"It was terribly frustrating," he said. "I followed the rules. I was convinced that was the right way to go. Now I'm convinced we're going to have our day in court and win."
Wow! You know what's even more frustrating? Actually going ahead with an idea, succeeding, then having a parasite attach himself to you. This guy should be shot. And pissed on.
'Wherefore' means 'why'. "Why art thou, Hypercard?"
I suggested the title of this article, and know full well what "wherefore" means. (I have a dusty old English degree.) Furthermore, I think that paraphrasing Juliet is entirely appropriate. I suspect that the relationship between Mac OS X and HyperCard is doomed, as was Romeo and Juliet's love.
Perhaps the worst grammatical mistake in slashdot history.
That's perhaps the most misdirected outrage in slashdot history!
That's one of the coolest machines I've seen in a while. The videos show two gaits:
Going down the hill, it moves one leg at a time -- walking. On flat land, it moves three legs at a time, always keeping a tripod on the ground -- trotting. I wonder if it has any other gaits? Galloping would be something to see...
Well, it's a new definition for "dark ages", that's for sure. I was under the impression that the defining characteristics of the dark ages was ignorance, suppression, warfare, famine, strife -- you know, BAD STUFF.
Actually, the period we call the "Dark Ages" is a period for which we have few written records. It's only 'dark' because we can't 'see' what was happening back then.
So police react to the protesters. If the protesters would just protest, all fine and well. That is nessessary in our society.
But violence? Civil disobediance (a phrase for "break the law")?. The people that do this are just using the summit as an excuse for violent behaviour.
Exactly! No one here in Canada wants to stop peaceful protests, sit-ins, demonstrations, strikes, etc. But when busloads of men in black balaclavas, pockets stuffed full of rocks, start showing up -- that's a different story entirely.
You know what would be ironic? If a good size asteroid hit the Earth, enough to kill millions of people but not billions, say, and that explosion mistakenly triggered a Russian nuclear attack on the U.S., and then the U.S. responded, and all the combined nuclear weapons and asteroid damage wiped everything out. In addition to being ironic, it would suck.
USB didn't come from Apple OR Microsoft. My point wasn't one about a horse race between those two entities. I'm just tired of people claiming it's yet another 'Apple Innovation.'
No iMacs weren't the first computer to ship with USB ports. They were, however, the first computer to ship WITHOUT serial ports or parallel ports or any other ports to hook up keyboards, mice and printers. Apple forced adoption of the USB standard. No PC company has balls that big, and that's what really irks people about Apple.
Steve Jobs is the Fonz, and Bill Gates is Richie Cunningham.
I agree, but had trouble pinpointing exactly why the new Star Wars movies weren't as good as their predecessors.
There is a brilliant article
here that does explain exactly why. The gist of the article is that the two new Star Wars movies are missing any sort of Han Solo character. There is no 'cool' guy to offset all the earnest Jedi assholes -- who are basically divinity students -- and just a little more exciting. It's like Beverly Hills Cop without Eddy Murphy.
There is a very insightful point in the article describing how the re-mastered Star Wars has Greedo shoot Han Solo first, making it look like Han Solo acted in self-defence, and effectively 'nicing' up his character. In the original, he shoots first. In the new movies, only robots get shot.
Well, there's also the fact that opening weekend for Spiderman saw the movie playing on hundreds of screens thousands of times a day here... One 12 screen theatre had ONLY Spiderman, all day from 10:00am.
Actually, that's not a fact. This is a fact: Spiderman opened on around 1600 screens in North America, while Clones opened on around 1500 screens. That's not enough of a difference to explain away the revenues.
Yes, the sun will come up tommorow. It rose and set perfectly on schedule over the killing fields of cambodia and the repressed millions in the old soviet block, and it will rise and set right on schedule over the western world, whether that world enjoys the freedoms of the past, or a future of authoritarian rule grounded in the enforcement of "intellectual property" in a society whose technology has long since made that notion incompatible with individual freedom.
I purchased one of Apple's iBooks last year and was totally dazzled by the display, OSX's performance. I opened a shell and was turned off enough to pack the thing into its box and take it back (eating the 10% restocking fee).
So, one of the early versions of Mac OS X running on Apple's most modest laptop, circa 1 year ago, didn't have the performance you were looking for. Point taken! I am going to follow your advice, and will not duplicate the situation you found yourself in a year ago.
Well, hate to say it, but polish, ease of use, help systems: anything that could make OSS usable by any but the most freakish, repressed, zealous, skinny Linux geek.
I think you have just revealed the beauty of Mac OS X. Apple deserves tons of credit for selling consumer products that boot into Unix on default.

Exactly!
I'm glad that someone is paying attention.
Saint Fnordius . . . pray for us.

Here's Microsoft's version of Apple's ad:
Rip. Mix. Burn. Spend half a day jumping through Microsoft-induced hoops that are forced on you by your own computer.

He must run Linux the way Toonces the Cat drives a car...not very well.
Yes, I know the answer is 'Terrorists hate Americans', but why? If we are doing something to piss them off then stop it.
Well, for one thing, our women have way too many rights and freedoms to suit them. Should we get the burkas out?
Mmmmmmmmmm...appeasement.
On a related note, the master tapes for the Hilarious House of Frightenstein have been destroyed.
Well, it's a new definition for "dark ages", that's for sure.

Oh no! First Apple, and now Linux! What will we do?
Assuming that Linux's death is as premature as Apple's, I'd say that there are many many years of using Linux ahead of us.
So police react to the protesters. If the protesters would just protest, all fine and well. That is nessessary in our society. But violence? Civil disobediance (a phrase for "break the law")?. The people that do this are just using the summit as an excuse for violent behaviour.

But she hasn't killed upwards of 100 million people. Let's give credit where credit is due.

If, by 'funny', you mean 'Marxist', then I agree. That is a Marxist notion of profit.
You guys are old chums? What a freaky coincidence running into each other here!
Spiderman was just a better movie

Amen to that! You rock, FreeUser!

Aren't we on Internet-time yet?
Someone--Ezra Pound, maybe--said that the purpose of Christianity is to make good Roman citizens.
Nietsche said that there was only one Christian, and He died on the cross.

Were you in an Apple Store? Did they get out the LSD iMac and show you a thing or two?
Mmmmmmmm...LSD iMac.
I have the utmost respect for any and all belief systems...
Really? I don't. There are a lot of idiots in the world. We are not obliged to respect them all.
