...I'm not willing to destroy the environment for a cure. If people (and corporations) showed any kind of restraint or sense of proportion in the way they made use of what the world has to offer we wouldn't have to discuss this kind of thing.
Okay, so all the stupid admins are making life difficult for developers.
Here's an amazing twist: all the stupid DEVELOPERS are making life difficult for the administrators.
Jeebus people! To pigeon-hole all administrators as ignorant bufoons whose only job is to place roadblocks in front of these poor, superior developers is the height of I.T. dumbness.
Stop being brain-bigots. Ignorance is not welcome anywhere in the chain of development of implementation. Stop whining ya bastards because as an administrator I'm tired of trying to implement unusuable, unintuitive, and downright crappy software from ignorant developers.
Although I don't have the skill or patience for the same task I understand the goal. I've spent many a round of Day of Defeat with nothing but my shovel at hand to dispatch the enemy, or just the pistol. There's something special about foregoing all the typical "power up" type weapons and items and just breaking it down with the bare essentials.
Great. Why don't we all just rattle off endless lists of stupid complaints without any sort of responsibility for whether or not what we're complaining about can even be fixed/changed/adjusted. I'm so tired of the people out there who are apologists for every damn netizen with an axe to grind. His argument does not hold water but is simply based on whines about what he finds boring and his hate for Koster.
This bears less a resemblance to "an independent post mortem" and more of one to the rants on the SWG boards. It's stated with less venom but for example he refers to the "viciously boring" character advancement method. As opposed to???? Yes it can be absolutely boring but generally only if you are a power gamer, someone who demands instant advancement with as little work as possible. No, I would NOT enjoy spending an hour grinding out couplers and grips: so I don't! This is basically an attack on Koster and as such it is not worth deep analysis.
This article (along with the player commentary) is several years old and has been floating around from place to place on the net. Interesting stuff but not exactly news anymore.
I've worked in mixed platform environments for quite some time. My current workplace is about 85% mac, most of which are OS X desktops. The network OS is Win2k. Everybody gets along just fine, network shares behave reasonably and sharing files is fine between users since we make sure to have equivalent versions of desktop apps.
This is exactly the kind of crap that has filled up the SWG forums: a small number of extremely vocal idiots who pretend that SWG is the only MMORPG that has ever experienced these problems. They are constantly making Bold Pronouncements of DOOM and drooling over the Next Big Thing which of course will not meet their stupidly high standards.
The Japanese only manage to squeeze out two or three good games a year. The rest are absolute crap that are usually clones of the crap that managed to eke out some success.
Anyone that says this is just Everquest in space has probably never played either of these games. Of course NO game will have universal appeal but as a long time player of EQ AND AO and now SWG I can tell you quite simply: this is not EQ. If you want to be a part of the Star Wars world you will love this game. If you want to craft you will love this game. If you want to explore you will love the graphics but hunger for deeper content.
People who toss of those dismissals are just an annoyance.
Anyone who actually took the time to read the SWG forums before they were switched over saw plenty of both Pro AND con posts from beta testers. There was no overwhelming consensus on either side and all comments were generally well thought out. Of COURSE the boards were not taken offline to avoid the criticism being spread. They were being switched over to a new system that was read only for non-subscribers. That's all, end of story, no conspiracy. It was well publicized in the forums prior to the switchover. I for one found the beta testers comments to be very encouraging. I don't care about PvP, don't care about being UBER and power-leveling so it looks like this is the game for me. Like anything it will not appeal to all people: how could it? But as usual one must sort through all the misinformation and stupid comments posted by ignorant boobs with no actual interest inthe subject.:P
He has zero zip no chance of pulling this off. None. Apple will simply not let this happen and no amount of second-guessing will prevent it. They have a history of easily squashing people who they thought were treading on their patents, copyrights and good name. Some guy making home-built Macs may be a tiny drop in the bucket but now that it's out in the open he's all done.
This story was posted by someone who doesn't have a clue about Apple products. The 15" flat panel iMac AND the 17" flat panel iMac are still in production. All that's happened is that Apple has switched suppliers. If a story is wrong it should be yanked.
The new president at my workplace is very fond of a particular phrase. When he asks about implementing something and someone starts talking about the steps involved he always cuts them off and says "It's not HOW you'll do it, it's WHO'S going to do it!" and then he smiles and expects you to bask in the glow of his catch-phrase wisdom. He's used it three times with me already and since I'm a department of one I already know (as does he) WHO'S going to do it: ME! But he doesn't let that stop him from saying it.
Bear in mind that some employee complaints about the boss are legit. People who automatically reclassifly any employee complaint about the boss as a "whine" will burn in Hell.
It seems that no matter what tech issue is in contention it is argued the same way. 1.If you are for something new you are the future and everyone better follow your lead since you are obviously a computing genius. ANY consideration other than newness is irrelevant. 2.If you are against something new you are a Luddite idiot who probably never knew anything about computing in the first place and probably still bitch that your 78s won't play on your DVD player.
It makes for some very boring reading with a few nuggets from people (both pro and con) that try and bring relevant material to bear on the discussion. I get tired of trying to defend a viewpoint to people that are not interested in constructing a rational argument. They violate pretty much every rule of logic ever conceived in their quest to be first/loudest/rightest.
My company had about eight domains registered through Verisign and were subjected to a few of Verisigns fraudulent business practices as well as their hideous, hideous service. If they get punished for ANYTHING that will give me a little satisfaction. It's kind of a rarity for companies to be held responsible for being arrogant f-ups. Let's hope this gets carried through and they get the spanking they deserve.
Have you ever tried printing out more than a handful of pages? Particularly when most printers do not support duplex? Having a printer available in no way replaces actual bound text. Try printing out, say, the manual for your next piece of software so you can have it "handy."
Anyone who has tried to read a book on a computer monitor (or a PDA for that matter) quickly discovered the shortcomings, and there are many. How many people find that their usual position for comfortable computing is the same as the one for comfortable reading? How many people prefer the manuals for their software to be in PDF only? Going paperless is admirable in applications where electronic is superior to paper and idiotic when it is inferior.
Great way to start the morning

I'm not a big enough geek to ever do something like this but I am a big enough one to have laughed my ass off during most of that story. I think the best, most telling line is: "Still later in the day we decided to stream MP3's from one car to another."
It's so casual but when you stop to think about it... d'oh!
I am a big fan of creative people, no matter what industry or field and this is a perfect example of creativity in the geek world.

There was a playable version of "Daikatana"?

What be these "patches" you speak of?

Even my cyncial mind is having trouble grasping the immense absurdity of the problem with these machines.
