Theres a fairly good chance that by the time the 80 gig drives come out there won't be any issue making such drives using one platter and the cost difference between the 60 gig and 80 gig drive will be minimal if any. Thus it may nto be any more expensive then the 60 gig models.
Currently the cost of manufacturing a 40 gig 3.5inch drive and 120 gig 3.5inch drive using one platter is almost the same. The ps3 does infact use a 2.5inch drive and i'm not quite so sure how big the platters on such a drive is but i don't think there will be much of a cost increase (if any at all), especially if the 80 gig drive ps3 has no additional features.
In the end a 60 gig ps3 cost $840 usd to create last november and a xbox360 cost $330. It's priced like a mercedes for a reason. It dissipates just as much heat and does it in a far quieter way (larger heatsink with a larger low rpm fan). Everyone who has taken apart seems to like the build quality of it over the xbox360.
There isn't much that separates a ford and a mercedes other then luxury. You can get a fast ford and it can run very reliably as long as it is not abused.
My person reasons for playing the ff series were interesting storyline + great gameplay. While not overly difficult ffx and earlier provided that for me. I like movies and i don't really care if ffx depends on being half that because it was interesting to me and it had sufficient battles that were interesting.
FFXII's story was neither interesting (political but the characters were barely flushed out and it was more event based then anything) nor did the battles resemble anything fun after a while. The license system was simply tedious.
There was an excellent article at next-generation about the cost of building a ps3. The 20 gig version cost about $800 and the 60 gig version with the wireless stuff about $840 (blue ray components are only $125 out of that, the most expensive component being the RSX chip by Nvidia--not 100% sure of the cost but around $165).
Note that this does not include packaging and cables.
In any case, the European numbers are closer to the break even point.
DVD is 480p at best. You'll get about 852x480 resolution. If your watching it from a 26inch sdtv from ten feet away you might not notice a difference but with a 60 inch or larger in the same distance you will notice a different between that resolution and 1920x1080.
Plus a "widescreen" HDTV and a blu-ray/hd-dvd simply translate the lines better. With a DVD you often lose usable picture real estate for dvd's not formatted to your sdtv screen. The 4x3 formatted dvd's lose information on the sides an you lose the original view of the movie.
The reason we are ridiculing her is not because her statement is incorrect. Rather it's because she's singled out man-made chemicals. A dangerous chemical can be man made or natural.
Just make sure that the cashiers check to make sure the people are 17+. Unless it's a video game porn.
No reason to blacklist or place mature (not porn) games like GTA 3 in the porno rooms or in porno wrappers. They should be treated like rated r movies.
Use bittornado, I've used it for over a year and possibly two now. Although my upload cap is higher at 70ish KB/s it's crucial to set an upper bound for us (so as not to completely hamper download capability (at 60 KB/s upload, i can download up to 500 KB/s, at 70 KB/s upload I get under 10 kb/s).
Isn't the music industry as a whole like tenish billion? I remember seeing articles claiming that the game industry was about to overtake the music at around that mark.
1.63 trillion is like 150 times the size of the entire industry. They surely aren't losing that much from ONE website.
They've always had it. They just made the link too difficult to find.
The real news is that they are beta'ing a new version with the random number generator for the CV2 code that many websites ask for. This way even if they have your CC number and your old CV2 card the transaction won't go through since it changes after a purchase. Preventing duplicate purchases or thieves using your number.
I was planning on getting a ps3 for a long time, even after numerous negative reports. I expected the system to be more powerful then the 360 and to have a great deal more software. However almost every high profile developer is makign games for both systems and even those that stated exclusivity have changed their minds (like sega and virtua fighter). If the ps3 doesn't reach a certain amount of sales within 9 months I don't see them being able to have any exclusives anymore.
Maybe it's because Kutaragi has been sucking with developer relations as a month old next-gen article mentioend (companies interested in developing exclusives for the ps3 not being able to get a ahold of kutaragi back when he still was in charge).
The biggest reason the ps3 is a blunder is the cost and relatively weak technology. According to the latest reliable article from next-gen the premium ps3 is estimated to cost $840 to build (the blu-ray components are a measly $125) of that. They took a massive gamble on the cell chip and it doesn't deliver. It's an interesting design for a chip however from all reports it's not any better for GAMES then a triple core 3.2ghz power pc that the 360 has. The cell only has one powerpc core and 7 other spe's which are far from being able to do what a full power pc core can.
