You can see the problem clearly just by looking at the manual: the button that they call the "Sleep/Wake" button is actually the "Lock/Unlock" button. On most devices "sleep" means processor and radios off, and on most devices "lock" means display and keypad off, but radios and processor on. The button is mis-named, and that is kinda confusing.

  3. Solution: Avoid RIAA Music on A Commonsense Proposal On Net Radio Rates · · Score: 1

Can't a web radio station continue to operate without paying royalties as long as they stick to independent labels? What is the history of indie labels enforcing radio royalties and such?

I say let them raise the rates and then spread the word that internet stations just need to avoid all labels in the RIAA to avoid getting slammed.

Netflix comes close, but lacks instant gratification

Netflix has added the "Watch Now" feature. The selection is somewhat limited and it requires IE, but there are still a lot of movies I want to see on there. It's a step in the right direction.

These days I primarily use bittorrent for things I just can't get on Netflix or anywhere else. I think it's good to buy or rent things you really like to put in your vote and money for people doing really good creative work. And if you can't wait for the DVD to come in the mail, bittorrent AND buy/rent.

  5. Trackballs Make my Hand Hurt on Mouse or Trackball? · · Score: 1

I prefer trackballs because they require less space and I just like the way they feel. But every time I use one lately my hand starts hurting. Maybe this is why they are dying out. Also they do take some practice to use well. It's not as intuitive as a mouse.

Personally, I think Windows peaked with 2000.

Fixing a hosed 2000 system can be a nightmare because the installer sucks. And setting up a home network was really unreliable. Also wireless network support sucks, and USB was more cumbersome. I can't stand dealing with 2000 anymore. Why would you like 2000 more than XP (other than the fact that you don't have to activate it?)

I don't understand how they're getting the 8 meters. You can see a guy's shoe in the picture for comparison, and the whole thing looks like it's about 2 meters long. It is big, but I was picturing something more sci-fi style from the description.

  12. Intensity of the Smell? on Human Sense of Smell Underestimated · · Score: 1

There's no mention of intensity of smell. It seems pretty obvious that humans could follow a smell trail if it's strong enough -- we do have the sense of smell and the ability to turn our heads in different directions. Not much of a revelation.

One of the researchers in the article says the biggest problem for humans vs. dogs is that they can's move as fast with their nose to the ground. Sure we can follow a strong scent trail through the grass, but could a human track somebody walking through the woods just by scent? I seriously doubt it. Animals seem to have the ability to track very subtle smells and easily differentiate them from many other strong smells in the same area.

  16. Re:They would lose the Intel case contest because on Beautiful Wooden PC Cases · · Score: 1

It's hard for me to picture a stylish wood design, but I think the place to start would be some of the better non-wood designs, like the Mac Mini. A Mac Mini in a really light or dark wood box might be nice. Or maybe take a page from the other McIntosh (the high fidelity audio company), with their classic retro industrial style -- a wood case with mechanical VU power meters and super-minimal switch/control design. Actually a lot of the hifi equipment companies have really clean design that could be used as a starting point.

But if you're going to have a large super power workstation, ones money would probably be better spent having a nice piece of wood furniture modified to hide the CPU.

  17. They would lose the Intel case contest because on Beautiful Wooden PC Cases · · Score: 1

...they're tacky. Sorry, but the designs are gross and dated, and not in a fun retro way. If I'm paying $5000+ for a computer case, I expect the company to at least hire a good designer. You could probably hire a designer and a good local woodshop to make a much better looking case for the the same price.

  19. Re:Watched but not watched.. on MySpace Trumps YouTube in Video · · Score: 2, Informative

If you look at the stats, Myspace had 37k unique streamers/day, and Youtube had 30k unique streamers/day. So they're pretty close for number of unique video users. It's just that Myspace gets a lot more videos viewed per user, which I suspect is from embedded and pushed content.

The quality of the content of the videos on Myspace isn't even close to Youtube IMO. I just quit watching Myspace videos because they were often ads, or they just weren't funny or interesting. The features on Youtube often are funny, or are really creative and/or weird, which is cool. Plus they have so much rare and vintage content. And I've never had anyone send me a link to a Myspace video, but I get sent links to Youtube videos very frequently.

  20. Lonelygirl15 on What Is Real On YouTube? · · Score: 1

Lonelygirl15 should not be lumped in there like it's just another mean trick. It was deceptive, but not in a bad way. The whole thing was brilliant IMO. You may find her annoying, but the whole story arc is great.

And the most amazing part is including the occult stuff, leading people to speculate it may be leading up to some Halloween thing: misleading the viewer into thinking her parents are fundamentalist Christian, then the mysterious ritual, then the barely noticeable shrine to Aleister Crowley in her room, the secret numbers? I don't know what the payoff is for the company behind it, but this is GREAT stuff. Read more about it here if you haven't been following it.

Calling this typical Microsoft and co. bad style is ridiculous. I expected it to be silver, have too many decorative lines, and prominent blue LEDs. But this thing actually looks pretty good.

I definitely hope a crack comes soon, but most people will still have to upgrade their hardware. It takes a LOT of power to play back HD smoothly, and a lot of storage space too. I have a computer capable of playing the latest games at decent resolution and framerate, but it struggles playing some HD content. There's no way it could play 1080 anything. 720 it can do sometimes depending on the codec and bitrate. I'm an artist and run a gallery that specializes in computer video, so I deal with quite a bit of HD content on the computer.
