  1. Re:Nintendo..xbox killer? on GameCube Production to Halt · · Score: 5, Informative

I did see the numbers saying Gamecube was maybe 5-10% ahead of Xbox worldwide but I can't seem to find them. I found this though

    http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/54/31836.html

..the overall sales figures (which, interestingly, put Cube and Xbox almost neck and neck on a global level, with around 9.5 million units each - so why are so many US-based analysts desperate to write off the Cube?)

Which means I can't say the Gamecube is outselling Xbox but neither is the reverse true. Surprised?

  2. I'd love to know more on Disposable Digital Cameras Have Arrived · · Score: 1

It sounds fantastic. I've used disposable cameras a couple of times and they are definitely a handy thing to be able to buy. And now you can delete bad shots and get a photo CD? This is why I love living in the 21st century.

Anyone know who actually makes these, what hardware they run on, etc.? How hard would it be to hack it, maybe take out the chip and dump your pics without ever hitting the 25 photo nuke point?

Anyway, hackable or not, I would definitely choose one of these over a normal disposable camera if I needed one

  3. Motivation on How Do You Get Work Done? · · Score: 1

Motivation and desire. You have to want to do this work more than you want to do all those other things- TV, web, snacking, whatever, because otherwise the work can't beat them.

This is a basic psychological thing and we all go through it; it's one thing for your outer lobes to realise that the work is important but it's another thing to make your brain stem choose the unpleasant and boring thing over the fun and interesting thing.

I don't think locking yourself away from all distractions is the answer either, because you can still daydream. I think you just need to try to find ways to make the work more interesting and stimulating.

I've had projects where I've worked until 6AM, gone to bed and tried to sleep but after 10 minutes just got up again and went back to my workstation because all I wanted to do was work on this project. That's how to beat the distractions.

    That changed.

I'm not sure what your point might have been, but everything you said about this society, whether "magically" or not, certainly did change, and you know that as well as I do. I don't believe you're trolling anymore, but I'm really not sure what you are trying to say..?

So... can I give them money then or do I just download it? Where is their ROI? Despite what many Slashdotters seem to think on these threads you can't make a (good) album just by clicking a mouse over some menus a couple of times, it does take time, skill and talent. Just like coding, even with point-and-clicky IDEs.

So maybe they don't want to make any money but I can just see a whole bunch of people using this as a precedent to force all musicians to give their work away for free.

Put it this way, if they choose to do it, that's great, but if they do it for a full-time job they are not earning money for as long as it takes to the record. Who pays the bills during that time?

This is exactly how software works, I don't see why it should be different for music.

Again, great that we can get this album for free, but that doesn't mean *every* album *must* be free as well.

  16. replace the shuttle with..? on The Space Shuttle Program: What Next? · · Score: 5, Interesting

I remember what a big deal it was when the first shuttle launched and landed >20 years ago. I think the thing about it was that a) it was something new and exciting --the future, today! and b) because people realised how valuable a reusable spacecraft could be.

I don't know if the reusability factor of each shuttle ever balanced what it cost to launch each one but I guess it must have helped. and cost wasn't the only benefit anyway, it's just a smarter way of doing it if you bring the spaceship back home with you instead of dumping it on the moon.

Anything which comes after the shuttle would surely have to be reusable, be able to land like a plane and be able to carry cargo. That's basically what a shuttle is, so I think we might see a shuttle 2.0 with just some different approaches to the same problems.

A millenium falcon style design would be pretty cool though...

Yeah, but a Jet-car would still be a car, wouldn't it? And then what would a cross between a car and a jet car be? A car. A jet ski is a water motorycle with a different propulsion system. It makes it a different beast, but also, it doesn't.

The amphibious vehicles I'm talking about were usually made out of fibreglass, sometimes plastic and were big in the 80s. They used to be on TV all the time on those 'future tech' shows like 'Beyond 2000' and 'Towards 2000', which, looking at my calendar, probably aren't shown anymore.

...a cross between a motorcycle and a jet ski
wtf? A jet ski is a motorcycle, only you ride it on water. That's like saying a cross between a TV and a computer monitor.

Anyway, to the topic, this thing seems to have been made by a (small?) team of geeks and is obviously being paid for with private money (they mention that they are trying to raise £250,000 for the project, which for Yamaha or Honda is peanuts, but for a couple of engineers and designers is not so easy to find.) That makes it interesting and I certainly hope it gets to market and it gets the same kind of distribution that jet skis get.

I have my doubts though, because we've seen tons of unique and amazing fun/recreational vehicles over the years, especially amphibious ones, which we never heard of again. They'll be on some TV technology show and then that's the last time you'll see them. Shame, really, I guess a niche market and an expensive product is an extremely tough sell unless you can really afford serious marketing behind you. But I hope they can do it.
Oh, the vehicle itself? I don't like it. Amphibious is cool and all, but being in an enclosed cell while jumping waves at 50mph? I just hope it's watertight for when I flip it. I would rather have a jet ski and a beach buggy- different toys for different games, but that's just me.

Kind of like Krusty the Clown.

What I do know is that this company works together with Siemens and they make some of the most kickass home appliances I've ever seen...
