If the software can handle it, run the entire mess in a virtual environment, in a secure OS. Have the hosting OS take care of opening only the ports necessary for the software to run.
142 articles out of 12,000 is certainly a problem, but actually not much of one. I'm sure it he made his script public (I have no idea if he did so. In the/. tradition, I did not RTFArticle) and the wikipedia were to use it, it would be of benefit. Not to automatically tag articles as plagiarism, but at least tag them for further evaluation by an editor.
Buy, hey, 142/12000 is less than 2%. I would have thought the percentage would have been at least 5%.
My dad bought his first Mac about a year ago. Before that I was doing support visits on a monthly basis for a number of years; and that was with him only using the computer a couple times a week to read the news. Since then, he doesn't even invite me over, and my mom complains that he's always on the computer doing stuff. He has bought himself an ipod and ripping his CDs and scanning in the cover art himself.
I haven't been there to see it in almost 6 months. Maybe I should have left him with windows.
The uninstaller should prevent another installation of the software? Just playing devil's advocate here, but that's a much higher standard you are setting them up against than just about any other software.
For one thing, what if this was Firefox. Should the uninstaller set up up so that if you uninstall Firefox once, it should never be installed on the computer again?
Then again, how should the uninstaller do that without leaving bits in the registry or a program directory? And wouldn't you want an uninstaller to clean out it's directory and leave the registry in a clean state?
Yeah, but not all problems are with upgrading. I did a clean install, including removing all the.config files in ~/. I still could not reboot the computer without it hanging just before the reboot. Interestingly enough, I could shutdown fine (most of the time).
I'm going to try another clean install next weekend and not use automatix then (Maybe I made a mistake about using automatix this time -- I needed a fairly fully functioning system fast, and Ubuntu leaves a lot of nice stuff out of the default installation.). If things aren't stable after that, it's back to 6.06.x until 7.04 comes out.:-(
Just to be on the safe side, bring along discs for both 6.06.1 and 6.10. Some systems are less stable on 6.10 (problems hanging while trying to reboot on mine).
Same here. I've had much less chances at modding (though I have probably reading more) since the new system went up. On the plus side, I finally figured out how to use those arrows to get the right mix of comments while keeping out most of the trolls.
If ipod owners are not loyal, why haven't there been any mass defections to any of the previous ipod killers?
Because apple created the right mix of usability, fashion, and ergonomics. Now that ipods are considered stylish, any competitor has to overcome that as well to eat into apple's market share. The fact of the matter is, the market is growing, and apple's share is probably growing as well.
And I am sure that when Leopard comes out, it will be as an upgrade only to a previous installation of OS X, not as a full OEM installation onto a blank drive. Or, at the very least, will require in the EULA that it is running on Apple-blessed hardware.
In order to take Redhat's product and resell it, they have to keep Redhat as a viable business. If Redhat folds, it'll push a lot of expense onto Oracle. I wouldn't be surprised if Oracle starts pumping money into Redhat as a business expense/investment.
Not only did I love the hardware, but also the names. an "Indigo machine" is a great name for a machine, and the machine really looked great, too. Years ahead of the big shops offering good looking machines (Except Apple, of course).
If you are that essential to a business that you need your email while on vacation, you can afford a mobile phone and have a secretary read you the highlights. If you need network access for work while on a trip, you should have the work get you a laptop. They're cheap enough.
I wonder how high those listening levels are compared to other consumer audio listening devices? Are they that much higher than the levels from Sony Walkmen or other mp3 players?
Working as a physician in a coal miner town, I see a lot of people with lung cancer. Both those that worked in the mines and their family members. Yes, I suppose they could have worked somewhere else, but *someone* had to get that coal up 30 years ago, and it sure as hell wasn't some independently acting robots.

The business card things was stupid, but what was cool was beaming a whole bunch of addresses to someone else. I've done it a number of times when someone joined our team and needed everyone's contact info.
It would be really cool if the Zune allows me to beam an entire playlist to someone else. Of course, it would not be cool if the receiver could only play them a couple times and if the beaming took more than 15 seconds.
I guess they wont be playing much music on all those channels.

Okay. WHY should I "check out" this game verses any other game? Is there something in it that attracts the geek crowd? Is there anything that differentiates it from the many other games that come out ever week?

Why the sudden stinginess with giving out mod points?
(And, no, I'm not expecting an informative response to this... but it would be nice.

I always found this biography on Hitler less dull than the one from wikipedia:
