    You know what? You touch on an interesting point, which is similar to how Wonder Boys was written. In both of them they deal with fairly serious topics (the breakup of a marriage, world war 2 [quite different amongst themselves]) and in both books Chabon definately seperates the reader from the emotions of the situation. Its almost like he purposefully does it to keep the focus on the story being told not the emotions wrapped up with it... interesting... i didn't even think about it til i read your post.

    I'm reading the book now after having read and very much enjoyed The Wonder Boys.

    I thought this was a much tougher read, and even though I'm into comics I'm having trouble getting into it. I don't blame the book for this, but maybe my schedule... Chabon has some great moments that will have you laughing outloud and at the same time really making your brain work for the laugh.

    If I'm up to date, I know officially the Earth has a total of 3 moons, 1 being in a strange horseshoe orbit that cirlces the Sun encounters earth and turns around the other way.

    But from what I've read a lot of scientists are hesitant to call these moons, because they don't fit in with the old conception of "Lookit that big ol' moon of ours."

    So ask 1 astronomer he'll prolly say anythings a moon, ask another and he may put size restrictions on it.

    We've definately lost all the mom&pop/mall arcades in the DC area. But all of a sudden we have a good number of Dave and Busters or Jillians popping up. Huge, entertainment centers almost with drinking, pool, darts, and tons of arcades. Its a young Vegas or an old Arcade.

    I have to admit the poster of "Booooring" is right that this is not the best author in the world. Spelling and grammer errors aren't uncommon, but I can look past that to try to enjoy the story, which so far is panning out in a logical manner, making valid conclusions.

    One thing on the gore : it is pretty heavy and some might say unnecc. I think the author is using it to support the underlying idea that... this future is boring. Theres nothing to do, nothing else to invent, no way to die! X-treme sports would be come more extreme, and with serial killers getting a chance to fulfil their wishes on simulations... maybe not classy but a good view of the slum of a Singularity future.

    Why are you attacking him? This isn't him stating fact, its him explaining a theory to you as much as a Rabbi explaining religion, or Einstein explaining relativity.

    He's not saying go out there and prepare for the Rapture, he filled you in.

    By your theory the shelves would never dwindle out of xbox's, because for every one bought, another one would be created.

    I think in actuality x-boxes would be made in batches, with large ammounts being sold thru supply chains to reach the consumers. I don't think everytime BestBuy sells ones they call it in.

    BestBuy: "Microsoft?"
    MS : "Yes?"
    BB : "This is Best Buy, we just sold a xbox."
    MS : "Ok, we'll get one in the mail to ya today."
    BB : "Great! Oop, one second, we just sold another."
    MS : "Gotcha, 2 xboxes on their way."
    BB : "Better make it three."

    Seriously... you're a moron. Everyone knows Microsoft is taking a loss on the xbox, just like sony and nintendo are on theirs. Point is buying one GIVES money to mircosoft.

    Theres an economic definition called sunken cost. If microsoft makes an xbox for 300 and get it on a shelf, they're out 300, NO MATTER WHAT HAPPENS. If you go ahead and buy said box for 200, now they're only out 100.

    This isn't rocket science people...

    The original book, broken into a trilogy by the publisher and thus named: The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and Return of the King, were first published in 1955. Wow... its like Tolkien was Nostradomus...

    Wow, that seemed a little angry, but I for the most part agree with you. I have an XP machine, that only hung when i was overclocking, and a 2k machine thats been running IIS/SQL Server for over a month without a crash (to be honest I don't think its ever crashed, i usually turn it off eventually due to a reboot or whatever).

    At the same time, I take very good care of my machines. I keep them clean, make sure no rouge software is found on them, etc. Now maybe this is more time than some people are willing to put in, at the same time I've spent a good couple of hours trying to install Linux without stable success.

    Now to the kids topic... i think a Mac OS is a good idea if you refuse to use Windows anymore. Their older software might not run (though i think it might under powerpc or whatever) and I know that Mac OS is a very user-friendly OS.

    Are you even reading the other posts or the article? Apparently not, as stated already the lines of code were reveresed in the Register's report. J2EE used 14k while .NET used 2,600.

    So according to your theory, the Javaites used inline, and they were still slower.

    But also pointed out, does length of code really matter beyond time of development?

    opinion - Thats exactly what one should do if using ASP; create a COM object with the business logic, use ASP to create the design/display.

    Its all written up in the Microsoft DNA, but being a linux zealot I'm sure you skipped that.

    Oh well, some people think Microsoft is 100% evil, and others realize that each language has its own unique advantages for given situations.

    Again, I'm posting this as an explation which i did to others, but so far you're the only one who wasn't personally offended by my post (which meant no offense to anyone) and I appreciate that sir.

    I'm glad you don't use RCs and that PHP worked out for you. I think "pointless" was too harsh a comment from me, which i retract now, when i should have said that a true n-tiered application would be that much harder to achieve. Naturally I don't think PHP is 'pointless' to all companies, which is why I apologize to you now (not the others who attacked in zealot fashion).

    I have always worked with remote objects to completely seperate design from logic but perhaps that stems from my Business major not my CS degree. And that, sir, is where my bias stems from. If your company took personal offense I apologize, and good for you having Fortune 500 clients, you must be very proud!

    I'm trying to take a higher road than you here, and point out 1. I meant no attack on anyone, if you took anything in my post personally you have issues of your own to work out. 2. I just replied to another saying that pehaps my "pointless" statement was too harsh. What I tried to imply, and in my idoicy compared to your higher intelligence, came out sounding like a blathering idiot. I was simply suggesting that without the use of Remote Calls an n-tiered network would be extremely hard to achieve.

    But thanks for all your stats, I totally read them all, and I'm glad I'm the arogant one.
