  1. Doubt he's correct, but believe him anyway! on Handmade vs. Commercially Produced Ethernet Cables · · Score: 4, Insightful

Wait a minute. Your boss is telling you to buy cables instead of toiling to make your own, and you're _complaining_? I don't think a self-terminated link of CAT6 will have the slightest trouble maintaining 20 megabits, but that's not the point.

Word of advice, take his word for him and nod. If he's willing to spend money to make your job easier, then keep that job!

  2. Ask your users! on Morality of Throttling a Local ISP? · · Score: 1

You've only got 400 users? Put it to a vote. Explain your company's predicament, and then send them each an email asking if they'd prefer to either:

    A) Pay more for an increase in upstream bandwidth

    or

    B) Accept throttling based on service and content

Personally, I don't have a problem with QoS-based filtering. For example, give torrents a lower priority so they'll wait in line behind real-time apps like voice or even web browsing

A little transparency in your decision-making process will gain you a lot of respect with your customers, and make them feel like they are part of both the problem and solution

Now, my own personal experience with the PST importer, after having used it for several individuals, is that it works very well. It takes a while to import someone's 800 megabyte PST file over a T1 connection, but that's hardly worth complaining about.

As for the missing features that one would get with MS Exchange, there are a few. Most notably is Task support, which from what I understand is coming very soon.

From the tone of your posts, mister AC, I would guess that your bad experience is due to some combination of lack of ability to read the documentation, general incompetence, or some expectation that everything must be spoonfed to you. In your case, it's easier to make assumptions and rants than to sucesfully plan a migration from one product to a superior one.

  15. Re:What about the power supplies... on IEEE Seeks For Ethernet To 'Go Green' · · Score: 3, Interesting

Exactly. All the hundreds of devices independently converting AC voltage to DC all day long is far more power waste than what's inside the CAT5. Speaking of, whatever happened to the push for DC datacenters? As far as I can tell, there's still no widely-used DC standard as an option for most of the devices in a small-medium sized environment

  16. Measurable? on IEEE Seeks For Ethernet To 'Go Green' · · Score: 2, Insightful

Does that much current actually go over ethernet transmissions? It seems to be that more power could be saved by more efficient power supplies in the switches than by wasting a lot of time and research in figuring a way to throttle link speeds. Does anybody have a value for the amount of electricity used for an hour's worth of data at 10 megabits as opposed to 1 gigabit?

It just surprises me that +/-5 volts over copper really makes all that much difference compared to all the other waste in the datacenter.

Also, what's the difference in energy usage for copper vs fiber links??
