Dell might be planning on offering this as a Precision model with some kind of Quadro card in the dock.

To clarify, 3G is a specification for wireless data speeds, EVDO, EDGE, UMTS, and HSDPA are all 3G. I think technically 1xRTT is 3G but it is at the lowest end that some people call it 2.5G. EVDO, UMTS, HSDPA, and 1xRTT are based on a form of CDMA, UMTS and HSDPA of course using SIMs just like GSM/GPRS/EDGE.

  11. Dell Ximage on Creating XP Disk Images w/ Company Applications? · · Score: 1

If you use Dell computers, ask your Dell rep about the "Dell Ximage". It starts with you proving them a hard drive of a completely set up machine. Then they remove all of the drivers and put a custom front end on it. They give you a dvd that you can boot that ghosts the image to an HD. When it boots up, the Ximage loader determines what model Dell computer you have and installs all the correct drivers. The install stage takes about an hour. If it doesn't detect your model such as a non-dell computer it dumps you back to the enter your serial number screen. Other than that, it is automated.

We do quarterly updates with it and also Dell pre-loads it on all our new computers, when they boot up, it takes you to the network setup wizard where you name the computer, set the time zone and join it to your domain.

What I do to save time is after a computer is done, I take it off the domain, and set up the RunOnce key in HKLM to launch newsid.exe (from sysinternals). Then I make a ghost image of each model computer we use. When it boots up and you log in as the admin it prompts you to rename the computer. Then you manually join it ot the domain.

I've not dealt with that many IBM's but with Dell, if you can provide proof of ownership, Dell will issue you a one time master unlock password that will let you in even a locked laptop. My comments on the whole issue is that laptop hard drives are more failure prone than PC drives simply because people bump them around and such. Make sure to educate your users on what the sound of a failing HD sounds like so they can get the laptop to the IT department ASAP so the data can be Ghosted (or similar product) to another drive.

I've been to areas that are covered and the experience seems much snappier (less latency) than the Verizon EV-DO cards that we have as well, though it seems the Verizon cards have better coverage (or maybe I'm just saying that because we can get an EVDO connection in our office where as we can't get an HSDPA or UMTS connection here).

The feel is that there isn't a very big latency, but considering that online gaming is a different animal, it may be much higher.
