    some kids (not me) tried to do something similar to their desks (they put refridgerator boxes over their desks, with little window flaps cut out. It was a small, private school and for some reason the school admin let it go for a while.

    shortly after the first kids did it others started trying to do the same thing, at which point the admin decided this was not going to work and put the smack down on the whole idea.

    it was fine with me as I was starting to worry about what these kids were doing in there?

    Must slashdot keep being deluged w/ apple ipod/itunes stories. The ipod is an overhyped overpriced piece o' junk for about the same money you can get the Iriver iHP120 which plays .ogg files and is about the same size as a ipod. or for on avg $100 less you can get a nomad Zen Extra w/ the killer EL back lit display ...mmmmm blue (pretty) and a very easily replacable battery. or you can pay apple's extremly high prices for ipods, ipod accessories and apparently batteries.

    Often times Linux / osX users (of which I am one), suggest that windows is uniquely vulnerable to security exploits. To some extend this is true, as windows has such a large install base it makes sense to seek to exploit windows as you can create the biggest effect with a windows exploit.
    However it is Linux and osX users do themselves a disservice by assuming that they are completely immune from security holes, as this is not the case and a false sense of superiority and lax security policy can / will eventually be disastrous for the Linux / OSX user.

    The athlon 64 is ok, but the FX is really what you need to for real performance. and a Emachines powered by AMD Athlon 64 is like a yugo w/ a ferrari engine... might be fast but wont be pretty to look at.

    or did apple ship little white gloves with the units to avoid this 'grubbiness' problesm.

    Oh yeah my G/F is seemingly the only girl in the world who thinks the ipod looks stupid. As such I'll be getting her an Iriver iHP-120 for xmas.. Oh yeah and it plays .ogg too hell yeah.

    as a fairly avid mt. biker I don't like the looks of this at all. It (as others have pointed out) looks like a pain in the arse to fix should it go wrong on the trail, seems like it will get all mucked up inside with pretty much no good way to clean it out. and the shifting hubs alway pretty much well SUCK.

    this thing seems to be yet another solution looking for a problem?

    I'd way rather have the chanin and derailers at easy reach if /when something goes wrong 20 miles out in the woods.

    yeah... but that dosn't help if you hard drives die??

    what is the life expectancy of a HD under fairly steady use.... I guess you could get 2 low end machines with network connections and mirror the backups... but then you get a power surge...or your facilities burn to the ground.

    I think we need solid state mass storage solutions.

    You'd GFY I've never paid full retail for any m$ os (nor should anyone w/ half a brain have too. besides windows 98/SE/and ME
    are as seperate upgrade path from NT/2k/and XP/home/pro
    I bought 2k ($120~ish don't remember OEM w/ floppy drive =) for hardware requirement
    approx 16~mos later got XP Pro $130~ish) OEM w/ molex pwr connector (see newegg.com's) hareware req w/ m$ os purchase) and have been using that since
    I'm at about $250 for about 3 years of computing.
    I'm not trying to rank on apple but I am saying if you wanna argue that the cost ratio is the same or better for mac's you are mistaken.
    I have $1400 into my pc (including monitro and os)
    It is like this
    2500XP
    NF7-S
    512 (256x2)corsair DDR3200
    ATI 9500pro
    3ware escalade 7000 raid controller
    2x120GB 180GXP hd's
    onboard soundstorm
    onboard lan
    winXP Pro
    19" NEC 991SB monitor
    it is considerably cheaper than a mac set would have been, and my video editing results have been stellar w/ my PC

    .... I had enough money to be a MAC user.. I mean $2k+ for the Computer then $129 for security updates ...I mean upgrades every what ??? 6mos.. I only wish I had this kinda cash laying about =) oh yeah in other news m$ announces SP2 for windowsXP is cancelled and windows XP.1 will cost $129 =)

(LOL) Then we the guy tries to coax the monkey to give it back, finally yelling at the monkey in fustration...the monkey hucks it away, down it goes to the ground in bits.... omfg that is funny. Monkeys RULE... my brother had his bag of chips stolen by monkeys while he was in India in a similar (but less expensive manner).

    Each time we turn around in the U.S. it appears that the power of coporations has grown..... at the expense of individual rights. Hopefully this will not pass, but it very well might. It is stupid the violations they say they wish to prevent are already covered by existing laws, reguarless of whether a database is involved or not.

    I have now a 3ware escalade 7000-2, I ownz, very stable very fast (true hardware raid) very good linux support. I spent the spent the money on the 3ware after having problems with the onboard raid controller (soltek SL-75FRN-RL) and then bought amusingly enough one of the POS Sil680 based cards...these things are useless, corrupted my data despite numerous attempts to fix problem (new drivers bios update...etc the sil680 is just plain crap.) My G/F (who sometimes wishes I'd spend less on computers...finally told me to buy the 3ware card, cause I was getting so MAD at the SIL 680..she was worried I go nutz... I haven't yet done it but I'm totally going to go out in the woods with my shotgun and shoot the SIL 680. 3ware is very good.

    read it, you pay your $10.99, You must then take it to the camera store to have the images d/l off the camera and burned to cd, the $10.99 includes the d/l fee. The camera store keeps the camera and resells it to a new user.

    It's kinda kewl that this adapter might squeak out some more life for a kt133 system (since millions of computer bits are winding up in landfills or 'recycled' often dangerously in the 3rd world or whatnot. but otoh a new nf2 mb can be had for $100, how much does this thing cost? cause if it is $40 or so plus, I'd be temped to just get a new board and add the old board to my 'bone pile' or ebay it. granted I might have to buy new ram to ... but a new nf2 board would crush one of these adapters running on a kt133 board.

    This is exactly why I can't stand Apple computers, their owners, and all the goddamn artsy Mac loving freaks at my school. 1. The Mac zealots all bemoan Redmond and their monopoly of the x86 o/s market, whilst completely ignoring the complete vertical monopoly Apple maintains over the MAC. 2. Typical that 'for the Mac CAUSE' Mac owners would pay more, to preserve the great Apple alternative. However I must not that I did see an article on pcstats today imploring the AMD faithful to buy higher priced 3000XP and UP to preserve AMD, and stop buying $50 1700XP and oc'ng the XXXX out of them. http://www.pcstats.com/articleview.cfm?articleid=1 409&page=7 Unlike some previous launches, the AthlonXP 3200+ is readily available which shows that AMD no longer has any manufacturing problems. What they need though is for the AMD fans out there to "put up" and buy the higher end processors instead of "getting the $50 processor and overclocking". Sigh⦠right, Iâ(TM)d rather pay $50, AMD needs to pull it head out and get the Athlon64 out the doorâ¦â¦ Or oh Iâ(TM)ve got a solution to keep Mac and AMD zealots happy (or at least keep apple in business) Move the OS to x86-64. Think of it OS X on Dual Opteronâ(TM)s â¦â¦oh wait now I am dreaming. =\
