It's not about the time put in, it's about the time commitment raiding requires. They tried to solve this with 10 man raids which could be done with pickup groups (which at times can be equally as painful). Just because someone can devote 2-5 hours a day playing a game doesn't equate to them being able to commit the same 4 hours a night to raid with their guild plus the hours mindlessly collecting reagents, potions, and repair money they'll need to get through the raiding.

But then there was the other aspect of raiding, the repetitiveness. Every week you have the same raids, with the same fights, that have to be executed (orchestrated) in the *same* fashion. I do know with the BC they focused on spreading good loot on quest chains that were varied and at the end of which you were guaranteed *some* reward and smaller raids.

The shortcoming of that analogy is that there isn't a EULA that pops up (that you didn't get to see when you bought the car) forcing you to accept to use the shifter (and drive the car).

Now I find a more apt analogy (which I've posted countless times) would be if 95% of the cars in dealerships came with the same expensive Bose radio (or insert any other easily replaceable accessory - GPS, stickers, undercoating, etc) from the same manufacturer and gave you grief about getting a car without it (going so far as to charge you *extra* for the option to buy the car without it or with a less expensive but better performing unit).

And that last tidbit is pointed squarely at HP. I was going to buy a laptop from them, but when I went to choose Ubuntu (or Free Dos), they first made me select "customize" which adds $300 to the price, only then I could select Ubuntu or FreeDos and get $100 off. So yeah, $200 extra to take off a feature...

On the other hand you can take a boot CD, put it in a computer and within a few minutes have a working machine.

And nobody is up in arms over HP selling their own OS, or Dell selling their own OS, or Apple selling their own OS. People are upset because 95% of the manufacturers are forcing the same 3rd party OS on their customers with no easy way to opt out of it.

What is going would be more akin to Ford, Chevy, Chrysler, Hummer, Honda, Toyota, Nissan, etc, etc, etc selling their cars with the same 3rd party accessory that is not necessary to take delivery of the car (like say "accent stickers", a stereo, air freshener, or GPS). Yes an OS is vital to using a computer, but it's nowhere near as challenging to install/replace/re-install as a car engine.

And yes, if regular Joes are expected to be able to use Re-Load disks (just call any PC manufacturer with issues), they should be given the choice to take the computer w/o the OS or have an *easy* option to return the OS and get a refund commensurate with the cost of the OS.

I was looking at HP laptops after I heard that they were offering Ubuntu and I saw one model that looked like a decent deal. So I selected it and started to look for the Ubuntu option:

    1. I first had to select "Customize" (there was no way around this, Ubuntu was only available through selecting "Customize" first) - This immediately added $300 to the price of the laptop.
    2. Then I selected Ubuntu - This reduced the price by $100

End result? I had to pay $200 to get Ubuntu (or FreeDos) on the laptop. How is this considered a choice?

Like someone else mentioned, this would be akin to Ford selling all their cars with a Garmin(TM) GPS system. But going a bit further, they charge you *extra* to have no GPS!

Or my analogy, if 95% of the car manufacturers included Bose stereos and wouldn't give you an (easy) way to get the car w/o the stereo.

Then it struck me as I was reading this thread.... I saw it once before. Evangelion. It had a good english voice cast (I even watched it subbed to give that a chance and decided the english dubbing was really good and worth watching). That was until "The End of Evangelion", they changed a couple of the voices, and they really did not fit the characters *at all*. It was horrible, particularly the voice of Hyuga... it was jarring and ruined the whole mood of the film...

"So really, you aren't interested in buying the media,"

He didn't say that, he was complaining about kindle books (not the reader) in that they are way too limited for what they cost. This in turn leads to the conclusion, what value does the kindle have if it's own native format is such a bad deal (and aside from reading project Gutenberg, reading "pirated books" may not be a moral option for some).

Which is true that in the case of the Kindle, the pirates again have a better product (with less restrictions). Same thing with DVDs. I have seen upscaling DVD players that *won't* upscale "copyrighted movies" (eg virtually all originals which have CSS) through the component outputs and instead limits them to 480p, though if you pirate said movie (and remove the CSS), the pirated copy will play at full 1080i through the component output.

So in this case a pirated book or simply the old paperback still present a much better value (aside from the "carry you whole book library in one locked down device!" point).
