Of course not! We can do this and go to Mars! And tax cuts for everyone! And $100 billion more for Ophelia! And $100 billion for each of the next six hurricanes! And $300 billion to invade Iran! Who cares about budget deficits and trillion-dollar national debts?!

I've worked with left-handed people who have switched their mouse buttons. For me, it's very awkward trying to use their mouse, but it seems to work for them. Just because you don't use it doesn't mean there aren't people who do.
Proof of Purchase from the pirates--when you provide that proof, Microsoft will give you a legit copy at a discount as a way of saying thank you for telling them where to send the cops.
It's entirely possible that, because OS X is based on UNIX, that there won't be as many successful viruses for the Mac. And for the ones that do get through, Apple is good enough at software design that they will probably provide users with a big red button marked "click this to get rid of viruses" and it will actually work. No more switching needed.
I've heard countless times (especially when I worked there a long time ago) sales reps make disparaging remarks about Apple Macs, and one of the standard comments is "An Apple Mac? What a joke. It only comes with a one button mouse! How lame." And thus the Joe Average first-time computer buyer buys an eMachines or a Compaq without ever thinking about a Mac again.
And chances are they will continue doing that even if Apple starts producing a two-button mouse. Seems like that's the way it's always been at stores that sell both Macs and PCs.
Probably not, unless you're a psychic and can know when the bottom's going to drop out of the market. If you're going to live in a place for a long time, you may not care about large short-term drops in value. But no matter what, don't overspend on a house or condo.
Even if you have a brand new fixed mortgage, you're not building equity that quickly, so if housing values drop significantly, you may still be sunk, no matter what kind of mortgage you have. With my last condo, after owning it for 10 years, I had only built up about $10K of equity on top of the 10% down payment I made when I bought it (100K condo). The appreciation in value, fortunately, was about 60K over the same 10 year period.
That's where you make or lose your money on real estate (for better or worse)--the change in the value of the property.
If you can trust the computer to find a file, why not let the computer organize the files for you? Either the computer can look at the content of the file (or you can tell the computer about the content somehow), then the computer will put it in a folder or organize files in some other way you don't even need to know about.
This assumes the operating system software is good enough that we can trust the computer to organize everything for us and still find whatever file we ask for.
In theory, this would be an opportunity for the little guys to challange some of the ridiculous patents that are out there.
In reality, the big guys like Microsoft have the resources to challenge any patent out there, justified or not, and to defend themselves against any challenge (justified or not). The little guys will usually not have enough resources (read $$$$$$) to challenge or defend successfully.
Note that the URL is acme.com. There could be a few million coyotes trying to order Acme high-performance rocket shoes so they can catch the road runner....
I guess I'm assuming that some WinTel PC manufacturers have some kind of quality control so that you don't have to go through all of those checks. Also, in my experience, I haven't had a lot of trouble finding quality RAM and hard drives for my PowerMac--I was even able to get everything at Best Buy.
I don't think crappy hardware is a good enough reason to switch platforms, and buy new software (while iLife is free with new macs, Photoshop and Microsoft Office are not)--it shouldn't be that hard to fix the hardware that he has.
Now the software (Windows specifically) is a whole another story--I became a hard core Mac user in 1997 for different reasons (buggy Microsoft software rather than security issues)--but he spent all his time griping about hardware instead
Various office programs working together predates MS-Office,
Can you give a source/example for this one?
Lotus Symphony for DOS in the mid 80s
Lotus Jazz for the Mac around the same time
Some old geezer here can probably come up with some mainframe applications that did something similar
Microsoft had Word and Multiplan fairly early on, but it took them a while to roll Word, Excel, and PowerPoint together into Office

...the interviewer asked "What's the significance of having a female pilot for the Return to Flight"?
Collins gave the reporter a half-condesending look and said "There is no significance".
Finally, we have reached a point where no one gives a shit about equality of the sexes questions.
Not quite. We'll reach that point when reporters don't ask questions like the above in the first place.

1. Microsoft employees head to beach at Golden Gardens park in Seattle and reserve fire pit.
2. Employees dump 20-30 copies of Red Hat Linux in fire pit.
3. Employees pour lighter fluid on pile of Linux copies.
4. Microsoft employees set copies of Linux on fire.
5. Voila! Microsoft is now warming up to Linux.

On the one hand, this kind of thing shouldn't happen in a civilized society.
On the other hand, I'm having a hard time resisting the urge to make a crack about how the repeated blows to the head came from an enlarged penis.
Sounds like someone has a case of the Mondays.
(even though it's Thursday).

It's going to be a brand new experiment in video distribution......
It's a suppository.

In source code, probably not.
In Slashdot, sure, no problem!

mmmmmmmmm, pi.
...and according to Cringely it's a sound business practice to do big crazy things because you hate a company.
I'd follow this up with some fun speculation on what Cringely/Dvorak/etc. are smoking/ingesting. Crack? Old shoes? Used gym socks?
The next three seasons of Family Guy will consist entirely of Peter Griffin wrestling with that giant chicken.
that is, if the search function is really good?

I should try that with my senator sometime. She would probably like a bigger penis, too.
