One thing that helps a lot is to make a bunch of add-in crap that comes with the game. Working Designs did an awesome job of this with their remakes of the Lunar series. Granted, it's easier for RPGs because everybody loves overworld maps. I'm not sure how much you could do for a game like Doom. At the very least I would make sure that the manual is nice. Try to include some interesting and useful information in it too. If you have good music in the game consider including a soundtrack cd. Concept art is another cool thing also. A game like Doom 3 might even justify its own "making of" video.

Of course, all this stuff can be pirated too, but the point is to make people feel like there really is something to get if they buy the game.

Laugh all you want, but I program mostly in the computer algebra system Maple. My favorite feature of its language is that identical objects are stored only once by the system - you effectively use pointers for everything, and it is completely transparent. There are a lot of crazy hacks you can do with this functionality, keeping in mind that it incurs no extra overhead.

I did "rm -rf" on my home directory two freakin days ago! I wanted to wipe some files from another directory and I accidentally typed "cd" before doing it. To put this into perspective, I have math software which I've developed over three years and an almost finished masters thesis. For what its worth, these things are periodically backed up to a research lab, a PC at a third location, my notebook computer, and a USB key. Unfortunately, I can't say the same for my wife's two day old documents though! I need to implement something small and automatic, which can be rolled back. I was thinking of a cron job which would tar/gzip particular directories (gotta skip those MP3's!) into a dated archive, ie: YYYYMMDD.tgz on a separate partition. Do people here have any other suggestions ? It does not have to be easy to roll back files.

Some definitions of documentary do include the requirement of objectivity. Personally, I think that is silly. Films can't really be objective if the subject is political, and I think this should be reflected in a modern definition of documentary.
