  1. Counter Materialist scum Argument on Spider-Man Has Back Problems · · Score: 1

How about, sucks to be him not because he's going to lose $11 million in potential earnings, but because he has back problems, and loses an opportunity to do what he likes best?

Whats wrong in stressing on the 11 million?

He might have a lot of opportunity in the future to do what he likes best - That would be acting, if anything. If you are talking of the chance to be the spiderman,i would say that he has already done that with his first movie.

Think what you may, the money - 11 million pounds would be the biggest loss if he cant be there for the sequel and was rightly mentioned to be so.

OK, most people don't REALLY plan on buying more than one album in 10, 20, 50, 100 that they sample

Isnt that what sampling is all about ? To make sure that you purchase what you think is really worth a purchase. You are not forced to purchase everything that you check out in the stores, are you? I fail to understand why this is so NASTY when people have been doing it all the time by recording songs off their FM.

The radio analogy works better than a library because tapes are closer to a digital medium than books. Copies are made and distributed, rather than lent out to people as in a library.

  3. Re:What a waste of mental effort on Chemical Haiku: Elements' Qualities in a Few Syllables · · Score: 3, Insightful

    Your argument sounds like

"why waste precious use of mental resources by making students multiply and divide instead of handing them over calculaters ?"

There arent many who subscribe to the iceberg theory that you have mentioned. Memory is just like any other muscle - train it , keep it sharp and it will help you. Knowing to memorize something like the periodic table after all involves knowing what exactly helps your brain remember things - for some it might be a rhyme like the haiku and for others it could be pictures for association . Either way, it helps develop a skill!

  4. Re:Whats the point? on Live Vorbis Streams Over 802.11b From SXSW.com · · Score: 1

On demand models wouldnt be cost effective. The difference between broadcast & on demand music would be analogous to using the public transport instead of driving your car. Hybrid systems that take user feedback would ideally fall between the two extremes.

  5. Re:Whats the point? on Live Vorbis Streams Over 802.11b From SXSW.com · · Score: 4, Interesting

wouldnt make a difference to general listening but it is definitely an innovation. Think of the possibilities :

What if they could ask what song the users would like to be played next and switch accordingly based upon wishes of the majority ?

What if they could generate a system where people could rate songs over the same Wifi (using PDAs maybe) and systems are in place to determine what might be played next.

What if they are able to transmit the mp3 tags of the songs also so that you can rush to the CD store and get the album for that one song ?

  6. Sony turns out to be more expensive on EA, Eidos Have No Plans for Xbox Live · · Score: 4, Insightful

Well , sony selling out its equipment to connect to game services might make things more ideal for game makers but not consumers.Every time a new game come out we would end up paying a brand new subscription fee.
X-Boxers would get to play as long as they like with as many games they like for a fixed subscription fee. I think Microsoft has it right here.

  8. Re:Gaming is the next frontier on The Future of PC Games, According to Microsoft · · Score: 1

I dont think microsoft is building this gaming support because it is the next frontier. Gaming on PC after all has a limited market given that it has to be split among consoles like Gamecube, PS2 and even XBox.

The intent microsoft may have in improving gaming support in their next OS could be :
    1. To offer Game developers an added incentive to develop for XBOX as opposed to PS2. Write once and run on XBOX or PC !
    2. Further prohibit Warezs . The path servers referred to in the article would not work when the game is not authentic. This will increase developer's intent to make more games for PCs which translates to Microsoft's advantage by Point 1.
    3. Standardize controls - make them more Xboxish to fuel XBOX adoption.

    1. Selling something to me.
