load quicker and timed stuff.
I was a keyboarder initially, until we played it on a BBS in Melbourne, Australia - where I eventually learnt to go full mouse controls, I was one of the better keyboarders out there, but mouse playing was a whole new level. I bought specific mice for the game, like the Logitech Wingman gaming mouse, no wheel to get the way or excess buttons, great shape. https://www.google.com.au/search?q=logitech+wingman+gaming+mouse&hl=en&tbm=isch&gws_rd=cr&ei=Zyk5V8rHJ5Do0gS11JqQCQ
I remember E1M1 at some point in development was modified, the original version didn't have the button to the left near the platform, which opens the window, to go out to the slime (armor) secret early. Dunno when that was modified, perhaps at the stage of Ultimate Doom. I've finished the entire game 100/100/100 (items / secrets / kills) but doubt I could anymore.
Like many advanced MP players, I know the trick to fire the BFG directly at a wall you're facing, then strafe out from behind the wall to kill people instantly. We used to wall run too, mostly on Doom 2 Map01 along the hallway.
I played in the 1'st PAX Australia 2013 classic gaming Doom event over in their PC hall. I think about 30 or 40 players entered. I came in 4'th IIRC, kid who won was like 24 or 25 (I was 36 at the time) I was pretty impressed to be honest, to see someone so young have a reverence for Doom. (Although I've always had a beef with using the plasma as a bit of a 'cheap' gun and to this day, I'm still reluctant to use the thing)
I know Doom 2, map30 is almost unplayable on a recommended requirements system, if you're not quick at finishing it. The amount of enemies the icon of sin spawns in, combined with the archviles means the map ends up with a heap of enemies on screen at a time and the game effectively 'swaps to disk' Even just 5MB of ram instead of 4MB, makes a world of difference.
I know the BFG noise trick, on map01 of Doom2, if you time your fall off the ledge along with your firing of the weapon, the BFG firing screech is silenced by your drop sound instead so people don't hear you fire it.
I know, in my *opinion* Doom 1, Episode 1 is 'real doom' to me. The atmosphere is fantastic, it's dark, the maps have an overall mars base theme and tileset, there's monster closets, the monster quantity, for the most part isn't unreasonable. I still think Doom 3 was underrated, it captured the atmosphere well. I still don't 'get' Serious Sam, 9/10'ths of the game felt like a shitty.WAD f
I don't believe this one uses the new standard. If you're just using it to play music or videos, it's fine but (IIRC) a high end gopro would like a faster card when recording 4k 60fps for example. I'd like to see all cards utilise this sooner than later.
I always assumed you can get away with some relatively stupid shit (I've come close regarding our Australian PM and housing prices) but within reason. Outright threats of course, very stupid thing to say but the law generally can interpret angry voter / reader from genuine loonatic.
That comment reply is honestly pretty tame, it's not pointing the finger at who would be pulling the hypothetical trigger, it could infact be a sarcastic reply or whatever.
To think D.H.S is investigating this is pretty scary. What next? Should I pack my bags if I write "Obama is a doo-doo head" or something?
My understanding as a total encryption and technical newbie (compared to most of slashdot) is the 5c is a weaker, simpler phone, the 5s with it's thumbscanner has some kind of hardware encryption key (or some such?) between each component, so replacing a component to fake thumb prints or something like that isn't possible.
I'm not sure EXACTLY how the c was hacked to be honest but TLDR, my understanding is the s is vastly more secure, going forward obviously for newer models too.
I see downsides to it, definitely - when it comes to death in the family kind of stuff but honestly, I don't want people with access to my stuff without my approval, ever.
This isn't me angry about the forced App store in Windows 10, it's about the culmination of all the shitty things they've done in the past 18 months.
They might have a history long, long ago of being quite evil but there was a period there, where I personally, really didn't see them being all that bad, within reason for a business anyhow. It's now getting utterly ridiculous.