The ps2 came about before the xbox and it was smaller had a massive reputation and by then was cheaper then the ps2. Their was a lot of momentum for the ps2 and consumers bought it up and developers delivered numerous exclusives for it. The ps3 is in the original xbox's position now as far as timeline goes and it's not any more powerful then the 360 which costs $330 to produce the premium version versus $840 for the ps3 (Sony is NOT in the best position to take that much of a hit in the long term). Consumers see a $200 dollar price difference which is a big deal.
For this reason and the lack of supply i think we'll see a lot of support for their direct competitor, the 360. Microsoft is throwing money developers, giving them solid and cheap dev tools, and is innovating on the online front.
I'm a cheap broke ass who will wait another 9 months before i buy anything but It's no longer going to be the ps3. If final fantasy or metal gear stop being exclusive I won't even bat an eye to the system. It's just a big mess architechuraly.
We've been getting shipments of everything but the ps3. WE've had tons of 360's ordered hundreds for the holiday and they are selling but we've barely had any ps3's. The ps3's status is worse then the 360's last year. We knew we would be getting at least one shipment a week if not more. Three months after launch we were never out of stock for the 360's. I've not heard a thing about us even getting more ps3s.
Parent's aren't even interested in asking about the ps3's and when they do it's something like. "Well, we also want to get a ps3 but you guys probably don't have it right?"
I don't know who's got in in shelves but they aren't really available here in central ohio.
In the end of the p4 era this would be laughable. Intel jolted up the voltage up so high to reach those clocks it's not even funny how much heat those things produced.
I've had a xp 2100+ overclocked from 1.7ghz to 2.4 ghz running fine for over three years. Build your own system with quality parts and it wont' be an issue. A lot of system makers used to see amd as only a budget box and used cheap components in the past.
THere is no way simple cables can convert analog to digital or vice versa. It's done on the board/graphics card and changing cable changes output from the card/board.
I remember benchmarks for the powervr... In some cases it was competitive but it lackded features like hardware T&L and framerates and benchmark were lower then the radeon/geforce of the time because of it.
Those were the primary reasons i avoided their Kyro line of graphics cards for the pc. The performance was lacking overall when you put hardware lighting into consideration.
THe most recent article on current costs of the blu-ray component is $125 out of the $840 required to build a premium ps3. The reason standalone blu-ray drives are so expensive is because they are pc's that happen to have blu-ray drives included in them (don't believe me? look at the makeup of a current blu-ray drive).
I'll be that in the next three years cost of making the blu-ray will go down from $125 to to $35 and lower (dvd drive components are below $15 dollars).
What's funny is that Sony always makes a profit in their console division other then launch time. It's microsoft thats been bleeding up to and over one billion per year on the xbox division.
I think Sony will do much better then others if you changed average of all games to average of the top 100 or top 50 games per console. That is more representative of what most gamers will experience. As few people buy more then 25 games let alone 50 or 100. Who cares if the psx, ps2, or ps3 has 400 mediocre games as long as they have 100 decent ones.
My playstation was literally flung across the room onto a wall causing the game inside to popout. It was then slammed into the cd that popped out causing it to shatter (first time i've ever seen a CD shatter). The playstation still continued to run all games flawlessly (other then the shattered CD!). It also fell down a flight of carpeted stairs once.
I'm baffled whenever i here of overheating playstations (i've played in carpet for at least a few hundred hours although i try to keep it on some platform) or disc lens going out. I guess a few batches may have had manufacturing defects or people play it in 120 degree temperature on a carpet. Otherwise it's the toughbook of consoles.
It's okay, our ps3 line (Sam's Club in ohio) just started last night on the 16th. It's cold here so i feel sorry for em. There were eight when i left the store and a tent. Actually maybe the line started earlier and I didn't notice.

Ugh, yeah... Sony's creating an artificial scarcity to lower their shipments to be way below demand rather then sell out of 500k or more units at launch. That whole blu-ray component shortage was just a fake excuse. It's a vast conspiracy that includes other blu-ray manufactures. Because selling less units then they can make is good for business.
Theres a fairly good chance that by the time the 80 gig drives come out there won't be any issue making such drives using one platter and the cost difference between the 60 gig and 80 gig drive will be minimal if any. Thus it may nto be any more expensive then the 60 gig models.

Micro-sd is actually smaller then mini-sd's. I'm not sure why we NEEDED an inbetween format but it exists and it's not the same as micro.

I was wrong on the RSX, it costs $129 to build. Only 4 more bucks over the blu-ray components.

Programmers are more easibly able to implement things like AI withoutt taking a performance hit on the 360 according to Ubisoft montreal in this article:

What's worse is that some state the graphics chip in the 360 is just as powerful or more so then Nvidia's RSX for the ps3.
