There are basic phones still available, other brands such as Alcatel and Sagem do less advanced phones.
Anyway, the main problem with Nokia IMHO is design. Many phones in their current range are simply hideous too look at and the form factor is more or less the same.
Sony Ericsson for example are producing much more attractive and "cool" phones. To some people the phone you are seen with says something about you, just like wearing a flashy watch. Some people are happy wearing a digital watch, others want something more stylish.
For the XBox 2 Microsoft seem to have taken the Gamecube as their inspiration. In effect it will be like Gamecube technology but at current CPU speeds.
They're behind then times when Sony are going to be using new technology. Once again though Sony have created a system that is a pain in the butt to program, ease of development will be the XBox2's advantage.
Linspire is built on a Debian foundation, it can be altered to use APT and then upgraded for free.
So it's not a bad choice, plus the OS will be tailored to the hardware and setup nicely. So no complaints about hardware not working and Linux being hard to install etc..
Microsoft are just annoyed that they can't provide all the perks they used to, they're having to slash $1BN off their running costs and benefits package. This is money that customers have paid without need just to keep the greed machine at Microsoft running.
They wanted illegal downloads to go away. I don't the industry wants to kill off downloads in general. It actually saves them money since it's on demand sales, they don't have to try and guess how many copies to produce and have stocks sitting around on shelves.
What they really wanted though was to invent all the technology themselves and release it with a big "wow", trouble is others got there first and it looks like they are just jumping on the bandwagon.
They're using private, public key encryption. While this isn't impossible to crack can you imagine how long it will take to decode the data on a DVD? The film will be available to buy by the time you manage to crack it.
Given that many companies selling appliances make a good part of their margins on the hardware I can't see how they're going to give that away. Software development is a much trickier process than hardware at times due to the sheer scale of codebases these days.

Indeed, all of the weaknesses of Windows on the desktop (registry nightmares, reboots) but with non of the advantages (GUI behaviour is different, different CPU platforms, fixed screen sizes etc..). I only own one since there's less software for the other platforms.
I'd love Mozilla for PocketPC. PIE is a bit dumb and basic.
The previous rises in price were due to the potential earning power of 'taxing' large organisations deploying Linux. Since that's unlikely to happen and their case is looking weaker it is no wonder their shares are falling.
It's not like they sell anything to make a profit.
Although I own a Pocket PC and like the range of available software, the Palm OS has always been less hassle. Windows Mobile has many of the weaknesses of Windows on the desktop.
I think the solution in the real world is to have many different computers with different OSes. Have a Mac, Windows PC, Linux PC, Sun box etc.., that way there's always something that will be unaffected.
Well I missed that one, but given their current track record (they use RM/RA and WMA/WMV), I do wonder if they'll use their own codec. The BBC needs to raise more money than is provided by the TV license and so they're always looking for funding. Suppose Microsoft or Real provide them with money to persuade them to use their codec, would they turn that down?
Is it no wonder that the GIMP is still catching up? It's only on about version 2, previous to that it was version 1.2. So go back to Photoshop 1 or 2 and compare that to the GIMP. I think they've done a lot of good work in such a short time. Cinepaint which is based on GIMP has been used in many Hollywood films, basically because they can alter it to suit their needs, no need to ask Adobe for features.
What reputation? this is a spammer, they're reputation is dirt. Their mailing aren't even at the quality of mail order marketing, they email trashy adverts for utter garbage like penis enlargement scams.
It's important to keep it on the road

Don't want the rich healthy successful people taking themselves out of the gene pool. But of course it would be good if they have a special cut down safety system if the owner is a lawyer:)
Lets not forget that at the moment it might be less functional, but you will be able to upgrade for free. The more people use and contribute to Open Office the better it becomes.

Has been a long running saga, they paid a dividend a few years back, first one ever.
Anyway, you don't typically buy shares for the dividend. Always make more money buying shares that will increase in value.

I've heard worse news before.

59 UK pounds for a dual layer writer is expensive?
It's only about 2x the price of a CD writer for about 9 times the storage capacity.
Even if you manage to get a player that would only then give you access to one of the encyption keys. Each member will he using their own code.

In some ways it is for the best. It hold back the progression of a TV series if all you do is recreate yet another encounter with the Daleks.
Perhaps something along the lines of the Borg could be used. The cybermen but a lot more evil. I'm sure someone must have some good ideas.
Exactly what I was wondering. It's a very compact format (few KB per file) and I love some of the old tunes :)
This is bad publicity for Microsoft and will do nothing to increase their image and profitability in less well off countries.
Well yes and no. It costs ISPs and businesses loads to deal with compromised PCs.
Ultimately you will probably receive more spam due to this decision.
The best thing they could have done is neuter the network connectivity when applying SP2 if the OS is pirated.

They'll go and use RealMedia or WMV and still be at the mercy of some other company.
I doubt they'll use XVID or other open standards. Would be fairly neutral if they released MPEG-2 files, however these would be gigantic.
Must be about 15 years?

I guess getting OEMs to pre-install Office and not other products can only have helped Microsoft.
