  1. Re:Dear Prince on Prince, Village People to Sue The Pirate Bay · · Score: 1

    Dear Prince,

I imagine you don't sell many records these days and receive little royalties. But that has less likely to do with piracy and more to do with the fact that you haven't been relevant in the music world in over 15 years. My 17 year old daughter probably has heard of you, but then, she's heard of the battle of hastings, too. The same is true of ABBA, but even more so. Right, but for the wrong reasons. Here, I'll fix it for you:

    Dear Prince,

I imagine you don't sell many records these days and receive little royalties. But that has less likely to do with piracy and more to do with the fact that you have given out too many CD's for free under the guise of promotions. You are still *very* relevant in the music industry. If you had only given, say, half as many away, you would've made more in royalties. Maybe I'm partial, though, since I'm originally from the Twin Cities. But that doesn't explain why he was inducted in to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2004, why he won two grammies in 2008. He also won a Webby in 2006 for being one of, if not, the first artists to release an entire album online (although that back in '97).

I think the problem is just his lawyers got bored (or ran out of money and needed some more jobs) and said it was a good idea.

  3. Re:iPhone killer? on Alienware Planning Android iPhone Killer? · · Score: 1

I don't think the iPhone has attained the status that any new smartphone must be considered a competitor first and foremost to it. Especially when, as in this case, it's a completely different styling concept. I do see iPhones here and there, but by far most people still use other cellphones, so I do not think the iPhone merits a reference in the title of every story about cellphones. Very good point, but let me compound why the iPhone is not going to overtake the cell phone market:

The vast majority of consumers do not want to have to use a music library/player on their computers in order to use a cell phone. They're two drastically different devices with very little overlap.

iPhones do not have the "Business image." That belongs primarily to RIM's Blackberry.

At least in American markets, consumers are afraid to spend money up-front for a cell phone. Rather (and unknown to them,) they essentially pay a two-year loan on their phones.
  4. I'm confused.... on House Declines To Vote On Telecom Immunity · · Score: 0

So basically, the Dem's (for the most part) are voting to give telecoms immunity, while the GOP is saying nay?

The corruption is confusing me here:
I want to know why the Republicans are voting against this, as in why the Republicans want to be able to hold the telecoms responsible (seeing as how it was their administration that is associated,) whereas the Dems are willing to grant immunity and basically sweep the incidents under the rug (instead of using them as an effigy and burning them in front of the White House?)

  5. Bundling on Whatever Happened To The Joystick? · · Score: 1

There are probably some chicken-and-egg issues as well. You don't buy a joystick if you haven't a game to go with it, and you don't buy appropriate games if you don't have a joystick. And then the Guitar Hero Gods said "Let there be Bundling."

Seriously, most computer games are still purchased in brick&mortar stores. If there were another huge games that called for the use of a joystick, you know there would be a bundle of the game with the joystick. Odds are they wouldn't be in the same packaging, but the manufacturers would discount the purchase of both the game and a selection of joysticks.

I've been thinking about getting a joystick lately, for the sole purpose of flight simulators (combat & non-combat.) But Microsoft Flight Simulator X (Delux) is still $50, and it's been out for a year and a half! And, unsurprisingly, if you buy it on Amazon (for $45,) they are offering a discount bundle of the game with, that's right, a joystick.

Must purchase an OEM copy of either XP or Vista. R and T Series Thinkpads are being sold with the option of SuSE Enterprise Desktop 10, so why not the X Series?

    Regarding the article:

... and will be limited to a paltry 64 gigabytes of storage. I'm sorry, but for the applications these laptops are going to be serving, 64GB of internal storage should be plenty. If not, well, there are plenty of external storage needs, whether NAS, thumb/pen drives, or full-fledged external hard drives (which one can choose a "portable" version or a not-so-portable version.)

No mention of a possible entry in the Reserve Series (and with the base price for the "standard" X300, who wouldn't want to pay $5,000 for a laptop!?)

  17. Don't forget SAM's on TSA Changes Screening Based on Blog Suggestion · · Score: 1

The true threat with aircraft security is hijacking. A hijacker can take over an aircraft and use the plane as a missile. There are plenty of places to just blow up that would kill more people that can fit on a plane. Don't forget SAM's. For some reason, & you may call me crazy, but I can't imagine that it would be terribly difficult for an organized crime network to get hold of some SAM's. Despite the country's efforts for trying to make me feel safe (through some idiotic thinking that fearmongering will make us 'feel safer'), if the russian mafia wanted a SAM in the United States, they could get it; if they happen to be in a populated area (e.g. New York, Chicago), they could launch it from one of a number of parking ramps. Don't blame the greens. The greens never had had enough power to influence the population enough to either use or not use nuclear. Right now, Washington has been fuelling people's fears of dirty bombs and our "national security" with regards to the waste fuel.

Now if we could just drop the spent nuclear waste in some empty oil fields, I think we'd have a damn good solution. Even if group found a way to extract the spent fuel from the bottom of an empty oil field, it would take them a long enough time to be able to actualy extract it (the physical part of extraction) that we could pick them up on satellite and respond with the military.

How much environmental damage could happen if we buried spent nuclear wasted miles below the surface of a desert?

  25. Stop-gap on US Pulls Plug on Low-CO2 Powerplant Project · · Score: 4, Insightful

My interpretation is that this would be a stop-gap until we can develop an efficient means of using renewable energy. Why?

Shifting reliance from oil to coal would "Make America safer!" because the US is like the Saudi Arabia of coal
China is building powerplants like crazy, and guess what they're using? COAL
Storing CO2 underground is a temporary solution, but it would buy us some more time to develop means of converting it into something in another physical state (gas or liquid). Then perhaps we could begin to fill up those oil fields we've been draining for the past hundred & some odd years.