Yeah proprietary Mac store is frustrating but for the most part with MacOS you're the consumer, under Windows 10 and the spying stuff (which is sadly, mostly true) you're the product.
I just looked it up because of this article, that was nearly a full 2 years ago. I imagine several significant holes in iOS have likely been patched by now. Apple are seemingly getting close to having an airtight phone, assuming you have it locked of course with a reasonable pass / pin. This seems like a good thing for the consumer.
I'm not your normal/. "#$%! Microsoft" kinda guy. I've been an MS guy my whole life, only dabbling in other OSs briefly.
Often you see people (here) chanting about #@$%^ Microsoft or "are you surprised" or any other snarky remark, I traditionally dismiss these as the extreme tinfoil people who would hate whatever they do, regardless.
That being said, Microsofts moves with Windows 10 have gone from "hmm ok that's questionable, but I can see past it" and "this looks desperate, it's kinda shitty, but oh well" and "well that's definitely dumb, but I'm sure some great nerd will hack up an awesome all-in-one little 'fixit' tool for Windows 10 to take out all the crap"
It's now at a point where it's outright sounding BAD. Like proper, bad. The things they keep doing are worse and worse, more and more intrusive. I thought the pushy installer was rough but ok, once it's on, they aren't going to abuse it too much, they are getting their data, from most people who aren't clever enough to turn stuff off. Nope! It's getting SO bad, I'm really thinking of sticking with 7 as long as humanly possible. Maybe I really will end up a Mac guy after all, or something?
Good lord help me, Google god damned maps! I'll try my best to keep it short and sweet:
The DUMBEST thing those idiots have done is remove the 50/50 split from the street view option. It's without a doubt, the most moronic @#$%ing thing they've done. It's incredibly frustrating.
You used to be able to do a 50/50 split, one of what you're looking at and 2 of where you "are" on the map what direction you are "facing". Any idiot with basic N.E.S.W directional skills, found this incredibly useful. We can still use street view and find what the building looks like that we're after, but it's much harder to identify where on the map it is, what direction it's facing, what the number is. We can do it, definitely, it's still down the bottom in the corner, VERY small - but the old system was incredibly easy to navigate in a combo street / maps view. I can't even put into words properly just how much superior the old version was, vastly is a big understatement.
Perhaps you guys are sick of me but I'm personally getting frankly, fucking sick of typing shit up like this time and time again about applications, phones, websites, because idiots feel compelled to change things, not for the sake of improvement, but for the sake of change.
It's times like this I WISH slashdot had a much larger audience, I WANT some piece of shit at Google to see this post and understand just how badly they fucked up. Yes, they did, fuck up, I'm sorry but there's no other way to put it.
Tired of these changes, tired of things becoming worse for the sake of it. Google maps is literally an inferior product to what it was many YEARS ago.
P.S Don't bother going back through the feedback system to these wallies, they have no idea. It's as bad as sending feedback to the Government at this point
I'm nearly 40 and I'm with the millenials and your post, it's absoloutely on the money. Might want to add, due to money printing, general inflation, that the ability to even buy a home and survive with the basic needs is becoming more difficult.
The only reason we don't have riots yet is because the lowest of the middle class is being made poor, soon it'll be the middle of the middle class and so on. The division from the rich and poor is growing, rapidly.
I'm only 38, with half the skills you have and I'm already shitting myself. The IT game is incredibly ageist. I feel like after about 35, unless you've got SERIOUS bloody skills, people think of you as an antique.
In my situation, I'm a lazy slob, I don't want to climb the corporate ladder, I'm happy at a particular position, making X amount of money and hoping to survive long term through being fiscally responsible* with my money and drying to invest well*. Just because I'm ok with a 2nd level job in my late 30's doesn't mean I'm some kind of failure:/
* Being fiscally responsible, what a laugh, I've learnt my lesson with finance, the way the finance industry is and how money is being printed around the world, getting ahead and staying ahead is an incredibly difficult thing to do.
