Did anyone really expect JAVA to be released as GPL v3? A license that hasn't even been written yet? Or wait until GPL v3 is released (is there a set date for that?)?
Does this mean I can use 2 mice independently on my system? Cool!

I think that a lot of open source projects avoid going to 1.0 because they lose the whole "it's a beta, it's supposed to have problems" crutch. The fact of the matter is, people in general understand that all applications, regardless of version number, have flaws.
When you call it 1.0, there is no going back. It's kind of scary for some projects. Look at the difference in press in a project like firefox. When it hit 1.0 it started getting flack for a poor upgrade mechanism and such, while before that no one cared much if it only came in.zip files.
Actually, I do keep the par2 files on the same disk. I figure that if I have a failure, it's going to be a read error from a random sector. So long as I can read the vast majority of the files (say, 70%), I'm fine.
Of course, if a disk gets a read error in the sector holding the FAT, I'm toast.:-)
I create par2 files of all the videos and other large files I burn to DVD. It takes a while, but I know that I can have a 30% failure rate and still generate all my data.
Maybe someone could create special hardware to make par2 take a reasonable amount of time?
No one said this is an answer to the country's energy needs. There is no answer. There are, however, multiple partial solutions. A percentage of cars that can run on veggie oils. More effecient and cheap-to-make solar panels. Tidal force power plants. If each of them can take a tiny sliver of the energy burden of the country, it adds up over time to a noticeable difference.
Yeah. I could just imagine having to solve quadratic equations or such. It would certainly be an interesting study to see what happens the the number and quality of posts.
Proprietary solutions that are dynamic worry the hell out of me. And I just administer my own home computer and a couple for my family.
Imagine a document that someone writes that cannot be imported because the new word processor has a new improved document standard. I've been bit by some heavily formated text documents on Word 95 that Word 2000 doesn't get right.
OpenDoc may not be the answer (or maybe it is), but at least it's a well documented start.
Reminds me of the old saying "We either hang together or hang alone", or "United we stand, divided we fall". Yes, I signed the petition using my real name. I hope it makes a difference.
I wouldn't call it ineptitude. All of medicine goes by the doctrine: "If you here hoofs, look for horses, not zebras." As you said, this is a fairly unusual form of poisoning. I'm surprised it was even diagnosed properly (assuming that it was, of course). IANAT (I am not a toxicologist), but the effects of a poison are typically not known until someone succumbs to it. While others have been poisoned by this particular element, it couldn't have been that many people compared to all the other possible toxins available.
Actually ours was a 4-way linked list to keep the list sorted by two different keys, with pointers to the next and previous element.
Unfortunately I cannot pull out the code (lost it a couple years ago), but it was part of an assignment to keep sorting times down in lists when sorted by multiple keys. Inserting a new item way O(n), but sorting by one of the pre-defined keys was then zero time.
Do you have to be an athiest to search for proof? What about all the agnostics on/.? I would gander to bet they outnumber the athiests, devout christians, budhists, and Hindus on/..
A good poll: I believe in: The Budha Krishna Yahweh Ra! Ra! Ra! Cowboy Neal The almighty dollar.
Office 2000 is actually quite good. Thankfully I have a couple (legal) copies of it. The transition from Office 2000 to openoffice.org is not too harsh as well (except powerpoint with video animations, unfortunately).
This is the sort of thing that many users would love to get when the pricepoint is right. Both for easy of use (wouldn't you love a keyboard that could change languages at a single click?) and for increased productivity (that photoshop overlay looked pretty slick).
$400 is over my budget. When it hits $100 it's mine.:-)
I'm pretty sure anyone can sell proprietary code for linux with no problems. Many companies do it already, including Oracle. The problem is if you want your code to be part of the kernel.
I know that. Just about everyone here knows that. The top guys at Microsoft know that. Why doesn't Dvorak?
P.S. Don't click the link to his article. You'll just encourage him to write more drivel.
I agree completely. Pakistan is not India's enemy. China is India's #1 threat. Pakistan is relatively inconsequential and misdirected (and not getting much better, if mainstream media is getting the story right).

Anyone know if it's possible to embed a video in a presentation yet?

How are content creators supposed to support themselves? I mean writers, actors, singers.
I know the current system is useless, but how do we replace it and still have content be worth something so that creators can make a living?

Well, I guess it's better than Microsoft creating the Playstation 4.
(What the heck is the article title supposed to mean? I we supposed to believe that Sony would never create another system and call it a Playstation?)
I am a touch surprised that it beat out sandisk, since sandisk sells more at amazon.

So poverty is now equated to intelligence?

I think that Redhat should offered subscription based indemnification to all MSWindows clients. Just to muddy the waters, of course. :-)
Undeniable proof that /. has jumped the shark.

And good for Dell for taking care of him with a minimum of fuss.
