  4. Different Playing styles on Ask CCP About EVE Online · · Score: 1

Eve is a multi aspected game, currently with room for both of the main types of players - those who primarily play 'Player v. Empire', (and seek to avoid Player v Player combat) and the players who seek 'Player v Player' ie. direct, unconsential PvP combat with others. As a general rule, the first group tend to remain with Empire space, while the second tend to head out to lawless 0.0 security space as soon as possible.

Could you please tell us the number ratios of the two groups please (ideally the numbers of players who have destroyed another players ship in the last week, compared to those who have not), and also what plans you may have to encourage the 'PvE-ers' to enter 0.0 space?

Also, do you accept that despite CCP's best efforts, there will always be a considerable number of Eve players who have no interest whatsoever in direct PvP combat?

  5. I play Eve-online on Should MMOG 'Play' Be Confined? · · Score: 4, Interesting

...and I've been following the thread on the Eve-online forum avidly.

I've played Eve-online for over a year now, and as stated it is indeed the most brutal, darwinistic multi player game on the net that I know of; utterly unforgiving of mistakes and weakness ... which is why I like it; only the strong survive, and the 'weaker' (ie less dedicated/less interested or no interest in unconsentual PvP combat) are quickly winnowed out, or forced to remain within 'Empire space' bascially a sandbox which while a little safer is by no means 100% safe.

In a way, I'm glad the accusations have come to light - firstly, it took repeated forum spamming by 'Goon fleet' (an alliance/guild within the Eve universe) before the Devs within CCP (owners of Eve-online) finally made a statement regarding the issues; I gather the impression that had they had not repeatedly spammed the forums, the current investigation that is being carried out would not have been initiated.

Secondly, there have indeed been several instances as of late where certain players have known of information that could only have come from CCP employees.

The biggest issue at the end of the day is that CCP employees are also allowed to actually play the game itself, and as players are expected to give their loyalty to their corp/alliance, while simultaneously remaining true to CCP's doctrine and not give out any internal information that would aid player alliances/corps.

And that in a nutshell is what started this current uproar. The players are stating that each and every time a CCP employee logs on as a player, he or she has a clear conflict of loyalties, and they are asking for clarification from CCP regarding this.

In my opinion, the vast majority of CCP employees who play the Eve online game are honest and genuine. However, it only takes on single misguided Dev to leak information, and much is ruined, which seems to be the case here.

Having read Kugutsumen's blog, I cannot of course say that it is genuine. I can however say it is believable.

Hopefully in the future CCP Developers will no longer be allowed to maintain positions within PvP alliances, and the clear conflict of interest will be avoided; as to if that will actually happen however, remains to be seen.

The good thing about Creative Loafing is that a *huge* amount of people read it, and even better, these are the 'non geek' mainstream people who would *never* visit wired.com, or any other IT based news source.

99% of articles I've seen on the internet and in paper form are articles that are already 'preaching to the converted' - people who already know of the dangers of 'Trusted Computing'. This article in Creative Loafing will hit a huge mom and pop crowd, and hopefully the word will begin to spread about how evil DRM et all can be - and then hopefully, when Trusted Computing arrives (and it *will* arrive) these people will hopefully know better than to buy such crippled, enslaved hardware.

While it is true that American laws have no power in Palestine, American laws do indeed have power in the good old US of A.

So, the RIAA will simply take one look at Earth Station 5, see that they cannot touch them, and therefore go for the next available target... ...and that target will be the ISPs of America.

How long before the RIAA makes a petition to a judge, then Congress to insure that American internet users will not even be able to reach the website of Earth Station 5? In my opinion, not very long at all.

And in doing so (provided that they achieve the aim) they will then have started a huge avalanche of lawsuits against the ISPs, forcing ISPs to block access to certain 'undesireable' sites on the internet.

What is the next step with this technology? It offends me that a government official can soon be able to drive up outside my house, and literally look inside it, to see how many people are in my house, what kinds of material possesions I have, etc etc.

Saying that, however, I do not think this is going to catch on in airports, especially in the USA :)

Face it, more than 70% of American middle aged women are going to walk though, just to have the official ask her 'Please could you lift up your sagging stomach fat, so we can see if you have a huge bomb hidden under the rolls of fat'.

Hence, the BBC does not have to pander to richer segments of the viewers - they have already been paid after all, via the licence fees.

The BBC does not have to worry about richer (or poorer) viewers, and can just give the news as they see it - they do not have to worry about special interests from advertising, since they are not allowed to advertise.