Very little if the rumours are true (it's his WORK phone and he deliberately destroyed his personal phone) one would conclude if he's smart enough to destroy the personal one deliberately, then clearly the work one had fuck all on it.
I forgot to address my point! Facebook can be as transparent and open as they like about it and unbiased, ultimately the USERS will be mostly sharing biased articles all over FB, regardless. If you're friends with a heap of lefties, you're going to see a lot of Bernie and Hilary articles, if you're friends with Republicans you'll see Cruz and Trump articles.
The "normal" media are pushing their own agenda, Hilary gets significantly more articles than Bernie, despite how close they are. Bernies speeches are overlooked etc.
Furthermore, Trump, who I won't deny is an idiot is being totally demonised by the media and (as usual) misrepresented. Once you start looking into how the media addresses things, it's ridiculous.
Recently articles went around about how terrible Trump is, because he's talking about dick size at a debate (or some such) everyone printed it, I nearly groaned myself, then reminded myself just how often the media misrepresents things at the moment. I look into it, sure enough, someone ELSE brought up dick size, implying he had a problem and he simply said "no problem there thanks". So was Trump bringing up his penis size at a debate because he's childish or was he addressing some other idiot?
Once you start to learn about the media representation (I almost wish I never discovered it) it's a hard thing to not notice. At least I question a lot more of the stuff I read now and look for multiple sources. (Note: This doesn't make me a Trump supporter, or a Republican in the slightest, I'm not even from the states)
I've encountered the Reddit thread on this very topic and while MOST people are anti phone use of any kind, the quantity of people endorsing silent texting is incredibly high, I'm effectively being called "old man" for saying it's distracting to have a light on in the cinema.
Considering the average/. age, I'd say we're all fucking doomed, the generation below us needs gassing.
I've read about rm for years and never seen this suggestion before. I don't understand why it's not put in place, that's a great idea to be honest. A simple solution and easily bypassed by impatient admins with a -now or -y in the command line for auto approval.
I get the impression it's an epidemic of talking and phone use in the US cinemas, I've got several US friends and anecdotally online there appears to be a LOT of talking or phoning over there, especially from one particular demographic (hey, I keep hearing it consistently)
I had a US friend come over here for a month and she checked out the cinema 4 times with me in that time, she was utterly shocked that (for the most part) people are generally quiet here, no phones out, etc. It does happen but I get the impression FAR more over there.
Will the cinemas which now offer a movie going experience for inconsiderate assholes who want to talk and use their phone, surely the regular experience will be policed better, right? I'll yell at people if I have to over here (not often) but I get the impression doing it over there might end up in a fight.
I first encountered these idiot things in my first overseas trip to London and Paris back in 2010 at many shopping centres and airports.
The stupid goddamn things have a very small slit to put your hands in, where the air is coming rapidly on to your hands in a very tight line / wave of air. The problem is in the design that you put your hands inside this small gap and it's really bloody easy for your palms or back of your hand or your shirt to easily touch the top or bottom of the opening. https://www.thememo.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/dyson-airblade.jpg It's simply too small a space to put your hands. Sure if you're careful you're fine but it reminded me of playing the old electronic board game 'operation' trying to not touch the sides.
I realise Mythbusters seemed to confirm that an air dryer IS worse than paper towel for germs, but I still prefer a combination of both (towel then dryer) but I'd take a regular hand dryer any day over the Dyson, stupid bloody thing.
I'm not sure I agree with your last sentence. We've been able to do a massive amount of things on Android for years. I don't feel like a huge amount has been added.
iOS has some stuff which is frustratingly good, I've used the 3D touch sensor on a 6S, it's fantastic. Android needs this, now. It's brilliant - even more useful on iOS though (because those poor bastards don't have a menu / context button) Charge time and battery life is mind blowingly good on Apple devices, admitedly a hardware thing but man I would like to see this improve on Android, at least the S7 finally went thicker for better battery.
