There have still been larger and more devastating hurricanes on record long before "global warming" was a concern, so your comment has been deemed irrelevant...
I was still using one of those in 1995 to interface with our card readers that controled the doors (it held the user access database). It was the only thing that was reliable enough that we could leave under our raised floor in our computer room and with it's batteries, it could run for almost a day without external power. Very handy when the building lost power yet again and someone needed to get into the room (no, we weren't issued keys).
Most important feature of the PC - filters for the intake fans. Keeping the dust and grime out will go along way making a PC in the shop or garage last a long time...
It is getting better, however. in terms of performance and tools to utilize freenet.
I dabble on freenet sometimes and when I connect up, I get fair performance. Big files still suck, but little file and web browsing can be tolerable...
Of course, nothing is to stop someone from renting the DVD, playing it on their High-Def LCD or Plasma screen, then recording it with a digital Camcorder pointed at that screen (in high-def if it supports it). Results in much better quality than movie theater rip, and of course, no DRM...
I think you nailed the point. Many people assume their jobs will be the same throughout their careers and are caught surprised when they find out their skills are obsolete.

Raw DV isn't compressed. 12-13G/hour is about right as DV is 3.6Mb/sec.
Everything catches up with you sooner or later...

There needs to be some sort of universal indemnity protection. Maybe something like whistleblower protection...

Freenet works better these days, however it still can be quite slow at times. You might want to give it a try again.
