That may be true for the first elevator, but once they have the first one built, they will use it to carry up the supplies for the 2nd, 3rd, etc. For the first several years a large percentage of the time on the elevator will be used to created more elevators.
Once many elevators are created, that will decrease the cost.
Don't forget to check out Sun Freeware to save some time trying to compile stuff on Solaris. The Sun guys love to compile things using the Sun cc compiler, which they don't include in the normal distro. Good luck adding in new perl modules that aren't native perl to the perl that comes with Solaris.

I usually get about 2 - 2 1/2 hrs on the battery doing normal work and using the wireless internet 802.11g access.
Emachines has a cool laptop as well. Currently it is only available to buy at Best Buy stores. I have one and love it. Widescreen 15.4" and it works great.
I just purchased a laptop at Best Buy and had a different bad experience.
When checking out, the guy asked me if I wanted some free software. I said OK, and he proceeded to add MSN internet, Netflix and Rhaposody to my order. The worst part of this was, he activated all three of these with my credit card. I never asked him to activate these, but since he had my credit card to charge for the laptop, he just did it.
Now, these all had a 14 day or longer trial that was "free", but if I didn't call and cancel each one, I would have had my card charged.
Live and learn, don't let them push the free software on you.

How long before this kind of thing also results in a lawsuit?
I didn't realize that you could sue to get your hands on classified documents under the freedom of information act.
Things are classified for a reason.
It depends on what kind of data you're talking about. I shoot photos with a Canon EOS 10D. I shoot sports and weekly generate gigabytes of data. Can you imagine the cost of a hosting service that would allow that kind of storage.
Then there is the problem of uploading. It takes much less time to burn a cd than it does to upload a CD's worth of data, even on a DSL or Cable Modem connection.
I thought the RIAA was going after those that had songs available for download, not those that did the downloading???
Are they saying that she had tons of songs for download on Kazaa or what?
The real question is, once installed, will they charge for access?
Maybe next time I'll not bother to look up the link. ;-)

I still think the Space Elevator will be the ticket for inexpensive space launches.
Not Day/Month/Year.
You must be from France.
At the very least, they could outsource the playing with Legos to India!
We need to tell the martians to stay away from the Toxic Witch's Brew!!
And a cheap knock off of the IBM/Hitachi drive at that.
2 GB Solid State cards go for close to $500!
Soon outdoor lighting conditions will be about the same as indoor, and f/2.8 lenses won't have a wide enough apeture.
I guess the lens makers don't mind this news, though. Too bad Canon discontinued their 200mm f/1.8 lens, it will be needed by everyone soon!

The Space Elevator - http://highliftsystems.com - is what we should be spending money on.

It would be too expensive until the Space Elevator is constructed. After that, all kinds of mining and other things will occur.
I can see it now, Mom and Pop stores could have messages sent to your device as you walk past or near their entrance
The odds that anyone can put up a geocities website and make up odds: 1 in 4.

Beaming enough power to fly a plane is one thing. Beaming enough to power an entire city is something else.
This is the technology they want to use to power the space elevator.

So, your idea isn't the best for all cases.

Yeah, and they are also thinking of using this as fuel for cars. What's worse? Storing it at your house, or driving around with it?
You came in that? You're braver than I thought...
