this is the best stat I could find on the topic, but do you really think that 73.3 % (+ canada) of the world uses less than half of the equipment online?
First of all, we don't all live near enough motive water to do so--some people live in deserts.
further http://www.bchydro.bc.ca/environment/ says More than 90 per cent of BC Hydro's electricity is generated by water powering turbines at 30 hydroelectric facilities on 27 watersheds around British Columbia? but- that's mitigated by the fact http://www.bctc.com/about/faqs.shtml that the bctc states (clipped to get to what I consider relevant) What is the relationship between BC Hydro and BCTC? BC Hydro will be a major customer of BCTC, as will other electricity producers and wholesale customers. BCTC will contract with BC Hydro for certain services, such as engineering and field services.
The fact is, more than 90% of BC hydro's power comes from water- (which isn't practical for the world at large) but bc hydro's product is not 100% of the electricy going thru your lines.
ok-- but you couldn't sniff the activation packets could you? in a sense of knowing what control commands/strings/bits went between tivo and your box...
yes, you could see the individual voip packets contents, but can you determine what passwords were exchanged?
I was unclear, the fact is, you have to provide tivo with a pots sounding dialtone to initialize the system. (my employers inability to use voip may have been unique, but needing a dial tone is required)
the current tivo can use ethernet, AFTER THE INITIAL SETUP phone call to activate..
I used to seriously wonder why, until I realized it was to prevent sniffing of the activation packets... you get enough of those, you could figure out the protocols and have ilicit activations..
I am not aware of any tivo that does not require a phone line for activation/one shot connection..
my boss had to issue his tivo to a neighbor for initial activation- it wouldn't work over his voip phone...

If you can't find an answer to your question here, Ask eBay. Q. Why is there a User Agreement? A. The User Agreement is a legal document that spells out the relationship between you and eBay. It outlines the services, pricing, Privacy Policy, and the buyer and seller relationship for listing and bidding on items in eBay's auction format.
Q. Will the User Agreement change again? A. It may change periodically. When revisions are needed, changes will be posted on the site 30 days before taking effect. You also have the option to receive email notices of any revisions as they occur. To select this option go to the preferences page, by choosing Change my notification preferences under My eBay at Services.
Q. What does "eBay is only a venue" mean? A. eBay is an exciting electronic marketplace where you can buy and sell to your heart's content. However, eBay does not ultimately participate in the transaction between buyer and seller, verify that items are genuine, or guarantee that you will receive payment or auction items. eBay is very concerned about your safety and offers the services of third parties that can provide authentication, insurance, and escrow for your transactions.
an expatriate myself, I'd point out, what they did was end the practice, IN SUCH COUNTRIES as outlawed multiple marrages.. it's not a change of doctrine as such-just a change in civil obedience.
For others I would point out, TYPICALLY, and primarily as a means of support for families who's patriarch had died due to the hardships of the time & place..for support of the family that remained. Yes, I think the system was occasionally abused also

greyhound was the funniest, different towns in california had all kinds of rules, some towns, the driver HAD to turn on the interior light within city limits if it was night time, until the bus pulled outta town, and I know there was one town between Santa Cruz, CA and Los Angeles, where you could only smoke if you were in the last two rows of the bus (greyhound allowed it in the last three rows otherwise)
your question -nope, you made your machine make a request of a specific machine, which was replied to.
if a machine located at any ol' random IP can initiate contact with my home computer, and get a response-that makes it a service running on my computer.
because of a request I made sitting in my chair. I requested the result.
I ask for a webpage, I send out a http request, and await the reply.
a voip phone isn't waiting for a reply, it's waiting for a request to fill.
now, making a call- with no ability to recieve, is a completely different thing.. but a port, waiting for contact, from any machine at any IP address is different, than me, making a request, of a specific IP #
there, you've helped me quantify my definition. if it something on my machine, awaiting contact from any IP, where I didn't contact that IP first? yeah-- that fits my definition of a server.
