    Which is to say that once the 18-34 demographic starts buying $400 PS3s instead of $400 video cards, developers may have no choice but to follow suit.

    Serious gamers use serious hardware and have the serious dollars to get the best. While gamers have cash, developers will be there to look after their needs.

    I signed up at my local the other day, because I had to to use their Internet access, even though I didn't want to borrow books.

    Presumably this is a reference for them in case you do something naughty online, which wouldn't still be required under the anonymous borrowing.

    Your standard Internet cafe doesn't need ID, so are libraries really as "privacy concious" as the summary makes out?

    Bullshit. Nobody is using anybody, and everybody is using everybody.

    Everyone who contributes to open source has their own adjenda. Private individual programmers may just love using the community software, business may just love the low price tag. Who can complain when everyone (open) wins?

    Frequently updated and interesting content like /. can develop a community around it. From there, whether the site chooses to simply offer a service for the goodwill of their readers, or incorporate a more conventional way of monetizing website traffic, provides the business payoff.

    Smart business IMO, and we'll probably see more of it.

    Personally, it would be a long time before I would trust robotic technology and AI to care for a human being's health and safety.

    It's hardly a primary carer, and isn't suggested as one. It's only meant to assist the eldery (amongst the other suggested uses).

    While it's good that their being ambitious stating a 2010 arrival, I'm sceptical that they will deliver on time if at all.

    I've always wondered about people who buy those massive heatsinks and fans for anything less than the bleeding-edge processors of the time.

    Is there normally a really worthwhile benefit over an upgraded processor (with the savings from using a standard heatsink)? There's the noise too.

    With the Mac Mini being whisper-quiet, I actually prefer the option of hiding it. Maybe it's just that I use mine as a file server in the kitchen.

    The US wont need God, a prosperous (capitalist) China would be a good thing financially for all concerned. As for the military capabilities that wealth may bring - a change in foreign policy wouldn't be such a bad thing for the US at this point in time.

    And there will be nothing tying MS to the x86 architecture. 1. Get Windows hardware independant. 2. Leverage the OS monopoly to form a MS hardware monopoly by only releasing new versions on their hardware. (2.5 Laugh as the courts don't impose any meaningful penalty for point 2. Again.) 3. Profit?

    While globalization is clearly a good thing from a free market perspective, it is not necessarily a good thing for shareholders of American corporations or even for those corporations themselves.

    While I'm not formally educated in economics - why not? Isn't the whole idea of outsourcing that it saves money (ideally) for the business? If the business saves money isn't it more profitable and capitalistic?

    Almost. They need to report their financials once they reach a certain level. It just makes sence that if they have to report anyway to go the whole way.

    Exactly. One of my friends working for herself goes to major cities every few weeks just to get work done.

    She does not need to go for work, but if she is in another state without distractions then she gets heaps more done, pays for her trip with the extra productivity, and parties in clubs she has never been to.

    Personally I find that GPU/RAM/bus speeds count more and more (or is that moore) compared with simply the CPU.


    Speed does not necessarily drive repsonsiveness for desktop users.

    Interesting post. Maybe I was a fraction too agressive with mine. Nevertheless business is business.

    These days when ethics clash with business they lose. It's nothing personal, and any "losers" out of a deal are not wished any harm. More often than not the people making the decisions are, at the same time, just doing their job.
