Loaning a CD to someone is not illegial, however giving out your music to the masses is. If you loan him your CD, he listens to it in his car/etc, decides to buy some of the songs from iTMS, that is alot different than someone ripping their songs to mp3 and sharing it to thounsands of strangers on the internet. It would be like Xeroxing an entire book and giving it away vs. loaning someone a book.
Goldfish don't die after a week, that's just the beginning of the range. 1 Week to 10+ Years. My last goldfish lived 5 years, I won him at a fair, then my little sister tipped the tank and he died.
I wouldn't want one of the others (Dell, iRiver, etc) is because like the pc market, it will be outdated and unsupported soon. Having somthing everyone has (the iPod) is better, so you can share problems with a community, etc. With anything else, you just can't do this. Things in the PC industry seem to die off fast with no community to back it up. I had a hot d-link mp3 player, buttons and such fell out, crappy software with it, etc. Oh, and no community to back it up. That's why I choose apple products over most PC ones, lifespan and community support.
A better question is: Why should Penn State not do something that benefits 95+% of their student body just because they can't offer it to another 5%?
It would be like them adding a new wing to the building, and having all stairs and no wheelchair ramps, just because a majority can use it doesn't mean everyone should be FORCED to pay for/use it. I would rather see this done with iTunes so that it could stay cross-platform. It might be a good incentive for a linux version too.
This is all true however, this plan is to keep A from happening, B will be a little harder to happen. Hazmat trucks need strict regulation, and I think that this is a perfect way to keep A from happening. Just because the plan doesn't stop the worst of all scinerios, doesn't mean it can't be used for minimal security.
The only thing I want is an anti-ddos type system. So you can request to the internet that a specific IP cannot contact you if they are sending so many junk packets, etc. Then all the ddos traffic will be stopped at a backbone, or have the backbone where you can tell it not to send you ICMP/UDP info, etc.
a middle finger sticking up, or somthing very absured and not accepted by the masses, so it will appear on hacked computers, etc. Anything except the goatse guy.
My main sugestion would be to spraypaint the PVC pipe to blend in better, and to dirrectly tie it into the sterio system, and have the screen mounted in the middle better so it isn't in the way of a passenger, other than that, great job with the iBook, most people don't "mod" their macs. Kudos to you for being one of few.
I think it is time we make a more userfriendly, windowmanager-specific GUI for Linux/FreeBSD/etc. Make a unified interface for linux and other derivatives, then see if it is accepted. Make it like windows where all you see the whole time is the user interface, to make it better for the desktop world, some say that choice is good, and the ability to run programs remotely is good, but now days for the average desktop user, this is not very practical, and choice is becoming randomness since there is no standard user interface guideline for Linux. Lets make someone like MacOS X for x86, but based on Linux: fast, easy, etc. I could help with UI development, etc if anyone is interested in starting a project, I'm not much for coding though. Linux needs somthing original.
The problem is that Chrome Boxes have been made available to Joe SixPack, so he can talk on his cell phone in his SUV so he can get to McDonalds fast. We, as geeks need to be sure we don't let Joe Sixpacks get a hold of our ideas, even if a female human tempts us to release information (It's happened to me).
I stand corrected, I did a little more research on it, and Diesel is better than gaoline, guess the person who told me about it was a hypocrate, so why doesn't the Prius use a Diesel motor? Would be be harder for it to start up and stop when makes a complete stop or somthing?
The eMac has already had the G4 with Altivec for quite some time, so the only G4 that isn't advertised with it would be the iBook. We need to squeeze the real specs out of Apple somehow, I say we all email them.
I was thinking the same thing, there is a VW car that has solar panels on the sunroof to generate sone electricity, and I was thinking that it would be perfect for a car like the Prius to generate more electricity for the electric motor, it is hard to say if it would actually help with all the extra cost/weight of solar panels though.
The problem with the TDI is that Diesel emisions are much worse for the enviroment than gasoline. The particles are less than 1 micron, and once you breathe it in, it doesn't leave, causing cancer, etc. The Prius was desinged to have as few emissions as possible, I think it is perfect for intercity driving, when you are idling at stop lights alot, etc. If only ford would make a hybrid crown victoria for Taxi's, they would save a fourtune driving in the city with all the stopping, idling, etc, the ideal situation for a Hybrid car. I think we need to slowly move away from Diesel from it's effects on the enviroment.
The two major problems I have with VoIP is that there isn't one open standard, it is all different networks, it just seems it could be unified somehow. Also, every VoIP program I have used, including skype break up, and there is always a good amount of delay. If you are on tradition phone with someone, ask them to say ping, then you say pong, it will take no time at all, but with Skype, etc this is a whole new story with a lag of 1-2 seconds. I don't know when or if these issues will be completely gone, even though it is better than it used to be.
Military, I have a friend who didn't want to flip burgers anymore, they are paying for all of his college, and it is making him a better all 'round person, and he is VERY physically fit.
New ideas could be implemented into the solar cars though, like regenerating brakes, and it is a good project where you have to make somthing efficiant, efficiancy is somthing we don't see alot of nowdays.
So, why hasn't somthing like this been intergrated into a car like the Prius? The Prius needs a sunroof anyways, and it would make it much more efficiant because it could harnest alot more electricity.
How could this possibly be used maliciously? It could be used to people's advantage. Say you get a plastic card with a unique identifier, and it tracks what you buy and such. You swipe that card, and it will know what you bought last time, and could offer discounts to things you buy often. As long as you aren't buying clorox, ammonia, and loads of sugar everyday, you should be fine. As long as they don't take your address and sell it to vendors and such to know what you like, it should be fine, so long as they don't store you address and such with your unique ID. Heck, maybe they will even make a system that uses cash like a vending machine, and give you "credit" on your store card, and you can always put more money on it if you don't want to use a check/credit card. It is good to wait for the system rather than to bash it before it comes. If things get bad about information being stolen, maybe a law will come into play, but lets not try and cross the privacy bridge until it comes.
I totally agree, I cannot wait for the day that dead-end fast food and checkout jobs are put away and replaced with technology, so people will be forced into real jobs that require skill. People used todo things because they liked todo them, and loved what they do, but now it is all checkout and flip burgers so you can save up for insurance, a new "system", some chrome rims, and an annoying exhaust. I cannot wait for the day that all people of stupidity will no longer have these dead-end jobs to throw away money into trash. Prices will be lower, and the economy will be better.

That must be depressing and all, it is to me when a company dies .... so who gets all the equiptment? :D

Maybe, Apple does read slashdot, their first preview of safari was a video of them browing slashdot. Tom Hertzfeldt is my hero too

I think we broke the counter, it just says, "Thanks for looking!" now. Great job!

I bought a G4 desktop 5 days before the G5 was released
:)
What were you thinking?! But the $700 seems like it makes up for it

That is what sturdy well-built equiptment, security camera, and law enforcement is for I suppose.