I'm an Android guy who whines about it often, being a fan doesn't mean you think things are infallible. So with that said:
I've been using this OS for over 5 years now, is it even possible at this point to improve the 'backend' core code? The UI continues to be, mildly sluggish in some situations, even on modern hardware. I read an article years ago, that Apple 'cheats' with speed stuff, in clever ways. One example, when you quit an app, it takes a silent screenshot of the app. Next time you re-open that application, it calls the screenshot quickly, while loading the real app from/swap or storage or whatever. By the time you can see the screenshot, process in your brain where you want to click and move your hand there, it's loaded seemlessly behind it. - Clever things like this should be in Android.
On a larger scale, can the issue of updates ever be solved? Unless you buy a stock google device (I don't like them, sorry) then you're utterly boned. Updates need to come from google, then passed to your handset manufacturer, then passed to your carrier and finally you. OFTEN this breaks down and updates are either delayed or simply don't occur. As someone without coding skill, is there *any* way this can be addressed? How can google bypass the handset manufacturer? Can they? It's becoming a worse and worse situation.
I still use an ipad and iphone as my spare, I can't deny - I love that updates for 2,3,4 year old phones still get pushed down the line and despite some claims of performance issues baked in to these updates, personally I'm not seeing them.
I like Android, quite a bit - but man do I wish it were faster. Since I've started using it on a HTC HD2,till now, it's still not quick enough, even with bloat disabled and animations turned off.
I feel like Google is focusing on stupid shit now (emojis) rather than important stuff. The days of clever innovation seem gone.
Star Wars half died for me when Lucas re-released the original 3 all screwed up in the late 90's, it was confirmed dead on the prequels.
I don't give a damn about the franchise and I do say franchise, because they are so transparent with it all. There's no veil of mystery, no universe to be interested in. Star Wars, like all fictional properties is a product. Problem is, with Star Wars, they really don't bother blurring the line at least, it's just outright, in your face BUY ME, BUY ME bullshit.

There's finally been some innovation in the SD / MicroSD arena - with a new standard for cards, they now have backwards compatible, much faster ones, with extra pins.

Nope! It's getting SO bad, I'm really thinking of sticking with 7 as long as humanly possible. Maybe I really will end up a Mac guy after all, or something?
Super unimpressed at this point.
Luckily I have a screenshot of what I'm talking about.
http://chattypics.com/files/5050split_sueprsqg9z.jpg
- Frustrated.
Just because I'm ok with a 2nd level job in my late 30's doesn't mean I'm some kind of failure :/
It's been confiscated? Pretty sure that's not legal, it's called theft.
Reply to my own post:
I've encountered the Reddit thread on this very topic and while MOST people are anti phone use of any kind, the quantity of people endorsing silent texting is incredibly high, I'm effectively being called "old man" for saying it's distracting to have a light on in the cinema.
Considering the average /. age, I'd say we're all fucking doomed, the generation below us needs gassing.
Then have the AC unit gas them.
The problem is in the design that you put your hands inside this small gap and it's really bloody easy for your palms or back of your hand or your shirt to easily touch the top or bottom of the opening.
https://www.thememo.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/dyson-airblade.jpg
It's simply too small a space to put your hands.
It's brilliant - even more useful on iOS though (because those poor bastards don't have a menu / context button)
Charge time and battery life is mind blowingly good on Apple devices, admitedly a hardware thing but man I would like to see this improve on Android, at least the S7 finally went thicker for better battery.
/swap or storage or whatever. By the time you can see the screenshot, process in your brain where you want to click and move your hand there, it's loaded seemlessly behind it. - Clever things like this should be in Android.
I read an article years ago, that Apple 'cheats' with speed stuff, in clever ways. One example, when you quit an app, it takes a silent screenshot of the app. Next time you re-open that application, it calls the screenshot quickly, while loading the real app from
On a larger scale, can the issue of updates ever be solved?
Haven't seen the new one, don't intend to.
I really recommend you go to google images and type in the following 3 words.
ancilla tilia scarlett
You will not be disappointed.
