    This is actually a good suggestion, although I would go with an 8 pass wipe

    1 wipe with 1s
    2 wipe with 0s
    3 wipe with random pattern
    4 wipe with 10 pattern
    5 wipe with 01 pattern
    6 change file system (include at least ext3 reiser ntfs fat)
    7 download random stuff from alt.binaries heirarchy
    8 repeat depending on original sensitivity.

    If you make it worthwhile(through price caps, subsidies, or welfare) to not work or produce, people will not be productive. A "free" market makes it so that those who wish to eat must be productive.

    Should we give a "leg up" to people in a hole, sure! Should it have strings, Absolutely! IF after a reasonable time period the person, business or industry continues to nurse at the government teat, however it is time to cut them off.

    In many parts of the country, it is more immediately financially rewarding to have an illegitimate child every 38 months than it is to go to college and get a job. So there is a large sector of society that does just that.

    Ok, went back to the article and I read too fast. They listed price per sq meter in linden and per acre in dollars and I just saw 10 linden and 100 us and assumed it was a straight conversion.

    According to this article $100US=$10Linden which appears to indicate that its really hard to make money in this game. KInda scary really when the fake money is worth more than the real thing.

    And in the context it is. A player that supports more formats is better than a player that supports few. A DIVX(Circuit city) player is better than a plain jane DVD player because it supports DIVX encrypted DVDs. likewise a multizone player is better than a changeable zone is better than a fixed zone player. And a DVD player that has upgradeable firmware and supports MPEG4 is best of all.

    And, how can on-the-fly defrag be a caching. As in windows where you go run defrag every now and then, in OS X it is done on the fly as you are operating

    IME on a 1ghz machine w/ no hardware changes the speed breakdown is thus from fastest to slowest

    Note that XP was tested after stripping it down to look and behave as much like 2k as possible. And these are times to "login screen" not to desktop. Time to desktop differences were not humanly perceptable.

    There are quite a few games that have signifigant replayability. I trot out Centurion, M1 Abrams battle tank, and blackthorne frequently to run a few missions. I've also got on my list the Forgotten realms gold box AD&D stuff silver queen, hillsfar, pool of radiance, etc.

    If you aren't the kook you appear to be,

    and You truly want to gain this knowledge, and you are of average intelligence as measured on Slashdot, Then apply for government work in an area that will place you in direct contact with the knowledge you wish to gain.

    Just remember that just because its a secret doesn't make it interesting. for example, my credit cards and banking information are closely guarded secrets, but they aren't interesting to the average person walking down the street.

    do you really think the government's secrets are that much more exciting than yours??

    Authorized means just that, the 19 year old cop with the automatic rifle has the training to use his discretion whether he should shoot you or call someone to escort you back to the main path.

    IOW they aren't going to shoot the 15 year old kid who wandered over from the nearby campsite, they will have him taken "home". OTOH, the guy with the video camera may just disappear and his bleached bones will never be explained.

    being searched,stopped or apprehended by any of the various services MPs is not pleasant, but unless you have obvious bad intentions, or resist you aren't LIKELY to end up getting deaded.

    The government will sponsor my loans for education Or I can trade 4 years of my life for college funding.

    Many of these countries with such High tax rates also have universal conscription.... An idea abhorent to most Americans.

    About the same as a mag lite... in fact, in any given scenario you are better off with a maglite because Hey, you are a geek, and a maglite is typical geek carry.

    My wife has a maglite I gave her she carries everywhere. She understands the basics of how to use it. Remember, there are no Dangerous weapons, only dangerous men.

    Have you ever seen a street thug use a knife? If you are wearing any sort of protection, leather jacket, heavy denim, etc, and paying the least bit of attention you can either move inside his center of motion, or just wait for his overhead swing to go wide and take the stupid thing. Yes, getting cut hurts, but it beats getting dead.

    And how are you going to legislate away my inate right to make and use weapons?? Just looking around my desk area, I count a dozen different weapons... several pens, a mouse. a 3 hole punch, my phone, my dictionary, power cables, etc. given some time I could likely rig together something from what I have here that could propel a deadly particle... ie a gun.

    I know you are a troll, but I'm going to respond anyway.

    No there is NO need to shoot your children, but pain is an effective motivator, would I firmly slap a 3 year old to stop him from getting 3rd degree burns, YES. would I let a 5 year old learn experientially that the stove really is HOT, Quite probably.Why the difference, Well a 3 year old doesn't have the same level of understanding of NO and HOT as a 5 year old and therefore should be protected from the HOT.

    Would I use more extreme(not abusive) levels of pain to keep my child from running across a busy street, YES. Would I talk about it first, Of course. Would we have a long talk afterwards about how I love him and don't want him dead from the big scary cars, Of course. But at some point MOST people don't learn unless it hurts.

    Some learn from talking, some learn from other people, some have to stub their own toe and burn their own fingers.

    Point I was trying for is that a pinch(1/2 tsp) of salt at the beginning adds more flavour nuance than 1 tbsp at the end.

    Because it has melded and merged...

    Salt is an ingredient, pepper is a seasoning.. thyme is either or both depending on the recipe.
