There is *nothing* in there that would lead anyone to conclude that removing ABS would be an advantage. Quite the opposite. The only time it increases your stopping distance is a) driver misuse (letting up on the brake due to feedback), b) snow covered road where the "piling up" of snow in front of the wheel helps.

...People like you will keep propogating this myth and disinformation, and it must stop here...

OMG, what an arrogant comment. Do you work for the IIHS, NHTSA, or a major insurance carrier?

In this case, I picked the first reference from your google search and read the second paragraph that contained this line:

It isn't entirely clear that antilock braking will reduce stopping distance for the skilled driver

First off, 99% of the drivers on the road today are not even close to the class of 'skilled driver' Reaction times, distractions, lack of any formal training, and a variety of other factors make ABS the BEST option for vehicles on the road today. Have you ever been to a driving school on a closed track with an instructor in the car at all times? Perhaps you have, but most of the drivers on the roads today have not.

A skilled driver can stop better without ABS brakes (particularly on dry pavement) using a technique called threshold braking. Essentially, threshold braking is when a driver applies the maximum amount force on the brakes to slow the car without locking the wheels. If executed properly, the wheels will not lock, but actually move slower than the rotational speed required to maintain speed on the pavement. It tends to work best in an open-wheeled race car, but the technique also applies to roadgoing cars. Anti-lock brakes will hinder this technique. Check racing literature -- using this technique yields shorter stopping distances then punching the brake on an ABS-equiped vehicle.

Your comment about threshold braking is so funny, because ABS is computer controlled threshold braking. While racing on the track, most vehicles are without ABS brakes due to the fact that the race driver can't afford the weight of a braking management system, and they want to be able to have zero interferience when appying brakes, just the same when a driver wishes to have no traction management system on a race car. These systems limit the amount of feedback required when 100% of your focus is going towards the "line".

ABS brakes also tend to limit the ability of a driver to use another technique called trail-braking (and left-foot braking). These are braking techniques used to offset the balance of the vehicle in a corner and tighten up the line through a corner. This is used in both racing situations and emergency avoidance manuvers.

Ask your closest co-worker is he knows how to apply trail-braking in emergency avoidance stituations... I doubt they will have any idea of what you are talking about. Trail braking is not as simple as you think.

Additionally, having ABS tends to make drivers over-confident -- many tend to steer during heavy braking, which unloads the rear tires of a car and can easily cause a vehicle to spin out of control...or cause a sport-ute to roll.

Many drivers prefer ABS brakes -- which is fine. Its their choice. In fact, for most drivers, ABS is better...but the absolute mentality you have is just wrong.

ABS reduces stopping distances when the typical driver actuates the brake pedal to it's fullest, fact.

  8. 1c fee to skip, how about pay-per watched? on Cable Companies Despise PVRs · · Score: 1

"I suggested that consumers pay 1 cent per commercial skipped (which is about the same as what advertisers pay). That would be equivalent to $10/thousand commercials skipped. I think that's reasonable. I also suggested that targeted advertising could be a win-win for all involved by delivering ads in areas that are of greater interest to the viewer so that there would be less incentive to skip and fewer ads would have to be delivered due to the higher prices paid for the targeted group. I also predicted that this dynamic combined with competition between satellite and cable would ultimately make both services free."

This is brilliant. Not only can the companies pay the cable companies to air commercials, they get even more money when people skip them. So If you want want me to air a commercial, pay me, if you want to skip a commercial, pay me. Where do the companies get their refund? What about pay-per watched commercial advertising, such as google's adwords select?

  14. George, go back to your galaxy and stay.... on Fox CEO Says Tech & Media Should Work Together · · Score: 1

Can someone please explain why Lucas's comments matter? George Lucas is involved in a small niche of film genre that a majority of people do not like. Mr. Lucas is so reclusive to his own staff that most people I spoke with when at Skywalker Ranch simply scratched their heads and commented, "that's George." George makes a few billion dollars by chance and people claim he is god. George has no idea what the consumer is, or how the consumer thinks. He simply knows how to sqeeze every last dollar out of the smallest amount of product. Anyone that makes his annual take has no idea what it means to be part of society, and these two fellows are way out of touch. George will have none of my respect, as he is too concerned about the lining in his pockets. Now if this were Tom Hanks, I would respect his comments 1000x more; however, Tom is busy educating, filming, and pushing his political ideas out there. While I don't agree with a lot of Tom's views, he has done more to educate the general public about the space program than NASA itself, IMHO. George on the other hand is spreading misinformation about the physics of space with his ridiculous, yet fun, movies (except for Ep. 1, which just sucked ass). This argument made by the entertainment conglomerates is baseless. Media made on the backs of poorly paid writers, film crews, and secondary staff has no right to make such claims. $10 million to "The Rock" for a movie, and claims of going broke make so much sense to me. Anyoen agree?

No matter what they try to force down on us, it will fail. In the end the China factor takes the cake. They seem to forget that China is a country of a few billion people that don't give a rats ass about US copyright law.

Also, don't go with broadband based content delivery.. a /. article yesterday talked about 5gb caps on broadband. 2-3 movies and your done for the month.

A quick search on IMDB proves why George doesn't get my respect when it comes to preaching to the public:

By 2015 I would hope to see a combination of E85 Fuel and hybrid electric. E85 is a fuel blend of 100% renewable Ethanol and 15% gasoline. I have seen people claim that American car manufacturers are not paying attention to the "green" car. I say that isn't true. The Ford Taurus, in all it's grand ugliness has been a FFV vehicle for years. An FFV vehicle is a fuel flexible vehicle that can run on 100% gasoline, to any mix of ethonol up to 85%. There are currently more FFV vehicles on the market today than Hybrid Electric Vehicles.

    2.7L Dodge Stratus Sedan

    4.0L Selected Mountaineers
    2.2L Hombre pickup 2WD
    2.2L Chevrolet S-10 pickup 2WD
    2.2L Sonoma GMC pickup 2WD

E85 vehicles require no plug either. They also require no infrastructure upgrades like other solutions. Ethanol combustion produces friendly CO2 gas that can be used by plants, and water. Ethanol produces 110 octane, thus keeping your engine cleaner. The biggest myth about Ethanol, is that it requires corn to be efficient. Not true again, many industrial byproducts can be used to produce Ethanol. The byproducts of Ethanol production can be used in many other applications.

    Now image all this:

US production of Ethanol - 85%
US production of Oil - takes care of 5% of the Gasoline requirement
10 % of Gasoline is still from foreign sources

Combined with Hybrid Electric technology we can create a vehicle that gets 50+ MPG, reduces pollutants by probably 90%, and changes NONE of our infrastructure requirements!

Why hasn't this technology come to the forefront... because for some reason, no one wants to see Ethanol succeed. The oil companies shot down Ethanol in the 80's and Archer Daniels Midland worked out a deal with the oil companies to save itself from bankruptcy due to bad management.
