  1. Only One Console on Linux and the Coming Consoles · · Score: 1

PS3 seems to be the only console with official support (has a flipping alternate os install option in the OS that ships with it). Third party YDL is devoloping a distro for the ps3 release (free to download two weeks after they start selling discs). Also supports USB peripherals. It would be interesting what someoen can do for it using a TV tuner or HDTV tuner. Processing power shouldn't be an issue.

At the very least once can expect a ps3 media center like the xbox.

WII linux seems to have been a rumor and the only distribution in development is by an amateur who is doing it for college. Goodluck defeating the DRM.

  3. Re:What practical things have people done... on Linux and the Coming Consoles · · Score: 1

Err, the ps3 version of media center (if one is created) should be pretty good actually. It functions decently on a xbox which has far less memory and processing power. With the processing power in the cell it should be able to handle high definition video. Also Sony says the ps2 does take usb hard drives so you can get a cheap one going that route.

Hardware wise Sony seems to be pretty lenient on what they will allow compared to past and present consoles by them and everyone else (no more sticking with just their proprietary memory cards). All usb hardware should work with appropriate drivers. Linux will be installable without spending time trying to break the drm or other security features(like you had to do with xbox and every other console) and it will be a professional version by YDL (will be made free download 2 weeks after release).

The only thing the open source community needs to do is make software like the xbox media center. Once the prices begin to fall on the ps3 i think it will be a bigger as far as open source dev goes than an xbox. The power in it should allow for more possiblilities.

  12. 1-2 Games vs. Hundreds on Why Sony Won't Lose The Next-Gen War · · Score: 1

The playstation had already come out and had a very decent library by the time the n64 came out. What was worse is that there was basically one game at launch (super mario 64) and another a month later. While super mario was a nice game that was still a weak launch by any measure.

The psx had many crappy games and no one disputes that. But a lot of it was still quite entertaining. There were a lot of new ideas and games on the psx (console wise). Parappa the Rapper, Crash Bandicoot, 3d racing, and 3d fighting (not completely new but oh well). I actually had fun playing a lot of non AAA title early psx games. They gave this overwhelmingly refreshing feeling. The 3dness of the psx seemed so different then every console before it.

The N64 was only moderately refreshing. 3D was no longer brand new and Super Mario 64 was only moderately appealing. A large number of gamers had gotten older and there was an overwhelming feeling that Nintendo was a kid's console. This has gotten weaker since but the idea still persists for many. Piracy also sold a lot of psx, the mod community was thriving.

Will I miss rumble, will i miss the weight? To a degree yes, I will... However I welcome a lighter and wireless controller as it would help greatly with the tilt. I can imagine tilting the old controller in the air and the tiredness one would feel. I don't think it's an accident that caused it to be so light.

The ps3 is quite appealing to me and i'd love to buy it....(once it reaches the $349 price point on the lower end unit).

I've never seen such a large group of tech oriented folks so much against having new tech. If this helps speed up adoption rates of higher capacity removeable discs then what's the complaint.

Bleeding edge product's prices will fall fastest as with equal time and mass manufacture. In 4 years the ps3 will be more expensive then the wii but you have the hard drive to mostly blame then (components of blu-ray, a much smaller cell chip, along with cheaper video/system ram, will have reduced to near ps2 lvls now--with blu-ray taking a $5-$10 dollar component cost increase at max over dvds).

  16. Hardware Division vs. Software on Games Already Filling Blu-Ray Discs · · Score: 1

It comes down to this from the article:
Partly it's visual, partly it's sound, and partially it'll be down to gameplay benefits as well - more levels, more detail, richer experiences.

Having better hardware does not necessarily make the games less innovative. I don't see why people seem to think it's mutually exclusive. I see few drawbacks to more powerful hardware in the longterm that will come down in price fast (the newer the tech, the more expensive it is but the faster the prices will come down).

Believe it or not there are people who like cinematic rpgs and like to look a luscious graphics while playing them. Your console can both appeal to these people and those who have virtually no powerful cinematics and still be an awesome game through gameplay (gta), katamari damacy. Or better yet a mixture of both like God of War.
