  1. Ask Slashdot Dupe? on Obtaining Mainframe Experience w/o a Mainframe? · · Score: 1

Didn't we already have this discussion awhile back?

  2. I'm a Creationist poet. on Darwinian Poetry: From Bad to Verse · · Score: 3, Funny

There's no way 'evolution' can form a poem, from the looks of it.

  3. Re:Hotel copies of the Bible on Digitized Gutenberg Bible Available · · Score: 1

From what I've heard, they are actually free for the taking. They are provided by the Gideons Internation (www.gideons.org). They go to hotels to place Bibles. If there's one that's been taken, they place another one.

  4. Re:GTK on QT 3.2 Released · · Score: 1

I guess it would depend on your definition of "free". GTK is under the LGPL, while QT is under the "GPL unless you pay us" license. I kind of like GTK better because it is a community-controlled project, unlike QT which even though it is gpl'd is still a commercial product in which Troll Tech decides its fate.

  5. Well... on A Search Engine For The Slower Net · · Score: 1

I saved the html for google and it was 3405 bytes. If my math is correct that would be about 92 seconds on a 300bps connection. It will probably only be useful if you have a really slow connection.

  6. At first on "Splatometer" Allows Distributed Bug Reports · · Score: 1

I thought we were talking about bug reports, as in, those flaws in computer programs?!

  7. Where's the sources? on Mozilla 1.4 Released · · Score: 1

I know that you can get them through cvs, but if there is no tarball with the sources then an ebuild for Gentoo can't be made with all the mirror sites having the tarball.

  8. Unauthorized copying is like... on EFF Ad Campaign On File Swapping · · Score: 2, Insightful

Making an arcade machine give you free games. After all, you didn't take anything tangible away from the owners.

  9. I'm a born-again Christian on Christian Videogame Alternatives Explored · · Score: 1

And this is some corny shit. Back to Quake3.

  10. No lower prices on GIF Patent Prepares to Expire · · Score: 4, Informative

I don't think you'll be getting lower prices on software products because there is no longer a patent on LZW. I believe it's like $5000 to get a license for a single product. A pretty hefty fee, but that means nothing to someone like Adobe.

  11. Re:I DID IT! on Moore Dissects State Of The Xbox · · Score: -1, Offtopic

    I knew I shouldn't have browsed at -1.

  12. Re:This is totally incorrect on The Return Of Shareware Games · · Score: 0, Troll

Oh!!!! A dead parrot fell on my keyboard! Mod me up!

  13. di.fm on What Jazz Records Would You Reccommend? · · Score: 1

Digitally Imported, known mostly for it's dance music stations, now has a modern jazz station.

  14. I actually own this book on QBASIC Programming for Dummies · · Score: 0

I bought it back in '94 when I was like 10 or so, and I have to say that the book has got to be the lamest book in existence. I have never heard of a man so obsessed with foreign currencies in my life. I guess he bought Writing for Dummies. Oh well, at least he actually teaches something, unlike Dan Gookin, and you would have to have read his pathetic attempt to teach C in order to know what I'm talking about...

And the reviewer is wrong about the humor. He has no humor.

  15. Larry the Cow from Gentoo says... on AMD's Next Generation Processor Technology · · Score: 2, Funny

...now it'll only take half a day!!!

    Disclaimer: I use Gentoo

  16. Cult? on Profile of a Hard-Core Gamer · · Score: 1

I wonder if it's possible to establish a cult with an MMORPG? According to factnet.org, pretty much _everything_ could be a cult.

  17. Microwaved CDs!!! on Ideas for High School Computer Club Activities? · · Score: 1

Teach them how to make a cdr spark up! Just throw a cdr in the microwave for 3 seconds. Don't do it for five or you'll be smelling some awful fumes!

  18. DJGPP for DOS on The Little Coder's Predicament · · Score: 1

If the lil' coder has an older machine, you can get him DJGPP for DOS. You can get Allegro for it, which is pretty much like SDL is like for Linux, and is pretty easy to use and you can do a lot of cool things with it.

  19. Re:Whoopee... on Jabber Gathers Steam In Australia · · Score: 2, Interesting

There's also Exodus on Windows, too. I hate the fact that there isn't a Gabber2 yet... Julian please hurry...

  20. Re:Jabber and IRC on Jabber Gathers Steam In Australia · · Score: 1

I believe you can add people to your roster who use different servers, if that's what you're talking about.

  21. Oh no, I feel a trend coming... on Gran Turismo 4 Preview · · Score: -1, Flamebait

Now that someone has a Japanese username, everyone's gonna start doing it because they think:

"Oh cool its JAPANESE!!!! I must have JAPANESE username too!!!"

  22. Re:remember folks on Bruce Sterling On Total Information Awareness · · Score: 2, Funny

I'm not eating any of the deer you've "cooked."

  23. They're just reminding us it's there on The Unix-Haters Handbook Online · · Score: 1

They must think it's really cool, since they posted it twice and all.

  24. Re:hacker's diet works on Lose Weight The Slow, Boring Way · · Score: 1

5BX? I just hop around (with a strobe light turned on) while listening to di.fm's hardcore station :)

  25. They can't hear it for themselves on Matrix Reloaded Trailer Released · · Score: 1

Unfortunately, no Linux user can hear what the Matrix is. You have to switch to Windows to hear it for yourself.
