If the company was set up 10 years ago, shouldn't Jason own something of it? Did they just hand his share over to Rob (pretty nice deal for Rob if that's the case)?

  13. Re:Can they record? on Students Get iPods as Study Aids · · Score: 1

I don't think it really matters. I use ephod to transfer files to and from the iPod and that program dumps every mp3 into one of the 20 /Music dirs. I think there's a setting that tells it to do that or to spread them out but I might be wrong. It takes genre/artist/album/song info from the mp3 tags, not the structure. I guess it just matters in the way it normally matters if you want 2000 files in one dir or 100 in 20 dirs.

At least the LOTR people are upfront with it and tell everyone there will be a special one later. They did this with the first one as well, in case someone doesn't know. They were nice enough not to piss people off by first releasing the normal one and then announce the special one two months later when the fans had already bought the first one. I guess when you have a movie that'll make one "billion" dollars either way, you can afford to be nice (but it still isn't the norm in movieland so props to them for that).

At first glance some things don't make sense. It says the reasons 'music executives' like it is because it makes 'downloading music as simple and nontechnical as buying a book from Amazon.com'. Since when has that been more important to 'music executives' than content control?

And a Mac+iPod only service being "exactly what the music industry has been waiting for" and "the answer" if "people on the Internet are actually interested in buying music, not just stealing it"? Most of those people currently just interested in 'stealing' would probably have to buy one or both of those before they could use the service.

I got a Pod back when they were pretty new, then I got a Flextone II amp. Many months of tweak, tweak, tweak those settings to bring the sound up from good to ok ensued. Eventually I came to the conclusion that I don't need a hundred different settings from 30 amps. I need one good clean, one good crunch + stomp on the tubescreamer for lead, and now I have good, old fashioned Vox AC 30 instead. One great sounding amp makes me happier than 30 ok sounding models.

That may be just me though, tone is such a subjective thing. I'm not an analog snob though and I'm still following developments in modelling. Still have my Pod also, it's better for living room playing than the AC 30 (LOUD), and it is great for home recording (where you can do all sorts of tricks to the tracks to make it sound 'more real', and where the need for loads of different sounds is probably bigger than when playing loud with others)

With what they're talking about, sounds like you'd only have one cable going from guitar to amp. Wouldn't need your effects pedals anymore, it'd either be in the guitar or amp digitally. If that's the case, your fudge factor is minimal.
I think the day when the majority of guitar players would be ok with someone telling them they don't need their effects pedals anymore because they're in the guitar is pretty far away. That would be like 'not needing' to put together computers from different components we like and know work well, but instead all use Dell machines with Windows XP (even if some might say xp isn't minimal fudge factor).

There already are 'all in one' digital solutions for those who want that, and amps with digital amp models and effects in one amp. But different effects pedals do different things, different pedals that provide the same effects sound different. Putting them together in a setup that works well is half the fun (or pain, depending on who you ask). I have both a rackmount multieffects unit and a bunch of stomp pedals. Which I use (often both together) depends on the situation. The rack unit is more convenient, but a board with effects pedals is a lot cooler (much like a homebuilt computer is cooler than a Dell).
