This is happening slowly, but SURELY. In 2010 Slashdot will have articles such as "ChildTracker-2000(TM) is now a mandatory installation at all Hospitals in the United States(C). All newborns will be protected with a tiny chip installed under their skin in the palm of their hand."
Seriously, what's to say, after EVERYTHING is tagged, that the masses could not also be tagged themselves? The Government tells women what they can and can't do with their own bodies all the time (abortion). Extend that control to men's bodies as well, and add human-chip implants.
...you had a VERY good point on the gaming example.
I would enjoy a "safe-spot" in my PC for things to run clean and safe and where computers can identify me when I want them to (Citibank, EA game servers, etc). But what will happen with this control VERY quickly will be bad enough to negate any and all good aspects.
>Believe it or not, such abusive "features" are unpopular and cause companies that employ them to lose market share.
True... EXCEPT for Microsoft. That's the threat. That's the worry. That is what will - despite my passion for free computing, free information, etc - turn every computer into an X-Box type device in 5-10 years. Don't envy X-Box users. When ALL computing is done on a closed PC, where opening the box will get us arrested, we'll remember the days back on Slashdot when all this was nothing more than wild paranoia.
I remember only a few years ago people joking around about being arrested for swapping songs. "Never gonna happen." was the general response.
In regards to supporting Palladium: Keep in mind that this is just one more feature we offer
No, it's not. On paper, it appears to be a feature. Get a BIOS pre-palladium. List features and count. For exmaple, lets say 110 "features". Now add palladium to that same chip. We now count 111 features. Again, on paper it looks good. But in the real world, where we live and where the chip will run, it's bullshit.
That 1 "feature" will reduce a very important part of my computing usage. "Freedom" and "choice" and "control" el. at. It's a net-negative. You added 1 "feature" on paper but reduced my "LIBERTY" as the user.
If Ford were to advertise "New Options! All cars CAN have a STEARING WHEEL and an ENGINE if you like!" they would be shut down. But in the digital world, AMI et. al. calls this type of selling a "feature". No thank you.
It will only matter if it is the real, pure, clean and true JRE from Sun that is running. If Microsoft gets to put there own M$-Java in the install, it will make things much worse.
They work on KHTML and return all the fixes and work they put into it. When was the last time MS did something like that?
Apple simply and obviously DOES NOT WANT to have something the RIAA/MPAA/et.al. can piss on. It's being carefull. I say GREAT for Apple. I also think the project is great, but Apple is simpley covering it's tracks for the suit it will surely have one day by the RIAA/MPAA etc.
"Look, Ms. Rosen (you stupid c*nt) we DID try to stop all the file-sharing derivitaive works out there! We were aggressive in stoping piracy. Our iTunes v4 and iPod 80gig w/Rendezvous & Bluetooth STREAM files, they do not allow DOWNLOADING."
Thinking back to a Discovery channel show on the CIA, they dispose of hard drives with a good data wipe then they drill holes in them. Drives that held Super Top-Secret stuff (MS source code?) also got burned in a furnace. All of this on-site.
In regards to Wiping data, do yourself a favor and check out http://www.heidi.ie/eraser/
Beyond the wonderfull wiping the program does, there is the option to make an emergency boot floppy that wipes the HD with DOD style 7-pass or a GutherSomething 36 pass! Niffty for the paranoid.
There was a lot of phone tag and run-around involved, and I eventually came to the conclusion that most people at the FAA were pretty clueless about unmanned free balloons.
Yeah, the same goes for Blimps, Cessna's, 767's, Jumbo Jets... clueless on all counts.
Anyone out there who has had to deal with the FAA (private pilots, etc) will know what I'm talking about.
Costs five times as much for the bar, plus $350 for every drinker. Default.WET Bar only works with 2 bottles. 8, 16, and 32 bottle versions cost more. And they only work with MS-Bottle shaped libations.
Sun has a "The Bot in Bottle" version that works great with 64 bottles. HP keeps saying their version works faster, but only because their machine doesn't pour full 1oz shots.
Apple has the most gourgous looking Bar available. It glows in the dark and floats around the room on magnets. But it only pours Apple Martini's and still doesn't run Quark.
...without any monkey-boy dancing on stage. I've never been blown away (easy there, wise-guy) before by a presentation like the one Apple just had. The 17 inch PowerBook is my next computer. And my desktop and laptop will appear on www.ebay.com very soon. Such an amazing computer running BSD (right?) at the core, with software that just works, and most importantly to me, a great GUI with respect for design huristics and usability.
Oh, my spalling does suck, but nevermind about that:)
The keyboard design is brilliant (there's a pun there, I think). The only thing missing is a little camera somewhere to enable Video Conferencing (which I use a lot with all my friends and some of my clients). But no complaints.
I probrably don't have anything smart to say right now... too busy drooling after having watched the entire live stream of the keynote. But if anyone wants to throw links to great places new Mac ownsers can go to (such as http://fink.sourceforge.net/ ) I'd LOVE to see your thoughts, links, suggestions, etc.
Just wanted to say "Kudos" to you! I've done the same with my family. Once at a time, getting IE out of the box is nice. Once person at a time using open source to browse the web. Sweet!
Wow... you got me drooooolin. And you didn't even mention pr0n.
Serioudly, imagine two 80gb drives in an iPod. RAID in an iPod. A portable, battery powered mini raid box! If the data was stored with Blowfish or some other encryption, it would be a data-backup dream, along with being the best MP3 player available IMHO.

No... kinda like X-Box.

Melted off of what? Your keyboard?

Moving a 150 pound refrigerator from the computer room and back into the kitchen from where it came does NOT constitute weight loss.
The minute Palladium is up and running on these boxes, watch for manufacturers to go "WinModem" only: meaning BIOS's that only boot Windoze.
Want to boot FreeBSD, so you played around with the BIOS? DMCA days "Go Directly To Jail, Do Not Pass SourceForge, Do Not Collect $200"

Whewww! *relief*
Happy new year.
I guess two out of three ain't bad. Wish I could just get some sleep then...
Actually, it's quiet, performance, or RMA.
